I have played N64 shovelware racing games with better feel than this shit. This game fails at basic racing mechanics. This game is one of the worst kart racers I have ever played. I didn't have a problem with the tutorial. It was 90 minutes long and didn't teach me everything about the game, but whatever. I got the hang of the most basic controls and that's what matters.
What sucks is that even after finishing the supposed crash course into playing, the game feels the need to babysit me by telling me I'm not ready to head online. b***h, you're not the one who decides that. Let me give you a long analysis why the toombling just sucks from a game design perspective
In life, bad experiences are twice as powerful as good experiences (which is why the bike cuck way of thinking doesn't work)
They've done studies on this shit, people are only willing to bet 5 bucks on a coin flip if they stand to win 10, not 5
Take a fighting game: in every match there is one winner and one loser, the winner gets +1 happiness while the loser gets -2 happiness, everyone eventually ends up salty
Now in a game like mario kart, you have a player who throws the item (feels good) while another gets hit (feels bad)
When you throw the shell, you feel good because you aimed like a champ, your character does a little celebratory animation and goes "oh yeah, luigi time" or whatever
The player who gets hit does a little spin in place and stops, which sucks a bit, and is back in the race immediately
In drrr, you just leave 90% of items on the track or throw them backwards (because good luck aiming this shit), then hope it hits someone at some point, your only indication this happened is a quick voice line that is also repeated for most actions like boosting so you don't even know
So for the character that got hit, they are sent flying all over the place, not just losing their speed but being sent backwards half a lap, while the player has a seizure, you lose your rings too because frick you, and it takes 10 seconds total at least to get back into the race, in a game in which everyone moves much faster than mario kart so every second lost is a bigger deal and hurts more, then when you finish the lap the game gives you an obnoxiously large thumbs down icon to tell you that you suck, all while the guy who hit you probably isn't even aware he did
In other words, they somehow minimized enjoyment while maximizing pain

You don't throw a shell to hit someone, you throw a shell because you are driving a brick until you do

He was also the creator of SRB2 Riders, which is where Kart originated from since Riders had side race modes. So SRB2 Riders had Riders gameplay, Sonic R styled, and Mario Kart (probably as a joke since there was a joke Mario themed level in base SRB2 at the time).

I don't dislike it (I even like the ring and trick stuff, conceptually) but it feels more stressful to play rather than being entirely fun. The downtime after getting hit with anything is absolutely disastrous, getting off road kills your speed too much and the visual clarity of the road itself is often poor to the point where I'm wondering WHERE the turn starts or end.
It's clear they tested with people who know the game and tracks inside and out rather than get feedback from more inexperienced players.

I loaded up SRB2K for the first time in years and the kart handles like a dream right out of the box, in Ring Racers you have to master a bunch of obtuse new mechanics just for the game to start to feel playable and even then it's still not fun.
The vanilla game is not that much more complicated than Mario Kart, you just get used to the drifting and items then you’re good to go. But then the vanilla servers died out, and in their place were modded servers with extraneous shit like acrobatics.
They could've at least made the fast fall bounce properly off slopes so if you did it on a steep hill it'd bounce you at the appropriate angle with increased speed, but it feels like it literally just adds a flat +Z when you hit the ground regardless of the geometry.

The fact is that most of the mechanics of this game actually simplify gameplay while being obtuse. There is usually an objectively correct approach to something under particular conditions. It's absolutely an autism simulator, all your decisions are made for you if you grasp the mechanics.
However, this is a racing game, not a fricking puzzle game. People don't usually play racing games because they want to play a puzzle game.
Except this is a puzzle game where sometimes the physics have a seizure and make you change which autism track you are on.
The core problem is that the shitty, unliked mechanics of the game force themselves into the gameplay, and won't let you play a racing game. Just look at how fricking, irrecoverably, disgusting handling feels in this game, that's all you really need to know. Racing mechanics were bent over and fricked on the altar of some fricking autistic mechanics fantasy. This is racing solitaire at best. A racing game for people that hate racing games.

I don't think I've seen anyone use the respawn button and they shouldn't have to (it's also a 5 second loss)
Powering the kart with rings is a change that I actually enjoy but all the other mechanics that suck bog it down- and that's not even getting into the horse shit track design.

I've actually used spindash a couple of times but only when I end up completely fricked in offroad or stuck at the bottom of a hill without any rings around anywhere (usually because a wave of bullshit flung me into that position)
I think the worst part about this game is that in spite of the overcomplicated mechanics, stupid ass ai, horribly balanced items, and absolutely awful stages, it's still way too easy to win due to how items work in this game.
The marble garden drill might be the most busted item I’ve ever seen in a kart racer, as soon as you gather some degree of control over it you rubber-band even harder than the AI

But the playing field isn't even at all, frontrun is the worst it's ever been because there are 3 items per row for 16 players, so everyone is just slowly chugging rings while you, in first, are doing the same because rings are everywhere, meanwhile you are also taking 1/3 of the items available and laying down traps constantly
and then the ONLY counter to that is people stacking 4 power items and flying past at 400mph, or getting hit by a grow and literally flying into the finish line, or simply hoping that the person in first runs into a hazard that he cant see (aka all hazards) or gets fricked by the jank physics more than you did

compared to the rest of the racers, first place is most often at a deficit and forced to grab items in many cases which gives the racers behind a better oppurtunity to catch up via ring boxes and catch up items vs bananas. I've been playing intentionally to not use ring, just finished a cup with all firsts except for the last race. Unironically not diffrent at all. The hardest part is trying to avoid the rubber banding.

You need rings on drifts turns, and drafts.
All mechancis slow you down without rings.
Lights can't go for easy cornering and heavies can't attack
All the characters end up taking the same lines and playing the same.

Ive played enough srb2k online to see the very real problem of first place cemented and keeping it while the pack gets fricked, I respect that first place at the beginning of the race is not guaranteed first place at the end of the race.

I don't dislike it (I even like the ring and trick stuff, conceptually) but it feels more stressful to play rather than being entirely fun. The downtime after getting hit with anything is absolutely disastrous, getting off road kills your speed too much and the visual clarity of the road itself is often poor to the point where I'm wondering WHERE the turn starts or end.
It's clear they tested with people who know the game and tracks inside and out rather than get feedback from more inexperienced players.

The devs are so spiteful and insistent that the game be played their way that the passwords were encrypted. By giving the unlock addons and online passwords for free, they are admitting that they fricked up.
They encrypted shit in the game files apparently to make it harder for would-be password hunters to gain all of them. Someone just straight up hacked the EXE to add more passwords in manually rather than deal with the hunt.

Let me give you a long analysis why the toombling just sucks from a game design perspective
In life, bad experiences are twice as powerful as good experiences (which is why the bike cuck way of thinking doesn't work)
They've done studies on this shit, people are only willing to bet 5 bucks on a coin flip if they stand to win 10, not 5
Take a fighting game: in every match there is one winner and one loser, the winner gets +1 happiness while the loser gets -2 happiness, everyone eventually ends up salty
Now in a game like mario kart, you have a player who throws the item (feels good) while another gets hit (feels bad)
When you throw the shell, you feel good because you aimed like a champ, your character does a little celebratory animation and goes "oh yeah, luigi time" or whatever
The player who gets hit does a little spin in place and stops, which sucks a bit, and is back in the race immediately
In drrr, you just leave 90% of items on the track or throw them backwards (because good luck aiming this shit), then hope it hits someone at some point, your only indication this happened is a quick voice line that is also repeated for most actions like boosting so you don't even know
So for the character that got hit, they are sent flying all over the place, not just losing their speed but being sent backwards half a lap, while the player has a seizure, you lose your rings too because frick you, and it takes 10 seconds total at least to get back into the race, in a game in which everyone moves much faster than mario kart so every second lost is a bigger deal and hurts more, then when you finish the lap the game gives you an obnoxiously large thumbs down icon to tell you that you suck, all while the guy who hit you probably isn't even aware he did
In other words, they somehow minimized enjoyment while maximizing pain

No, it still uses all the same voice clips from SRB2k including a hit confirm, it's just with all the other shit going on, it's easy to not notice
when i first played srb2k the first thing that got me kekking my sides was all the characters and their voicelines, especially custom characters like billy herrington etc, and you notice each and every voiceline

The lines are there, but your character is machinegunning their lines because of how much shit is happening at all times, so it's easy to miss.
Besides that, the hot potato nature of items in general means that using them against people isn't the goal, it's getting it out of your hands as quickly as possible, which means you're not usually listening for it. You don't throw a shell to hit someone, you throw a shell because you are driving a brick until you do

The downtime after getting hit with anything is absolutely disastrous, getting off road kills your speed too much and the visual clarity of the road itself is often poor to the point where I'm wondering WHERE the turn starts or end.

I loaded up SRB2K for the first time in years and the kart handles like a dream right out of the box, in Ring Racers you have to master a bunch of obtuse new mechanics just for the game to start to feel playable and even then it's still not fun.

The vanilla game is not that much more complicated than Mario Kart, you just get used to the drifting and items then you’re good to go. But then the vanilla servers died out, and in their place were modded servers with extraneous shit like acrobatics.
They could've at least made the fast fall bounce properly off slopes so if you did it on a steep hill it'd bounce you at the appropriate angle with increased speed, but it feels like it literally just adds a flat +Z when you hit the ground regardless of the geometry.

There's a difference between complexity and bloat.
The fact is that most of the mechanics of this game actually simplify gameplay while being obtuse. There is usually an objectively correct approach to something under particular conditions. It's absolutely an autism simulator, all your decisions are made for you if you grasp the mechanics.
However, this is a racing game, not a fricking puzzle game. People don't usually play racing games because they want to play a puzzle game.
Except this is a puzzle game where sometimes the physics have a seizure and make you change which autism track you are on.
The core problem is that the shitty, unliked mechanics of the game force themselves into the gameplay, and won't let you play a racing game. Just look at how fricking, irrecoverably, disgusting handling feels in this game, that's all you really need to know. Racing mechanics were bent over and fricked on the altar of some fricking autistic mechanics fantasy. This is racing solitaire at best. A racing game for people that hate racing games.

But the playing field isn't even at all, frontrun is the worst it's ever been because there are 3 items per row for 16 players, so everyone is just slowly chugging rings while you, in first, are doing the same because rings are everywhere, meanwhile you are also taking 1/3 of the items available and laying down traps constantly
and then the ONLY counter to that is people stacking 4 power items and flying past at 400mph, or getting hit by a grow and literally flying into the finish line, or simply hoping that the person in first runs into a hazard that he cant see (aka all hazards) or gets fricked by the jank physics more than you did

The devs are so spiteful and insistent that the game be played their way that the passwords were encrypted. By giving the unlock addons and online passwords for free, they are admitting that they fricked up.
They encrypted shit in the game files apparently to make it harder for would-be password hunters to gain all of them. Someone just straight up hacked the EXE to add more passwords in manually rather than deal with the hunt.
Why is there even non-item collision damage in this game, legitimately you can fricking attack slam people across the track by just speeding into them. Who on the team thought this was a fricking good idea?
