I played through Max Payne 1 and 2 recently and it surprised me how good the writing is. On the surface it seems like a goofy noir story but they drop a lot of subtle and not subtle hints that Max is actually fricking crazy and that there's this huge underlying psychological thriller and grand conspiracy subplot. Max's interpretation of the of games is probably flawed or completely deranged. The most obvious standout thing are the TV shows which very clearly describe Max's life. The fact that Sam Lake plays most of the TV show characters is funny but it also hints towards this idea of the TV shows being twisted versions of Max's memories. In the second game there are numerous hallucination scenes that call Max a schizophrenic and also suggest that he spent some time at a mental hospital before the games happened. This is confirmed later by the Alan Wake novels about Alex Casey. It's also heavily suggested that Max and Mona are the same person (MonA SaX in the second MP2 hospital scene) and that Max Payne killed his wife (Max's wife apologizing to Max before she dies). These games have a lot going on, and it seems like mr lake thought about this shit quite a bit, and it's impressive to me that most people who have played MP1 and 2 probably haven't even picked up on this stuff
