Anything that changes the experience in any ways usually is done to give you advantage over anyone that doesn't use it.
It usually doesn't start bad, maybe crosshair overlay or something small like that (this is still cheating because you have objectively better time aiming that anyone that doesn't use it), but it quickly ramps up as the arms race starts and soon you have mods that transform 2d data from your minimap to 3d data or vice versa, and when community accepts that hard cheats are no different at that point.
