It's so much better for so many other reasons as well. With the maps being separated, the developers can treat each zone as its own level, and they do. This leads to more variety and detail in the environments. It also works from a geographic perspective since the zones don't have to be physically connected, so even though you travel from one zone to another they can take place much further apart than a physically connected map would allow. A great example of this is Valstrax's nest on top of the spire, it's way above the rest of the map but it doesn't break any continuity because you travel there through a loading screen. That type of level design simply isn't possible in World or Rise.

I'm generally against loading screens of any form but Monster Hunter really is the exception.

I think rise did a great job with both sandy plains and jungles
Not so much with flooded forest where some connections don't make sense if you remember old map

          Anonymous

Flooded forest and shrine ruins are definitely the weakest maps, if only because they're so depressing and drab. Flooded forest also has one of the only difficult buddy recon choices in any of the maps, and it's a bit of the pain in the ass depending on whether you're fighting an aquatic monster or anything else.

I'm also a big fan of Rise's versions of jungle and sandy plains, though.

I don't particularly dislike the volcano, the sub-camps and buddy recon at least make it painless to get around, although that's arguably just a band-aid for mediocre map design.

There's no difference, it's all just design decisions. They could remake the old maps without loading zones if they wanted to and you wouldn't even lose anything. In fact, I hope they do with Wilds just to shut you people up.

I think it'd still be possible in Rise, all you need is a big wirebug near the bottom of the spire that launches you through the clouds onto the top zone. Great Wirebugs if utilized properly can be great for traveling big distances but in Rise they pretty much serve as a slightly better dog for travelling around

Yeah, plus segmented maps allow them to put magnificent backgrounds and landscapes across the horizon, which is not possible with 5trh gen maps. They're called "open maps" but they're actually small closed rooms separated by claustrophobic corridors.

          >put magnificent backgrounds and landscapes across the horizon, which is not possible with 5trh gen maps

        >Old maps tended to be incredibly samey
Maybe gen 1 and 2, but 3 onward the maps start to see a lot of variety. Meanwhile in World and Rise some maps have a single theme throughout every single zone. You can't argue that there aren't limitations to creativity when you have to physically connect each zone, the only option is some kind of theme park like Guiding Lands.

Hoarfrost has a lot of different shit going on despite it all being an ice map
And Rise has Lava Caverns which explicitly has a marsh-caves + volcano and the Citadel in Sunbreak has like 4 different parts to it (fields, castle, swamp, mountain)
There isn't anything that limits them from throwing some weird shit into a corner somewhere on the map

            Anonymous

They're not but it creates an incoherent experience, Citadel is just like Guiding Lands in that respect. But it does limit them when it comes to the physical locations of each zone.

I can't think of a single thing about any map in World or Rise that feels "incoherent" for how the maps are set up. They all feel incredibly believable. Also World and Rise were full of great backdrops to your hunts so that's also not something exclusive to segmented maps.

        Anonymous

it's not that i failed to navigate them, it's that you run, run, run, and run again, it go tiresome really quickly
yes, all you do in MH games is running around the maps, except old school maps are tiny and so it takes at worst 2 minutes to cross the whole map

          Anonymous

If it's taking you more than 2 minutes for any run besides going from the bottom to the top of ancient forest without using any latchbug grapples you're doing something wrong
Rise especially since you can skip every inconvenient hallway outside of caves to run between zones

          Anonymous

That's why World, Rise and now Wilds gives you tools to make navigating maps quicker. Ancient Forrest is quite literally the only map in either 2 games where this criticism could even maybe be applied and even that's a stretch.

Once you figure out all the little tunnels in ancient forest it's really easy, I really like the maps in world, makes them feel alive. I REALLY like the sky boxes and the different times, weather/shading it all brings. Just looks really nice.

              Anonymous

I think the biggest problem with the Ancient Forest isn't navigating it. It's how claustrophobic it's sometimes designed so that you just aren't given enough space to fight monsters in. You can tell it was an early development map cause later maps give you a lot more space to move about in. Hoarfrost Reach is definitely the map that I think combines aesthetics and gameplay the best.

I really don't understand this. Which areas in particular are you talking about? Because I don't ever feeling claustrophobic other than the rare cases I catch a monster in the hallways between zones.

It's mainly an issue in the north and north east parts of the map and some areas in the upper zones.

                Anonymous

Eh, I don't see it. The northern parts of the map are plenty open and the only thing you really fight in the upper areas are Tobi which is small enough to be fine there. I could see the Rath nest being a bit small for Rathalos but otherwise I don't see the issue.

Rath also never gets to actually spend much time fighting in the nest because of the waterfall trap

You constantly fight monsters in the transition corridors between zones. The one to the left of the Pukei Pukei sleeping spot. The map is also full of winding terrain with shit in the middle of the spots that would otherwise be open. I don't know what to tell you if you say you don't see it but not having enough space to fight monsters in was the biggest criticism of the Ancient Forrest as a map since World released and the entire reason Lagiacrus couldn't be added.

                >You constantly fight monsters in the transition corridors between zones
You can back up into the room and they'll follow you if you don't wanna deal with it, what's different about that vs monsters charging into loading screens?

                Anonymous

What do you mean what is the difference? Both are bad but other maps give you enough big open spaces that it doesn't happen that often. I mention Hoarfrost as a great map because most of it's zones are big and open and don't have much in the way of corridors that monsters can be funnelled into.

That'd be perfect, so it will never happen.

No because we're talking about something like this:

            >Desert map
            >One area is yellow, Sahara-like sand desert zone.
            >One area is red, rocky desert.
            >One area is oasis type zone with a mix of desert and some tropical vegetation + water.
            >One are is muddy desert / swamp like that zone in World desert zone.

You can't have a full map with each of these biomes, it would be too redundant, but you can have them all as large open areas forming one map.

        Anonymous

I actually think that would be the best way to do an "open world" in Wilds. Maps that are massive and open but you can transition through loading screen to other large parts of the map to make them feel vast.

It has the benefit of being fully open like an open world game but doesn't have the entire map in one place to make it feel smaller. You get the best of both worlds pretty much. Without zone transitions there actually isn't any reason to design the maps with corridors leading into each zone.

Classic MonHun map design would be significantly improved if they didn't place the camp in the furthest corner of every single map behind a herbivore-only zone. Alternatively, I don't see anything wrong with the concept of secondary camps - as long as there isn't fast travel between camps. Choosing a secondary camp to spawn at is merely another aspect of preparation.

      Anonymous

Easy. Gen was rushed slop that was made to buy time for World. GU became “the only classic monhun you should play” because secondaries didn’t even know the series existed before World and never owned a 3DS/Wii U/PSP so the Switch title is the only thing “accessible” to them

  15. 4 months ago

How do I get into this game? I've played a lot of 4U (Made it to G-Rank) but it never really clicked. I tried world and it wasn't really hitting me either, I really want to like it but the combat just isn't all that engaging to me.

If it helps here are the weapons I used

    >Light Bowgun

It has stuff I like in it but the combat just feels like nothing to me 90% of the time. A lot of the content just feels like filler.

          Anonymous

That's because it is filler anon. All of MH is doing the same thing over and over again to get better stats and do slightly harder fights. If you don't like that it isn't for you.

          Anonymous

The combat IS the game. Monster Hunter is about mastering weapons, monsters, and specific weapon and monster match-ups. The "story" and equipment progression are just carrots for extrinsically-motivated players. I hate playing with extrinsically-motivated players who are likely to stop playing as soon as the game becomes a "grind"; not because they stop playing, I hate the ones who complain that there's "no content" without engaging with half of it.

If you don't like Monster Hunter combat, you should probably shouldn't be playing the game. That's the meat of it.

            Anonymous

I guess I'm on copium but is there anything that would cause me to like the combat more? I don't feel like I'm bad at considering I've done most of the game solo and even did some G Rank solo, it just doesn't feel fun to me or captivating.

              Anonymous

World is a bit basic, and I'd argue that the game's emphasis is more on the experience of hunting. I haven't played 4U yet, so I can't speak to it. If you're looking for more "engaging" combat, you should consider trying a portable game like GU or Sunbreak. Sunbreak gameplay is faster-paced and allows for more freedom of "skill expression" or whatever you want to call it, but it's a bit ridiculous. GU has some of the best content in the series, but the weapon / style balance is wonky.

I do really like the variety that zones that aren't physically connected allows, but I would definitely trade that for no loading screens and no "monster wont fricking GET OUT OF THE TRANSITION YOU b***h".
Maybe if they did sort of a hybrid where each zone had like 3-4 big areas made up of a couple of zones. Excuse my shitty photo editing skills, and obviously they'd have to make it a bit more complex than this but you get the idea. Half a rise map for each chunk and each chunk has a few different subareas.

yes and no, trailing monsters was painful and the map was shit confusing. One of the longest walk cycles at least until you unlocked all the camps.
They should've done the thing of Tri were the map gradually opens up.

    >Cart to P.Malzeno
    >Start the run back to him
    >Fricker runs 2 whole zones and meets me in the middle of 2 zones
    >All the while throwing out attacks before I can bring him into a place thats not a goddamn corridor
I'll admit this was a level of hatred I was not expecting to experience, especially since he was basically on the other side of the map when I started the run back.

God Eater is probably my least favourite MH clone. I somewhat tolerate toukiden and enjoyed Wild Hearts but God Eater is actual trash.

        Meh
I wish there could be like one MH clone series that didn't die or shit the bed immediately

        slop eater!

        Why

Im playing it right now and its not bad

I play MH for actually good gameplay and being immersed in an action fantasy hunting sim. I play God Eater for the same reason I watch trash isekai slop, which is waifus and self-insert cringekino. Except 3 because you can make some absolute semen demon femprotags with the whole hobo + electrical tape shit going on. Both are fun in their own way but if you buy GE games or Code Vein at full price you're a moron.

Great map but zones 9/10/11 are the clear flaw
Only a single way in and it's as far as possible from the camp
Wouldn't be much of an issue if monsters almost never went there but they do
Just having one more connection there would have been much better

Really could've used a shortcut from camp to 10 or 11

    >post a bunch of threat level one 4 reward tempered quests today
    >5 Jyuratodus 5 Rathian
    >very few players are tenderizing
    >Nobody is dungbombing the Deviljho that shows up
    >non japanese players are dying to Jyuratodus thrash attack
    >greatsword players don't know what to do when the monster is asleep
    >players standing in front of rathian during fireblast
It was like playing ranked in a moba

i was trying to do kushala and teostra HR sos
the amount of people carting is insane, do people just refuse to use high defense/elemental resist? first time playing through i just ignored it and built survival/defense with speed eating/healthboost

    >want to use the pompadour because I always use the pompadour in MH games
    >The nice big one is fricking DLC
    >Which itself is iceborne DLC so you need iceborne ontop of buying the dlc
    go frick yourself capcom
glad I can creamAPI that shit but I don't want to start Iceborne yet, can I just activate it all and ignore iceborne until I'm done with base?

Iceborne doesn't add anything to the base game

        Incorrect.
Iceborne radically changes certain weapon movesets and allows you to use the slinger with your weapon out.

Jurassic Frontier would've been decent if 10->3 was 2 ways. Because it isn't, it's an absolute chore to go to 10 or 11
