Iceborne/World is pretty good. Personally, I dislike the mantles and how often you had to upkeep tenderize especially if you were using a light weapon. Switch Axe got some really cool stuff from Base game and Iceborne that it didn't have in 4u/Gen that made the transfer over to Rise as well like the Axe Fade Slash and the ability to Morph after just about any attack.
The time gated hunts like Kulve Taroth were neat but having it felt bad having some of the best/relevant weapon coming from a raid style fight with brutal rng was pretty lame. I did enjoy grinding lands especially if you coordinated with others to level up opposite regions.
4u is probably my favorite overall.
Gen had better monster variety and is a close second.
My favorite weapon the strongest in RiseBreak.
I feel like the series is has been trying to take itself more seriously with each game. A lot of the goofy charm from the older titles grows increasingly absent. Frick egg quests.
I am the bottom except Rise was only briefly fun. Something about the combat is really dull. It may literally just come down to how slicing and hitstun feels which sounds dumb but I swear the game just feels like I'm smacking a rubber hammer against rocks all the time. Also World is kinda based once you get to end game grinding but the story section is fricking boring. Handler is very annoying and collecting foot prints is fricking stupid. I enjoyed it overall though and I love every single MH prior (I started on PS2).
I hate that the dog isn't afforded the same basic mobility that the player has without wirebugs. It really bugs me that the dog can't wall run vertically in a straight line up the wall for areas with lots of climbing. The fact that I have to dismount the dog to climb a wall then get back on to the dog drives me nuts. Please tell me that I'm just a giant sperg and there's some secret dog movement tech that I'm not aware of. Sometimes it feels like even two wirebugs and huffing it during the cd is faster than getting back on the dog.
You can sharpen while dogging. Can't while wirebugging around. Dogs can also drift like a car. Wirebugging around is more fun to do so I just pick Palico anyway.
Yeah, I like the dog shopping cart and the dog sharpener. Dog drifting feels weird to me. Double gathering cat has been pretty nuts for gems and mantles lately combined with having to sharpen less often makes the dog less appealing.

i played MHW when it came out and beat almost everything but then never played Iceborne. i want to play Iceborne now but i'm not sure if it's better to continue my old file or a make a new one from scratch

I've never understood this complaint. Are you guys intentionally going to camp mid hunt cursing and screaming each hunt? I've never used that feature outside the few times I start a quest and forgot something or brought the wrong weapon. The equivalent before was to abandon quest and start it over.
Replaying it now and loving it.
I hope they borrow more from Worldborne (the most popular and lucrative MH to date) instead of past shit and rise shit.
When is the proper time to fight primordial malzeno? Am I supposed to be able to beat him when he's unlocked or is he the big bad im supposed to fight later?
It would be more soulful if they had implemented the Gun Sword from Lost Planet 2 as a new weapon class

There's a quickstart option that gives you gear meant to tackle early Iceborne.

Remove the clutch claw and the MMO cancer (sieges, decorations, gacha in general) and the game would be 10/10
World had soul. A marginally different soul compared to the first few games of the franchise but "soul" nonetheless.
