It being so big is what made it overrated. Being overrated is the attention the game gets outweighing how good the game is, and Pokemon Go is not a good enough game for that attention
It being popular and a global phenomenon doesn't mean you can't overrate the quality of it. You even say it was handled like shit. That's what a list like this is pointing out. The flaws were glossed over at the time because of hype, popularity or just poor reviewing methods.
The finale of Lost had insane viewership numbers but it wasn't overrated because of it, people actually acknowledged the flaws and called it out on it. Go, on the other hand, had a lot of review publications turning a blind eye to how mishandled and barebones it was and made it out to be the second coming of christ on hype and the whole "every kids dream come true" concept of it alone. It was overrated.
There was nothing wrong with the lost finale though.

Phantasy star 2, technically it was a 1990 release in NA but it was still released early 89 in nipland
Other games I remember playing back then and really liking were Commando, The OG Punch-out in 87, and Metal Gear in the same year.
Both good choices. I think there are plenty of good games made before 1990 that hold up today (as I say, I'd put at least one on my personal top ten), but I think it's a bit too restrictive considering how many good games there were in the 90's.

One of the game's big features was the dismemberment/crippling system, made even better by how you could precisely aim a melee swing to cripple or chop a limb off.

My favorite part about that game is how when you play it alone, it's a survival horror game. but when you play it with friends it instantly turns into this goofy ass chav sim where you run around and beat up old defenseless people(zombies) and rob them blind

GTA 3 was sort of like a beta to San Andreas. It defined the open world, city mission, wacky in between mission game design. And, the formula that Rockstar lazily repeated a dozen times afterwards. As well as fifty million other lame as frick companies.

It did the things that GTA 3 did, but far more of them, and in a solid "package" that San Andreas ended up being sold as under different titles and formats. GTA 3 didn't have flying vehicles, barely any water craft. Didn't have comprehensive melee. Stats. And, a bunch of the other shit that you see come up again, and again, and again in the GTA clones. In fact, GTA 3 is derivative of earlier and equally bland open world titles.

I liked the game but it's not the masterpiece journalists like to sell it as, although I'd argue ToTK is the more glaring ommission, since it's just an asset flip sequel which despite improving in some areas (bosses being the most notable of them imo) still carries over a lot of the previous entry's issues (such as copypasted content) and also somehow manages to make some things worse (the Fuse mechanic, worse menuing and the moronic story come to mind)

I could see it being a dark horse pick on a "most underrated games of all time list" just by sheer virtue of how much visceral hate it gets from everyone. It's become one of those games that's hip to hate on without even playing and hyped up as one of the worst things to ever exist. I think whoever put it on this list must have meant DMC3 and just put the wrong number because they'd never played a DMC game in their life and couldn't tell them apart. Or they meant DMC5 and thought it was DMC2 because they only know about DmC and DMC5

I think when it comes to being overrated, Persona 5 takes the cake over FFVII. For all the praise, the high review scores you don't really feel the love that it gets from its fans, compared to VII. The cast of VII easily beats P5s all day, everyday. Story, themes, music. The only thing that P5 does better is balance/game mechanics. But let's not pretend it's a big brained, hyper strategized gameplay. It's literally spamming enemy weakness and party attacks. The boss is a bit harder, but you'll just weave in buff/debuffs in between turns.
