I remember the cover of PC gamer with a morrowwind skeleton the front. Half of it was triangles and the cover article was talking about how many mothafrickin polygons it had. State of the art, never before seen. A world first and step into the future of 3d open world gaming.

I enjoy morrowind though innever really finished it or got too deep. It was just a bit too hardcore for younger me. The 3d open world is really great though. While sparse it was made with love and care like the rest of the series.

I am in the middle of a thorough replay (I'm doing every dungeon in the game) after not touching the game for many many years ("it's too janky, it's too old, it hasn't aged well" etc). I am actually having a ton of fun and the jank doesn't bother me like I thought it would, having not really gotten into the game since playing the shit out of it when it was new.
Main takeaways about what you mentioned are:
1. there's more leveled lists than I remember, mostly creatures and monsters, and container loot. However, NPCs and in-world items are all 100% hand placed, and there's nothing like the ridiculousness of Oblivion.
2. The quality of the content varies wildly, and is inconsistent. There's a lot of areas that are fantastic, detailed, unique, full of hand-crafted attention to details. Many of these are connected to important quests and it shows, but there's also lots of obscure shit in the middle of nowhere that you'd have to go out of you way to find. Then there's a lot of shit that's just really generic/rushed seeming. I am particularly noticing this in the random little Sixth House bases that aren't connected to any quests, many of them are bare bones as frick. Lots of filler. I wonder if they were running out of time and money toward the end of the game and cutting stuff/stripping it down to get it done.

I am a jan-u-wine boomer millennial who grew up playing Morrowind and am currently enjoying a replay of it for the first time in many many years. If some kids who grew up playing Skyrim want to LARP like they love Morrowind, then A. It’s irrelevant to me and B. More power to them
