It's not a zoomer thing. Korean MMOs and WoW popularized these numbers-go-up mechanics. Those games were huge in the early 00s. Other devs realized how addictive it is so they started putting in their games too. It is in fact so effective that the korean government had to step in and limit playtime in mmos, and the chinese created rehab camps for mmo addicts.
It taps into a primal part of your brain that makes you want to get up and go to work (hunting and gathering). It feels good to see number go up. It tricks your brain into thinking that you're accumulating wealth.

So there's this game on Steam that's been in early access for an eternity and there's just no way it's going to ever succeed because they devs are straight up fricking moronic. It's a game about space ships blowing each other up, and you can play fighters as well as entire battleships. And you know what would make totally sense, if the fighters are Free 2 gay, while you'd have to pay for playing bigger ships. This model would keep the game alive so long as fighters are super fricking fun game mode. The playerbase has been asking the devs for this for 5+ years and they still won't do it. See I'm not even going to remember what the game's name is, because it's pointless. It will be dead on arrival, doesn't matter how much fun it could have been.
