Legit the greatest FPS franchise since STALKER. Such a blessing that they exist.
but man, I wish they would put more of the game underground
the Dam, the Metro, water treatment plant, the military bunkers, those were best levels in both episodes
Botanic gardens looked fantastic, but they opened too much at times to flex that giant glass dome
>the Dam, the Metro, water treatment plant, the military bunkers, those were best levels in both episodes
The sewers in 2063 were incredible, not only an FPS sewer map that isn't shit, but an outright masterpiece of atmosphere and exploration.
>Botanic gardens looked fantastic, but they opened too much at times to flex that giant glass dome
They barely even ran on my computer, lagged like frick every time I went into a main dome area. I can agree that the biggest graphics-gameplay gap was in that level, the trap plants were annoying too, but overall even it was still a highly memorable experience.
to this day I don't know if that weidass tree thing that ran away from you was immortal or just moronicly tough
I wasted so much ammo on it it's unreal
kek I had already forgotten that. I had a completely full arsenal and spent every single round just to make sure. If it wasn't invincible there must have been some kind of special secret to kill it.
Needs to run a newer version of GZDoom. I used 4.7.1 which still had some issues with reflections and the aforementioned one laggy level, otherwise it ran fine.
I need a quick rundown, why is it good? Is it just a Stalker styled doomwad or are their new mechanics?
It's more Fallout and Mad Max than STALKER in style. Mechanically it plays like a boomer shooter, just extremely high quality and with Build-level detail (dedicated melee button, aiming is important, verticality is important, big urban areas with lots of secrets, etc). There are also extremely light RPG-esque elements in that you collect scrap (currency) which you can use to buy certain things like weapon upgrades, and there are also npcs with light conversations and hub areas. It's basically the best of Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, Strife, and Hexen all combined into a mutant-ravaged hellscape. If Ashes 2063 and Afterglow were a single game and released commercially, it could legitimately qualify as the greatest FPS ever made.
sounds noice, might check it out
fantastic gunplay, great level design, a fricking bike to travel between areas, scavenging, trading, weapon upgrades and actual missions given by NPC's
fist episode is "linear" in a sense that you constantly move forward, like in first 2 Metro games
second ep has hubs with adjacent levels you can enter and return from when doing missions and these is some longer one way trips like in Half Life 2 as you progress
story is 80's cheese, but it's good cheese, and it's unfolding as you progress
Its a great mod for post apoc atmosphere gays. If you want constant action, this is not for you. First episode is very linear, 2nd is much more open and has hub levels.
Does this work on any other engine than GZDOOM? It's giving me some serious vsync problems and I can't figure out why.
what mode are you running it with? (OpenGL/Vulkan)
I tried both and nothing changed.
the uppermost download on ModDB page (Ashes: Stand Alone Version 1.03)
comes pre-packed with everything and set up
just run one of the
>Play Episode [number]
BAT files
Thanks. Is this the entire game so far?
yep
someone is making an expansion already and they do want to make ep3
it's all on ModDB if you want to check it out
There's also a quasi-official (creator-endorsed) fan mod called Ashes Dead Man Walking. I haven't played it yet but it seems well-received.
nvm, that pack has the fan mod already included as an expansion, I guess that makes it fully official now. Really need to play it then.
Dead man walking is not amazing but pretty good. Its some small side story.
Not sure if GZDoom is an absolute requirement, but it does use advanced features like room-over-room which most ports do not support.
ENTER
the sheer fricking size and density of maps, coupled with quest giving NPC's and bandits, creepy ghosts and psychic mutants in dark tunnels in this mod made me contemplate a Metro 2033 mod that would let you explore more of Glukhovsky's METRO, instead of revolving around two gay caricature factions, spending half of the game above ground and then fricking off on a Transsiberian train trip...
I mean, just look at this thing...
>Mental Hazard
Warehouses of leaking autism barrels?
Spoooky ghosts
how would I go about doing this?
>Actually good level design, secret hunting is actually fun and requires a good eye for detail
>monsters that are unique aren't just doom reskins
>Not for minotaurs, straight improvement over doom
It's a 12 dollar game in a mod.
>Add double/triple barreled shotgun
>Stock shotgun tossed into the dustbin
>Uhhh what if add bayonet and reload speed upgrades
WHAT was he thinking?
3barrel is an overkill for most anything
I only used it on fat frick mutants
>Running out of ammo
Oh shit mutie what are you doing?
who are you quoting?
I only play on the scavenger difficulty. Its not about running out of ammo. Shotgun is better for lots of weak enemies because it has a higher sustained rate of fire and slightly longer reach. With the triple barrel you just waste lots of ammo and time.
>mfw I finished the game with like 200 rounds for AR because the game gives it to you way too early, then starves you for ammo for like 6 hours and you become super conservative with it
I really like how you need to make every bullet count in the earlier chapters. Brings a certain tension with it that not many games emulate.
Standard shotgun for lots of small shit, triple barrel for big shit.
Why is the difference between the revolver and pistol so small? The revolver is slightly stronger (and seems to get crits idk) but lacks magazine and rate of fire.
it's a boomer shooter anon, you have to find each gun's optimal use
Pistol in Doom is useless after getting the shotgun and has no optimal use
the pistol (in Ashes) is more than enough to mow down whole packs of raiders throughout both episodes
it's actually fricking ridiculous when fully upgraded in EP2
I would rather say it kinda diminishes relevancy of the SMG, but then again, SMG can be upgraded too and you have 3 pistol magazines worth of lead to hose with
Some guns are just superior anon
Any other kino total conventions for doom? (played Hedon and Aliens Eradication)
Pirate Doom!
It was one of my first TC and I keep it fondly in my memory.
Is this mod just Doom with a pirate skin or does it have unique gameplay?
Mostly a reskin with a whole campaign attached to it.
Frickin love me some Pirate doom. The dual pistols are stupid and I love them.
That one TC that is just basicly slaughterhouse the arcade game
Probably not what you're looking for but I tried Total Chaos, a horror game, when it came out and that was pretty impressive.
Looks very impressive. Goes on the list. Im now playing the demo for Trenchfoot. Hope the hype is deserved. After that comes Siren.
what the hell, how does it look so fricking good?
Gzdoom is a 3d engine emulating the doom engine, you can frick around with it a lot.
But GZDoom is not suited for that kind of stuff, giving the poor performance. You can do it but that doesn't mean you should.
Doom modding is fricking impressive. Look at this shit. wtf.
I realize and appreciate the combat on display very much, but showcasing it in vanilla DOOM levels on vanilla DOOM enemies looks beyond silly
Total Chaos is getting an Unreal Engine standalone version.
Guncaster is of high quality.
Personally waiting for Trench Foot.
>Speakers blasting a distorted national hymn as nukes are being launched
>the fricking gate closes and you turn around in panic to look what the frick is going on when the anthem starts blasting, just to see them
that was pretty fricking smart
also I almost shat myself, because I though the psyker b***h isn't dead and trapped me in
since you unwittingly brought up Death Stranding, did I get this right:
there was no WWIII, US literally nuked itself in 1984 to stop some sort of paranormal cataclysm from happening?
>spoiler
That's a pretty neat and original background reason for a post-apocalyptic setting. Also grim futures+the supernatural are kino.
>Deadlands: Hell on Earth
https://files.catbox.moe/4h57jc.jpg
What caused the entire crew on that teleported Russian sub to become ghosts? Was it solely radiation, or was something else at play?
the thing that made Athena to launch the nukes at her own cities. They call it Background Despair
>Entire Soviet sub level
only 11 enemies and god damn they are hard as frick, ended up to a shitload of medkits, also that extra message at the end. worth it.
The dev behind it is pretty based too.
I talked with him a few years ago, and he's going to include a Fallout: Miami reference and we'll include an arcade machine of Ashes 2063 in return.
Is there ever gonna be a "vaccinated" edition of this? I want to play it with Hideous Destructor.
you "can" play it with Hideous Destructor
What do you mean "can"
they have standalone map pack and weapon pack so you can load it with any gameplay mod
Holy shit ok, I'll give it a try
You were right, it werks. Thank you, I had no idea the sterilized version had come out a month ago
It's decent. I feel like the exterior sections were the weakest parts of the game, the ones where you could control the bike. Lots of empty space without anything to really explore or look at.
bike sections were pretty boring, yeah
they could offset it if they sprinkled it with more places where you would catch something interesting in the corner of your eye, get off and look around for stuff
I was constantly stopping, because I thought I found something, but then it turned out to be nothing, and in the end it became clear that parts where they wanted you to stop are in your face
there was one exception I had
on the last bike section, riding towards Sigma Base, was a small substation guarded by a bunch of those shadow the edgehog flamethrower homies and behind it were ladder that descended down to the lake
bit further, there is a clearing with a dead guy and his stuff and the moment you come close more flamethrower c**ts fly out from the bushes
after that, if you followed the river (and essentially backtracked half of the longest level in the game on foot, you ran into what felt like 20 of those crazy trash pile ninja women and next to them is a door that takes you to a tall stairwell, and halfway up is a platform you 1) have to spot while being chased by 20 crazy ninjas and 2) have to jump on without breaking your legs - with best armor in the game, so good it has a fricking theme song when you put it on
that was nice
>that guy at The Wall who tells you why he fricked off from the city and never went back after being on watch one evening and you think heh, cool imagination, old man, and then you see what he saw
How do I play it? I've never modded a game.
you do what this post says
there is no modding involved
So I need to have doom II on steam or..?
no, you don't need to have anything
just download that one file, unpack it somewhere and do what the post said
Thanks.
have fun
one tip
game has sprint toggle (default is Caps Lock) and sprint is on by default
some platforming sections require you to alternate between the two
just though I would prevent you form rage quitting from fricking tutorial
>game already punches you in the ribs in the fricking tutorial on Survival Mode
Didn't expect that when I played it for the first time.
Next time try to read the damn readme.txt
Relax you frickin troony lmao
Not really, it has cool looking maps but I got bored halfway through
One of the best mods I've ever played in my life! And yes, it puts to shame most of the current AAA games. Most modern games are too busy shoving the mandatory political ideologies, putting above gameplay and story so much and so hard, they hinder both of them.
Ashes may have its flaws (just like everything, it's normal), but it delivers what any gamer wishes: a fun and immersive game with a story and world so cool, they keep you thinking about them even after you finish playing. This is what makes a game good and memorable.
Those woke triple A game might also be remembered, but for the wrong reasons.
But I digress. I'm looking forward for the Hard Reset prequel as well the third episode, good luck for the developers!
While many AAA games are too busy pushing their filthy political ideologies and destroying any fun in their games, Ashes deliver what games should be all about: a fun and involving gameplay booted with an involving story that keeps you thinking even after you finish the game.
Kudos for the developers! I'm looking forward for the Hard Reset prequel with Walker and episode 3! Keep up the great quality, guys, you're an example for both game developers and players!
