MUGEN

Anyone remember this?
Any MUGEN memories? Do you still have your own MUGEN build? Curious if anyone still messes with it.
I have plenty of memories of trying to see who could defeat SSJ5 Broly or the Killer Whale, and downloading so many janky half-finished characters from so many sites that no longer exist.

why wasnt MUGEN used more as a game creation tool?

Good question, that shmup fighter looks fricking sick. I remember seeing neat things like rhythm minigames and stuff in it too. Kind of crazy how much stuff you can pull off with the engine.

        Damn, that's really cool.

simple, because back then, MUGEN's original TOS didnt allowed to make commercial games.

there were rumors that the developers were open to provide liscencing, and indeed they gave liscence to some dev who wanted to make a game, however that game never released and just like elecbyte themselves, they managed to fully dissapear from the face of the internet.

now, thanks to IKEMEN GO making commercial games is possible (look up The Black Heart in steam), and that is indeed inspiring people to make more full game projects than before.

I remember I got a DBZ Mugen when I was a kid from a CD that came from a gaming magazine.
It had a bunch of DBZ characters, it was quite fun to play with my brother.
Some characters were weird. Semi Perfect Cell for example couldn't fly and his ki blasts were terrible, but any of his melee attacks killed in one hit.
Vegeto had some way to transform into SSJ3 and just destroy the opponent automatically, but we never found out exactly how to do it.
Majin Vegeta had a screen-wide one hit kill with his self destruction.
It was a lot of fun

I'm curious if anyone else remembers this. There was a guy who made OCs from KoF characters that were pretty good. One of them was a black haired character named Cloud who used Ash sprite. Then the dude randomly had a b***hfit and deleted all the characters on his site. He had a bunch of cool sprite art as well

      >Im assuming we have some coolass 2023 super pack?
Would be cool if there is one, I'd be interested in messing with it again but I'm far too lazy to go scouring broken 15 year old links for rare characters and putting it together myself.

shame that they never went opensource, I would have enjoyed some xbox/ps2/dreamcast/psp ports.

Ikemen Go or whatever its called seems to be open source and its supports the files used for making mugen characters which means you can make characters for it using fighter factory and it also has online support apparently

On loverslab, there are two megapacks of mugen. Degenerate mugen, and Lapsus mugen.
They dont come with movelists though, so you have to figure stuff out on your own, or try to read the moveset files of each character.

Also, I forgot to add, not all characters are "compatible" with each other. Some animations only work with specific other characters, and you just have to experiment to find out.

I was really into modding it for porn for a while, then that one mod site nuked everything. Still have it on my PC though I haven't touched it in a few years at this point.

My strongest memory of mugen is how annoying it was to get characters, thanks to all the drama and collector-level possessiveness in that scene. Even torrent collections rarely had more than all the common shit everyone else had.
Maybe it's different now, but I'm long past caring anymore.

dude decided to retire from making mugen stuff because he actually believes he will go to hell.

there was also another dev who not only decided to retire, but also delete all his stuff from the net. so yeah, some mugeh devs do have serious problems
