If you dont play fighting games MK is probably one of the easiest to get into, it is quite casual.

I wouldn't call it easy at all, as someone who started with MK9 and graduated to other games. Unintuitive block button, long blockstring pressure and mixups, zoning is super hard to deal with, long combos, awkward inputs. SF6 and Strive are both better picks if one actually wants to "get into" fighting games. MK is fun though, I like it, but in part I think it has contributed to the notion that fighting games are difficult to get into.

FYI the MK9 shit and the MKX 50/50 super speedy gameplay is a thing of the past.
MK1 looks more like MK11, well with air game now but the 50/50 game was phased out (but DLC chars had some) and the whole fast gameplay from 9 and X is gone.
Zoning is something you need to get used to in fighting games and MK zoning, it can be harder than say a SF shotos zoning but it is still mediocre.
Injustice zoning is on a next level shit though.
There is not really mix ups, just a low and overhead while blocking, blockstrings are real though as is chip.

And I think having a block button in the first place is still pretty dumb. It helps mitigate shit like teleports for example but having to press a button means it takes longer to get into a block state. Just moving your thumb or wrist very slightly means you'll more easily transition into a block state.

I liked MKX fast gameplay at the time but going back to it is a pain I actually really like MK11 and its gamepay especially krushing blows but after patches it has ruined what it used to be (I wont bore you with shit) so it is more fast paced but the game is not really built around it.
Hopefully MK1 meets a fine balance with not too fast not too slow gameplay.

The combo system is the thing I hate the most about nu-MK. Just totally canned string of inputs, mash it out as fast as you can, no timing at all. I'll never be able to enjoy these games until they change that system.

People literally want them to be palette swaps of the same design because that one design is so fricking cool you can reuse it ten times and people still want more of it.

There's beauty to character designs that follow the same base but are still capable of standing out from each other. I'm a big fan of how they use different clothing patterns to differentiate the ninjas, like Reptile's pattern resembling scales while Scorpion's resembles an exoskeleton. It's such a simple change but it works pretty well.

I tend to think the same thing. Boon has been in charge of every Mortal Kombat, and the costumes on the women only got skimpier as it went, until X.
My opinion is that when Warner Bros Interactive published MK9, they pretty much let Boon do what he wanted. Starting with X, though, they began to make their influence known as MK9 sold quite well and they wanted to hold bigger stake in it. The costumes weren't as revealing and the bodies, especially the breasts, were toned down.
By 11, you can really see the Warner Bros. influence: characters wearing full body armor suits and if there's any cleavage shown, the character's breasts were reduced significantly to protect against male gaze. Same shit that happened with DC Comics a few years back. The only one who escaped this to some extent in 11 was Sindel, but this is still a far cry from the older games. We are also seeing a reduction in character beauty, and that is hitting all time peaks of shit faces with MK1.
At this point, I wish Boon would quit the company and rejoin Tobias to create a new fighting game franchise that truly doesn't give a shit. But given how much Boon has put into Mortal Kombat, I can understand it'd be hard for him to leave his baby - even if it is getting mangled in front of him.

I don't think Ed really cares that much about the sexualization in MK games because it doesn't really matter for the overall product. The fact that they had three games that were hyper sexualized in the first place is probably enough for him. MK definitely draws inspiration from 90's comics but those aren't really popular anymore and by following trends MK has been able to maintain its status in pop culture.
I don't know about Sindel's case, yes she's a bit covered up but whatever skin is there, was A LOT more skill and attention put into. Her butt cheeks are plump, her breasts are big and are straight up veiny milf-tier. Subtle but high attention to detail.

it's like they're never satisfied with one action and have to take it further for gross-out reasons, but it's just silly and ruins what could otherwise be a good finisher.

That's the real catch with shapeshifters I'm afraid. The only way to pull it off would be either in-between models designed for the sole purpose of showing the shift happening, which would literally take only a couple frames, or individual limbs and body parts that could grow out and shrink into the human body which just sounds like a headache all for one character's animations.

mk newbie here, which is the best game in the series and why? I bought mk11 on sale and really enjoyed it. I might give 9 and 10 a play through soon; I was leaning more towards 10 first but if 9 is better I'll play that.
9 is only better in terms of historical homage and female design. There's a lot in MK9 that harkens back to the old trilogy, such as the story mode and the fact that everyone has the same air punches and kicks.
MK X looks better and gives players more options for playing the characters.
Since you've never played the old games, the only reason I can imagine you would want to play 9 is (1) the story mode which leads to X's story mode (but can be watched on YouTube), or (2) if you want to see the best representation of Mileena ever (Karen Strassman voice, sexpot psychopath, beautiful design).
