I'd played WoW private servers like a decade ago before getting into other MMOs on and off, only recently I tried WoW again and found a new appreciation for just how snappy the combat is, everything is rolling out when it should, not xiv's sluggish shite

this makes dark souls netcode look like an engineering feat

Frick, yeah nailed it. This is why most games are so hard for me to get into now after being a raider in WoW for over a decade. I also got so into making the most functional and cool UIs that I could, so now I have customization autism. I got so into transmog that if I got a new piece and couldn't mog it, I played just a tiny bit worse. This game ruined me. I'm a goddamn princess. A mean girl.

20 years and not a single MMO has the responsiveness of WoW. That's why it'll never die.

this. all these wow ripoffs never failed to understand that the biggest reason wow is successful is because IT FEELS GOOD TO PLAY. the movement is incredibly smooth, using abilities is responsive and the ui is clean and easy to view at a glance. all these wow ripoffs have never understood this.

the mmo genre needs to be given up on completely. the modern day troony epidemic has completely ruined them. you can't play mmo's and avoid them anymore, period. and if you engage in the community at all you are guaranteed to have to interact with them and likely become a part of their drama, and if you naysay their mental illness they will have you cancelled and likely banned.
mmo are just not worth it anymore man.

The only part of this that's true is to not play MMOs. The reason predates whatever that poster is talking about by decades. Widespread social media usage turned MMOs from (one of the only) places to hang out online to a place to hung achievements & maximize to show your friends on social media. Playing MMOs pre-Facebook was a totally different experience.

Hi guys, I've been radicalized by screenshots on here. Phantasy Star Online has seduced, and captivated my kink for y2k SOVL aesthetics, and I was wondering if there's any reasonable way to play the game these days? Do you even need to be on a server with population or? Cause I see speedrunners have running this game too.

I've gotten LGBTQ+ mental illness advertisers banned in-game.
You just have to know how to word things properly. If they put 18+ in their advert that is a reportable offence as this game is rated T for Teen.

As an XIV troony I can tell you that the classes peak in PvP, it's the only place any form of class identity exists but stuff like gunbreaker FFVIII junctioning enemy players to tweak their own moveset, kino. It's also still FFXIV so it feels like you're engaging through a bag of borrowed dicks so it's a hard sell

You can play the game just for PvP if you want and reach max level of PvP. There's PvP meta all the way from max level 200 to 50. PvP makes money and it grants good experience. People literally exp tax themselves using the guild system to stay in their favorite PvP brackets. PvPing can be lucrative.

    >XIV
having played this trash for 3 years I can honestly say don't bother. it is THE troony factory game. if you do decide to play it, it's only good as a singleplayer story game, it just happens to have other people who you don't really interact with or ever need to, god forbid that you actually do because it has the most sensitive, uppity troony playerbase that will scream YOU DONT PAY MY SUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! at the slightest criticism of their gameplay.
It always baffles me how bad people are at it when it's literally simon says and the GCD is so slow and classes basically all play the same and play themselves, but the braindead community finds a way. When your game is the most popular and people join it simply because it's the game with the most people, you get a lot of non-gamer types who are just there for the social experience and don't care about playing a game at all(trannies)
Endgame is either collection autism or raiding autism in which you must wrangle 7 other morons to do hardcore simon says in which you have to do 3 things at once instead of just 2, for an extremely minor BiS upgrade that doesn't matter in any of the content whatsoever. It's the most unfun thing I've ever done in an mmo by far, not because of the gameplay either, but simply spending hours trying to wrangle the other morons to do it only to have at the very least one of them shit the bed on it or fail to learn. When you schedule times with a static it starts to feel like a commitment, a job, which I never found fun, and there was always some drama of someone leaving or getting kicked from the static.
As an aside I hate WoW, I'm not a WoWgay, and I played this game for years because I wanted to like it. But it is just not good, it's barely an RPG, there are no "builds," and while it tries so hard to avoid putting players on unwilling grinds, in a way it needs some kind of grind or some kind of payoff because nothing feels worth it at all.

Admittedly haven't played in a couple years at least but it used to be one of the few remaining games you could drop into a server, nothing to your name, and start manufacturing a legend, in the process kickstarting shitstorms with everyone else there that spirals into further clusterfricks until eight months down the line, you've accidentally become the final boss in a blown out castle and are now hiding slain invader's end-game armour in a cupboard and lying through chat about where you put it hoping it'll despawn before they actually find it

FFXIV is a real videogame, it has:
    >On-rails story (zero choices besides minor dialogue changes)
    >On-rails exploration (After ARR the game keeps blocking you from exploring beyond where the MSQ wants you)
    >On-rails rotations (some classes can even excel sheet entire encounters)
    >On-rails bosses (Boss scripts since Stormblood have close to zero variation, do not react to player behavior in any capacity)
    >On-rails gear (+ilevel and nothing else)
    >On-rails dungeons (corridor with two trash pulls and then an easy boss, three times per dungeon).
It's hard to think of a single game with less decision-making involved.

It's mainly because when people buy video games, they want to play a video game. 50 minute stretches where you set down the controller to eat popcorn has nothing to do with being a video game.

They don't have any good gameplay (raid suck and walled by minmaxer despite being the easiest of the mmo genre, fractal is boring, dungeon is long dead, open world boss grind is unrewarding), social aspect (shit fashion with horrible art style, no housing, no clothing or good emote), pvp (lolbots), and population (they keep deluding themselves as the best mmo while downvoting and banning anyone that says anything bad about the game)

Private servers are the way to go when it comes to MMOs now. Find one for a game you like or used to like and play that. There's tons but here's a few recommendations.

    >HorizonXI
FFXI, actually a much better mmorpg than XIV could ever be, the drama seems strong here as is the autism levels, if it's your thing though you can lose 1000 hours to it in a few weeks. Just don't go in blind, figure out what you're doing before you make an ass of yourself in front of other players, if you're clueless that's very easy to do here unfortunately.
    >TERA Starscape
Be the Elin you always wanted to be but never could because frick whaling on a shit game like TERA. Unfortunately, the game itself is still shit, Starscape will skip you to the actual game rather quickly which is an insufferable grind loop in reality, sadly the nature of the game and probably can't be fixed but atleast you can be an Elin and dress up for free.
    >Project 1999 Everquest
An amazing experience if you can get into it, probably the best of all time. MMORPG never got better than this. It's unforgiving, mysterious, takes forever, you have no maps ingame, if you die you need to do corpse runs, you NEED to interact with other players here, solo isn't an option most times. Thankfully the community is chill af and eager to help eachother out. Kind of amazing really. Its age shows and is a definite barrier of entry though.
    >PSO:BB Ephinea or PSU Clementine
Gonna group these two together, if you want sci-fi animeshit go for these, don't bother with the dumpster fire that is PSO2 NGS. These are where it's at.
    >Shin Megami Tensei IMAGINE (Project New Moon server)
This server actually isn't officially out yet, still in beta, a year ago I would've recommended ReImagine(RIP) but this server is shaping up to be a lot better, making the shit builds more viable. Something to keep on your radar if you're interested in SMT or old mmo pservers. There's also the russian server but I don't really recommend it.

There are tools for hosting your own server locally and playing by yourself. You can give yourself whatever items or shit you want then. The story is actually pretty cool, so it might be worth it just for that. If you mean soloing in an actual server I wouldn't recommend it, atleast use the playershops, there's just too much shit to grind, and if you want to SI (like augmenting your gear pretty much) it requires another character to do it specifically built to do SI. If you're playing on New Moon in beta I wouldn't recommend any of that because it's gonna wipe eventually and not many people are playing pre-wipe anyway.

I assume it's taking long because half the builds in the game were unplayable tier and they're trying to fix that, there's also the matter of drops. In ReImagine they had a fortune card system that mimicked a gacha with ingame points you got from doing dungeons and it was pretty shit. In New Moon they want to have everything drop in dungeons themselves, which seems like it'd have a lot to consider.
plus all the devs are just volunteers, just normal ass dudes trying to get a server for a game they're passionate about off the ground. That's how it is with pservers

it's human nature to pursue advantage

I blame normies for polluting gaming as a whole, because after 2006/2007 every genre in the industry had gone to shit. WoW doubled down on convenience measures during TBC/Wrath and it has the same loops and incentives you see today, focused entirely on instant gratification and nothing for the long term. only now it's extraordinarily optimized for the lowest common denominator to have fun in the equivalent of a kiddie pool. that extends to almost every modern MMO game.

Played FF14 since early ARR. The current state of the game is very dumbed down. Not enough content to be a "main" game.

    >FFXIV
Very streamlined, easily accessible endgame content. Story is the highest priority of the game, no missing stuff because you're outleveling zones or dungeons. Probably most generous demo in the genre.

    >WoW
The crumbling vestiges of a bygone standard of RPGs gives it relatively much mechanical customistazion. You'll have to take a college course in not sucking at the game, but nothing is stopping you from trying to break everything with an absurd combination of ten year old items. Play Ascencion instead.

    >Black Desert
Best world if you are into hiking. Discovering new places can feel like an achievement.

    >PSO2
    Only takes a weekend.

    >Warframe
Relaxed grinding for cool guns and robots, so that you can use them to grind for more shit. A few shockingly good quests show up 100 hours in, but nowadays you'll probably be spoiled for that stuff.

    >Runescape
You can just play it while playing any of the other ones.

    >Dragon's Dogma Online, private server
Barely works, but there's a reason Ganker started a cult for this franchise. Best combat and best classes of any action MMO.

      Anonymous

      >Only takes a weekend.

        >Eve is a full time job disguised as game.
its hands down the most casual of the MMOs
14, WoW, XI, EQ, god fricking forbid you stop playing for more than 2 days and fall behind in gear and progress.
most Eve players only play 1-4 hours a week after they've put the kids to bed, not to mention the game is full of passive income streams, passive skill training, passive research etc that takes place while you're offline.
i used to play FFXI and quit because if you didnt have 5-6 hours of uninterrupted free time to play you literally didnt have time to log in and do anything.
Eve you can jump on, do shit for 10min, jump off if you want.

            Anonymous

been playing for 10 years and have 130mil SP
starter packs are trash, ignore those
all the subscription really gets you is
            >cloaking
            >better mining ships (mining is trash, avoid it)
            >capital ships
            >level 4 missions (also bad)
the 2 go-to PVE ships most people use are Alpha (free) accessible.
Incursions, Exploration, Gas mining, Wormholes, Null ratting, Faction Warfare are all alpha friendly.

""eventually"" you'll cap out on the 20mil SP that Alphas are restricted to, but that'll take you 6-12 months to get that far.
even then, 20mil SP is plenty to fly all the good shit, cuz 90% of the game takes place in Cruisers and smaller.

lastly, you can pay for the sub with in-game money, so once you get space rich and are established you can just do some PVE for a couple of hours and bang sub is paid, a good corp will help you get space rich cuz its in their interests for their members to have money for PVP. (though most Eve players are 40yos with jobs so its cheaper just to work a RL job for 30min and pay the $20)

travel time (other MMOs have too many instant teleport warpers and shit that makes their worlds feel small)
The fantasy version of that is Black Desert. Granted, they've added (fricking expensive) fast travel now, but if you stick with the classic story you'll be busy for a while just physically seeing everthing. Getting slowly comfortable with crossing the desert or the ocean is a feeling other MMOs don't have.

        Anonymous

Fast travel in BDO is fast travel in a massive world done right. It's great for Kama - Vale and it's not instant and you still use the well / portal so there's a story relation there and isn't prompted from the map but it's also not worth it for short distances like Velia - Heidel because of said Magnus segment and it costs way too much, keeping travelers on the roads still. I think they handled it masterfully even though I am not a fan of Juju's design (If he were just an ancient weapon looking thing he'd be good, like without being a little Black person behind it).
We have to recognize that BDO has the largest actual game world apart from RuneScape and that was already true even before Ody came out and now we have Korea on the other side of the fricking ocean.

That's most content in this game summed up. You can also just pay2win yourself a lot of money and skills as well. But doing it the free way is best done in a big corp where nullsec is actually the safest zone which defeats the purpose really. Then you'll have so much money that PvP is just there as more of an activity than anything else. Death has no meaning at this point more than wasted time. Boring.

EVE players hate to admit that their game is pay2win. Can straight up buy skill injectors and sell PLEX. Not only that but you can legally multibox as well which gives a huge advantage for no reason. I'm assuming this is some variation of stockholm syndrome at this point.

In a game that's mostly focused on PVP and player economy, having more resources absolutely helps. Open PVP with full loot/death is balanced of a risk vs reward. When resources are considerably less of a problem, the risk vs reward balance is fricked. A player with a shit ton of resources does not fear death and can afford higher tier weapons. He is not limited by time either. A regular player would have to grind up cash in whatever way which costs him time and makes him think before engaging.

Economy is also an important part in EVE. I don't think I need to explain why real money being a large factor in it would cause inflation. BTW, big corps funnel IRL money into big wars all the time to speedrun people up and get more resources.

invalid points because in Eve's current economy people make billions a month passively and anyone can make a few bil with a couple hours of PVE
its not 2007 where people actually had to grind for 50mil/hr
also FW got revamped, so you literally get paid 150mil/hr to PVP in cheap shitfits

No, it's very passive and centers on focusing targets down before the notHealers can save it. Then you switch to another target and hope they can't save that one. Repeat.

Oh you didn't mean fleet combat? Then no, it's literally just groups of people killing random solo players.

      varies
main thing is it's carried by how final everything is
when you die you lose everything you had on you and 50% of your shit drops as loot for the enemies.

if you're doing solo or small gang PVP its very APM micro intensive like playing a MOBA (pic related)
if you're in big fleets its mostly being on teamspeak with 200 other sweaty nerds and auto-following the fleet commander, who'll tell you who to press F1 on
personally i prefer small gang, gate camps and Faction Warfare (like WoW Battlegrounds basically)

            it is free to play
there are leveling guides for f2p people
there are lots of adventure packs (quest chains and shit) that you can buy that will give you better items and exp
they've made some giveaways of coupons that unlocks almost all content except expansions

also, if you pay a monthly sub, you get access to said adventure packs (but not the expansions) and new races/classes etc

I got the free coupon, unlocked some expansions with ingame premium currency you generate by playing, then bought like two more expansions when they were on sale cheap

A friend started playing with me recently. He's faving lots of fun and really likes the game.

The game is dated and has lots of issues, but so far is the comfiest MMO out there, and if you like D&D then you'll have a blast

How dated are we talking though? 3.5e I'm guessing or do you mean really the game mechanics/controls?

                Anonymous

                yeah it uses the 3.5
also the game feels clunky as frick (I don't know why, it came out around the same tiem as wow)
the interface is ugly as frick
but every quest/dungeon has a story and narrator, really nice ambient music/effects some cool graphical effects (like water reflection on a room)

some spells are also super ugly
my main character is a dwarf sun cleric and my two main spells are nimbus of light and searing light (not sure about this last one)
they look like just a stupid white luminous line
they could've improved it along the years
now, my second character is a human blight caster druid, that uses thorn projectiles
well, they look like fricking small dots/potatoes and that's it
other spells look rad as frick tho

yes Black person. the only reason to play retail is for its raid content. there is no other reason to play, as the quality has only gotten better with time. vanilla/TBC raids are basic compared to retail today. that doesn't mean they're bad, only that there's a night and day comparison when considering old raids to new ones. even Ulduar, as filled with soul as it was, feels basic compared to an intro boss in current era troonyflight.

MMOs were deemed not a good idea by all productive countries therefore there has been a a hidden law or a shadowban if you will on making new ones. That’s why the only new ones come from South Korea or Japan. In the SK they can pretty much do whatever but they are also banned in Japan. Then why does FFIV exist? The Yakuza in Square Enix have enough sway to be able to get it released.

And that’s why you’ll never see another mainstream MMO in the US.

MMO are such a fricked up dead genre right now, all it would take is just one mmo that's even just kind of decent and doesn't go wild with microtransactions and gacha shit, people would eat it up and that company would make millions. Why aren't devs getting on this? Real devs btw not crowdfunding clown scammers. It would be so easy, people are so deprived that xiv is being regarded as the best one and that game is SHIT. Why is it so impossible? Every time there's a new hope, it's the same shit, the same story. Monetization out the ass, company doesn't give a frick, botting, shit updates, out of touch devs, game dies in a month. The steps for that to NOT happen are so simple and easy.
Devs here's what you need to do, not joking:
    >play your own game for more than 5 minutes enough to know when something isn't user-friendly
    >respect your player's time enough to not put them on 5000 hour grinds for minor BiS upgrades
    >monetize cosmetics and not progression. I promise if you do this, people will pay in.
    >put a sub fee if f2p means that you'd need to microtransaction everything out the ass because players are not idiots and will not keep playing your game if it's p2w trash
    >show some level of transparency in what you're doing, silent devs are the fricking worst, if you don't talk to your players you're basically a shadow dev and games like that with 0 communication are guaranteed to die. Hire CMs to do it if you lack the charisma to make basic announcements and update details for your game.

You're both overestimating how popular MMOs are and underestimating how difficult they are to make.
The old style of MMOs, the ones simulating a virtual world, are dead because we're always online now. You being shoved into new communities by algorythm with far greater efficience than we meatbags could get by just talking to each other.
Then from the other end, MMOs have their gameplay outclassed by any other sort of game. Companies want to go online because that way they control your "investment" into the game and pull every behavioral science trick to get you to play/pay more.

And because MMOs want to be entire worlds, their bloody complex. You need to run a mini if you have trading, engineer your community to avoid becomming a wow tier shitshow and run a complete suite of 3d graphics on top of that.

Today I tried out a bunch of mobile games. Most of it is just menus. The highest quality asset are a bunch of jpegs for various anime girls, and each of those directly correlates to more income. MMOs just aren't competetive anymore, that's why they're only a niche product.

      This isn't even remotely true.
Every MMO needs buy-in from being an existing franchise to hook in brand drones to maintain playercount.
Anything else dies because people would rather go back to the MMO they and their friends have collectively sunk 1000s of hours in than put in that time for something that is going to inevitably die.

The on the other side of that coin any MMO created based on a brand is not going to take risks, out of fear of damaging the brand.

        >Every MMO needs buy-in from being an existing franchise to hook in brand drones to maintain playercount.
That's not true. People were hopeful for Blue Protocol before it actually dropped and was shit. That didn't have any kind of brand recognition outside of being a Bamco game. As another example, there's Lost Ark. No brand recognition, plenty of hype. It's because of poor decisions made by the devs and publishers that sucked all the hype out of these games, not a lack of brand recognition.
Again, MMO players are desperate and looking for scraps and will eat up anything that looks REMOTELY decent. It's hard to make this type of game yes but the payoff for making a good one could be immense.

I can’t really recommend it 100% but i also can’t stop playing xiv.
The fact that i dont need alts and can play on a console is also a really nice bonus.
Plus also the point of not actually having to keep playing it all the time, can sub for a patch and finish it before my sub runs out.

Very few skills in this game are single target. There's no tab target or anything similar.

I joined a furry guild without knowing and the GM posted a recruitment add with shit like "HAI UWU WE'RE RECRUITINH UWU PAWNY FURRY FRIENDS" , now I need to wait 7 days to be able to join another guild

            >We're the /vg/ guild. Look us up on the Guild Promotion Board.

I play wow wotlk on my on private server. There is no fomo of feeling the need to do efficient things because it's free, no abysmally low drop rate. I increase the damage and health of mobs, aggro range. I made custom PHP scripts with sqo request to transfer data between my characters do so it's almost like having the system of ff14 with one char that plays all the classes. I can redo quests as much as I want and level up monsters and quest if I want. I'm having a great time, as an RPG, without the economy and competition between players, wow it's really an amazing game.

Biggest issue with MMOs is they can be very expensive and even ones from real companies (Riot) take forever to release and let's not get started on crowdfunded scam MMOs that take 10 years to reach even an initial beta stage if they even do it at all. Before WoW you were getting a new MMO like every six months because the costs weren't prohibitively expensive and a lot used simpler graphical styles. Now every MMO needs to apparently be HIRE THIS MAN tier while also being able to have a billion simultaneous players and connections with everything working correctly with minimal bugs. You will never see a new AAA mmo again in your lifetime.

All MMO's are dead except the Currently Big Things which are WoW, FF14 and ESO. And they are also all dying slowly. Starting a new, comfy mmo is great, nothing like it, but it just feels so bad and like such a waste after a couple months when you start noticing less and less players and activity. Every damn time.

You can buy New World for $15 from G2A and has no monthly sub. I'd recommend trying that, OP. It was abysmal at launch but has gotten a lot better aside from the aids Season Pass they have added. It's a pretty fun time sink even if it still has a long way to go to being considered "good". Also transmog and mounts come out in a big update some time next month so now is a good time to get into it.

FF14 MSQ is probably one of the best experiences you can have in gaming.
The journey to get to Shadowbringers/Endwalker is something special.

I played wow for over 15 years, recently started playing ff14, ff14 is the superior mmo, there is no question, I wish i started playing sooner.

wows only pro is that the engine is (slightly) smoother, but wow gameplay is shit, also wow "community" is fricking garbage, the people that play wow are legitimate sub-humans, the game attracts the most dumbest, low iq, self serving, fomo obsessed morons the human race has to offer, wow players are either in down syndrome mode or hyper autist mode, there is no inbetween, you play with morons or spegs, and it's never fun.

WoW also has nothing but raiding, which ff14 does better, ff14 unironically has the better players, but at the same time they are more chill and don't have egos and autism like all wow players do.

wow devs are also completely pathetic sub-humans that don't even play or police their game, wow is infested with bots and rmt, wow devs spend more time tweeting and virtue signalling than they do designing the game, they are constantly putting gay shit and ugly characters in the game and doing your typical "stick it to the chuds" western studio shit.

ff14 downside is it can feel like a single player game when you are first starting and doing the main story quests, but as you level up the mmo aspects start rolling in and it eventually feels 1000x times better than wow.
