The recent updates aren't quality and especially lack quantity. The mace has a gimmick that stands out but it also begs the question; why did it take them so long to add something like this? The fact that it has that gimmick attached to it shows that they're aware that modded MC hamstrung their creativity.

But they are NOT ALLOWED to. Microsoft decides everything in the end. Its not financially wise to create a GOOD game with CONSTANT UPDATES. Microsoft bought minecraft to be a cash cow, not a good game. Drip feeding the playerbase is the most consistent way to make money for games, making good games is actually BAD for business.
Please understand. Mojang certainly has decent coders, and they can cobble together something janky but fun in a matter of months. They could be updating the game every month if they wanted to, but becoming a big company has forced every decision to go through several layers of approval before it is allowed to be worked on. Devs used to be able to try whatever they wanted and if the rest of the team liked it, it was added in. Things are so strict now that being acught coding something extra will get your ass fired. This ties into the drip-feed model, microsoft WANTS mojang to run this way.

For some reason ever since microsoft bought out mojang, Minecraft has been marketed as a game for literal toddlers. They can't put anything "scary" or "bad" that purely hurts you. It has to foster creativity and learning and all that lovey dovey shit. The game looked like it was going a direction where you'd have mobs that were just too strong to deal with that you just had to stay away from, or use spells and potions that do a lot of things and were useful, like a blocky version of diablo. Then notch sold the game.
