Are there any good musket based strategy games? Preferably something that can be played in single player.

cossacks 2
AOE3
Great game. I been playing the definitive edition lately and the multiplayer chat is so cucked. Can't even say Jap without being censored.
Napoleon is fun, just a bit low on content, get it on sale and install a soundmod.
gee idk
>Native American Calvary and archers…
>fighting fricking Sweden
Cringe meme bloatmod
?? vanilla game has recruitable natives in the new world, this was a fight over newfoundland. 2 40-unit stacks of swedes vs. 3 of the english, first battle where i spent all my ammo and got overrun as such. was like a ww1 battle. darthmod.
Cossacks series
American Conquest and its expansion
Are you saying you are forbidden from bringing Sweden to tne American theatre, because... what, exactly?
t. conquered Great Plains and Mexico as Maratha
here's a battle i fought after making vanilla 40 unit save as great britain, got the UI.template file for smaller unit icons from the recent upload of ETW2 at mod db. ETW2, darthmod, vanilla, empire is the shit.
That's a kino screenshot
Is that with mods? I tried playing Empire but its a slog fest with braindead ai.
those muskets have stupid range. must be darthmod
they are just patching their shots? calm down
Next to a battle lost, the saddest thing is a battle won.
Questions? Comments? Concerns??
Uh, what game is this?
Total war empire
How can your economy afford this? Or does Darthmod make army maintenance irrelevant?
OP is Sweden, not GB

my favorite screenshot if not for the fricking soldiers in the center clipped into each other looking like goro and sheeva in a gunfight

Shogun
Imperial Glory
Cossacks/American Conquest
Empire Earth/Empires: Dawn of the modern world/Rise of Nations if you restrict yourself to the relevant ages.
Mount and Blade: With Fire and Sword might be good, idunno.
>Shogun
why include shogun and not medieval? both are playable in uhd now and recordable through desktop capture (not game capture in obs but maybe other program). i also patched it to 4gb and it runs very smoothly
Cuz Medival has Handgons, not muskets.
Nah, I have only played the demo of Med1, so I know next to nothing about it. When I wrote Shogun, I actually thought of Shogun 2. Empire sucks and isn't worth playing
But if OP accepts Handgons, then AoE2 should also count.
it has arquebuise which are the first modern infantry weapon, same as shogun, also it has long range artillery
Pretty sure russians and southern europe have literal musketeers, but it's almost impossible to play the game by centering your armies around massed musket fire like in Empire, Napoopan, and Shogun/2 so it doesn't count.
>Cuz Medival has Handgons, not muskets.
well
there is mod with muskets
>why include shogun and not medieval
Because OP asked for Musket era games.
>inb4 handgonnes
Are you illiterate or ESL?
i think youve lost track of who (you) are replying to guy
shogun doesnt even have artillery, medieval lets you create the same early-modern armies used by maurice and gustavus, what the frick is your problem?
>medieval lets you create the same early-modern armies used by maurice and gustavus
Nice head-canon. Or just addiction to wiener-slurping and 30 years war mod?
scourge of war
hist war napoleon
There's that one Chinese FE-clone.
Name is Banner of the Maid, ported everywhere. The English translation is wonky due to it being done in-house by the devs, but passable. As mentioned it's a clone of those weapon-triangle Fire Emblem games, so it plays like a big game of RPS.
Scourge of War
GT Civil War
Gran Turismo Civil War?
there are not many musket games it seems

Mount and Blade Napoleonic Wars expansion but I believe it's only multiplayer(?) The online commander battles are quite fun when you get 20 players on a server and there is generally good teamwork and community.
Is it still alive? I used to be in a regiment but it turned into an arma3 clan. I've also seen a bunch of games come out that are basically graphically updated rip offs of Napoleonic wars. Biggest one I think is holdfast, which has napoleonic game modes and WW1 game modes. It's alright but I haven't tried playing in a line battle.
not really. about a decade ago, i was one of the leaders of a regiment in one of the big events that would happen twice a week (i think it was tuesday and friday), hosted by the 57e.
on that note, discord is nice since its free, but it really misses some of the fine details that teamspeak had. for example, you could hold a key and voice to a group of very specific people at the same time, even if they weren't in the same channel as you. this works great when you are trying to coordinate a bunch of regiments at once.
i think those events fell off after 2014-2015, and i havent really spoke to the people from those days since. i tried to start playing games with our old regiment leader two different times, but he blew me off with excuses, so i stopped initiating contact with him. all the people i knew from back then other than my irl buddies who i got into my regiment all just fell off within the next 2-3 years after the events stopped. i dont really know what any of those guys are up to nowadays. i wish i did because i miss some of them
to clarify, i was not in the 57e. our regiment was one of the ones in their "coalition," aka we worked with them and helped them with their events in exchange for free use of an area in their teamspeak. we also got to use their event server sometimes for trainings
I was in 1st EPI but I don't the remember the specifics about how the games were organized. Could have been playing with or against each other for all I know. It was a good time while it lasted. Probably the last organized multiplayer group I've played in and it was a great time. I eventually was just unable to make the games because of work and school and dropped out. Went back to play a few times, but one of the last times I showed up I only knew like 15 percent of the people in it. Teamspeak was nice, I don't remember us ever having a problem with it. The memories of it make me want to try and get into some kind of organized multiplayer group again. I haven't done anything like that for years.
ive tried a few times over the years to find an organized multiplayer group that felt like what me and you both experienced previously, but i havent really found a group that suits me. im not joking when i say that homosexuals, trannies, and simps (the kind of simp who thinks its a good idea to try and get his "girlfriend" or "female friend" into the group. he also bought her the game and all dlcs, go figure) ruin the mood in about every present multiplayer group ive encountered. i just want a group of guys to bullshit around with without having to worry about walking on eggshells with almost every piece of banter that comes out of my mouth
Mount and blade community was autistic enough that it wasn't really a problem. We had a couple squeakers, but their voice was the worst part. Personality wise they were fine.
But I guess I should also mention that this was about 10 years ago so the overall gaming community was definitely very different. Only MP game I play regularly now is hell let loose and the community in that is pretty decent. It definitely feels like playing a game from a decade ago vs playing something like overwatch where the community is total cancer. I tend not to bother interacting with people in MP games anymore but I do occasionally find a game with a nice community. Mordhau was pretty cool for a bit. I think it became shit though.
i tried hell let loose when the early access first released in 2018, but i really didnt like where the game was going after the first 2-3 months, so i dropped it and havent really touched it since.
its only going to be harder to find these kinds of people as time goes on. way too many homosexual pedo enablers in communities nowadays who will scream for you to be banned if you speak out against them
>but i really didnt like where the game was going after the first 2-3 months
It's better or worse in waves. I've had way more fun games with good squadmates in the last few months of playing than I was having a year ago. Occasionally though you get a frick ton of new players who don't communicate and are all around shit at the game. I've yet to play a server where the "squad leaders must have mics" rule has actually been enforced, unless they're talking in command chat and ignoring their squad.
what really bothered me was when they took away the option for squad leaders to build garrisons slightly deep in enemy territory. that alone killed almost my entire drive to play because they punished squad leaders for not being moronic. i dont care to go back to the game because im sure they have casualized it worse as time has progressed since
afaik you can currently build garrisons one sector deep in enemy territory. Costs double the supplies to do that but it's only one supply drop or two supply units. Not sure if it was a reverted change or if you meant even deeper than that.
used to be 2 deep
also it had the same cost as regular so you were actually rewarded for pulling off big flanks rather than having any maneuver be punished by the devs
this is a prime example of what i meant by them casualizing the game to the point of unplayability. it wasnt a problem at all but hyper casuals couldnt adapt
>1 sector less
>still have airheads and half tracks
>don't have instant enemy garrisons at the next point before your moron team dies or pulls back
I really don't see a problem with it.
why punish squad leaders who are actually capable of setting up forward garrisons?
It's not that difficult to do, unless your team is absolutely braindead and unable to cooperate. Two sectors behind enemy lines you are going to run into few enemies. All it does is negate some of the defenders advantages and spread the fighting even thinner on the large maps. I'd agree with you if they doubled the match sizes, but not as it is now.
also if you are letting an enemy team set up a garrison 2 sectors deep in your territory, it means theres a major blind spot in your line that someone should be watching. casuals dont want to adjust for that so they complained about being punished for their laziness and negligence until the devs catered to them. i wont be going back to arcade let loose to tard wrangle my squad or team into winning, so dont bother trying to convince me.
ultimate general civil wars pretty fun and can be modded. their next game with the rev war seems like a dream but it looks like its stuck in dev hell
>can be modded
This is a fricking lie. The only way to mod is to hex edit data files.
American Conquest Fight Back + the Hawks European Warfare mod (HEW) - Napoleonic wars multiplayer mod.
American Conquest Divided Nations + the Hawks Divided Nations (HDN) multiplayer mod. American Civil war.
hows the multiplayer scene?
3-4 players typically. we play battles on most days of the week (but usually more on weekends.
>American Conquest Divided Nations + the Hawks Divided Nations (HDN) multiplayer mod. American Civil war.
>Actually telling anyone to play DN, the game so borked, it requires a specific crack just to not frick your OS over.
telling anyone to play DN, the game so borked
I said to play the game modded
>requires a specific crack just to not frick your OS over
never ever heard of ACDN borking someone's OS, ever.
Nta, but Divided Nation uses StarForce (one of the early adapters, too). StarForce has no fricking idea what any system more recent than XP is and will frick your system sideways, especially if it's 64bit.
I got an urge to revisit Divided Nation a while ago. As a result, I've spend entire weekend unfricking my PC and didn't play the game at all. And mods won't fix it, since it's completely unrelated to the game itself - it's the security it comes with.
did you download a crack from some random website, or did you download the pre-installed copy of ACDN from the Chinese website? many people downloaded the latter and never had any issues with it.
I think you aren't really reading the posts you are replying to, just throwing around semi-related stuff for no real reason or connection with the discussion.
I used my own legal copy of that game. Cue the irony.
I'm reading your post and trying to figure out what went wrong with your PC because in 14 years of playing the games and their mods and sharing them i've never heard of someone getting their OS bricked by any of the games, though I'm aware the games have problems running on any OS past Win XP (this is fixed with the recent GL wrapper on Win 10, and on Win 7 they run if you disable explorer.exe before running).
>legal copy
this must be the reason, then. If you want to play the AC games get them from here
http://www.americanconquest.info/
Mate, I eventually did run just a pirate copy, the cracked one, obviously. My point is entirely that the other anon is right: trying to get this game running requires extra care to make sure you are using the right copy with the right crack, or you get fricked. Dunno, never had problems with StarForce, ever, even back in the era when it was recent?
In fact, the reason why bunch of games from early-to-mid 00s are nearly impossible to run and aren't readily in retail on various online platforms is that they had StarForce. King King, one of the better tie-in games ever made and really solid action-adventure horror hybrid, took forever to unfrick, just because it too used StarForce
>you know that spinoff of a game about European warfare that focuses on American warfare? let's make a mod for it that focuses on European Warfare
Considering Cossacks 2 was pretty lackluster and very limited, while Cossacks 3 is just a shitty remake of the original, do you really blame people for using the perfect balance of autism and still accessible gameplay of AC?
This is something that always bugged me about both C2 and C3: they completely ignore mechanics from AC. C2, I can forget, it is an original game that does something new, an experiment. But C3 was heavily marketed as reinventing Cossacks, the original ones, and it's just a shitty reskin, to the point they even ported bugs 1:1 in the release state of the game
>Cossacks 2 was pretty lackluster and very limited
Cossacks 2 would have been a pretty great game if it weren't for the bugs and weak AI. I much preferred conquering autonomous villages that than build up their own militias to whatever we have now. Also these villages had supply lines that could be cut.
The artwork for the game was quite good and it had 60fps sprites that for some reason only activated when you save-quit-reloaded the entire game.
I'd enjoy it if Total War would implement a skirmish mode with Cossacks 2 ressource system and basebuilding.
Scourge of War
Very grognard. This is with the KS mod.
I'm personally very fond of Pike and Shot if you'd prefer a turn based tabletop wargame kind of feel.
all of their games are great
Sneedgoku is an underrated gem
Yes it is. It's my favorite of the bunch for sure.
theyre all either play like a skirmish or look really ugly. grand tactician looks ok until it zooms into that ugly 3d view looking like its from a PS1. scourge of war looks real sloppy and choppy. over 200 years after waterloo and we dont have any nice games.
This thread sparked my desire to play Empire TW again.
But I'd like to try some mods instead of vanilla.
Any recommendations?
Empire Total War II, perhaps.

rights of man with durango portraits and graphics enhancements
its improves ai without adding 300 different line infantry types (removes shit like amazons and adds flavor to line infantry so in hungary or ceylon you will recruit different kind of line infantry such as marines), also makes money much harder to come upon so armies never bulge up (i personally like being forced to plan where i need to concentrate my units and not just have full stack on every front)
>rights of man
I looked into it, it looks like it only changes what affects AI, rather than actually fixing the braindead logic of AI. Or am I wrong?
i dont think you can really fix ai that much, empire is really unmoddable and ca has said that
shogun 2 fall of the samurai is kinda fun.
Gotta love how shitty quality of the gif makes it look like some early 90s B-movie.
The only good one is Ultimate General. All of the rest are either too unrealistic (AoE3, TW, Cossacks) or too autismo realistic (Pike and Shot)
I say this as a man who has based his entire personality around muskets.
>not grand tactician
Empire: Total War
Fall of the Samurai, no contest
>Fire by rank is almost at the bottom of the tech tree
Fricking why?! It should be literally one of the first techs
not to mention that Nobunaga's historicall success of gun units was mostly thanks to, well, his fire by rank tactics.
FotS is literally forcing people to reinvent the wheel.
I've never heard that before.
As far as I know people mostly just used kneel fire at best at that point
Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai satisfies my musket autism enough.

It's the same game as CK2. They just 'streamlined' it so all the stuff that fooled you into thinking this spreadsheet was a real game is either gone or so transparent that now even you can see through it. All PDX 'grand strategy' games are actually like this. There are no 'ideas under the hood', just vague notions of role-playing and 'balance', but no sense of purpose or even 'playing' for fun for its own sake
... you sure you shouldn't be in a different thread?
The picture with the Cossack cavalry made this song play in my head.
I wish more games had playable Cossacks. It's one of the biggest reasons I'd have liked a 17th century Total War game for right before Empire.
Anon I was listening to that song all throughout the battle, and actually on loop for hours. Are our minds connected?
Here you have more Cossack kino.
>I wish more games had playable Cossacks.
Agreed.
>It's one of the biggest reasons I'd have liked a 17th century Total War game for right before Empire.
Same. I installed ETW again and the ETW II mod just to enjoy Zaporozhia, pic related.
i hate hell let loose. its bullshit getting shot by bushes
I dunno, bushes were active combatants in WW2. Both Axis and Allied solders painstakingly trained them to be able to use guns after a thorough selection process of the perfect sized and shaped bush. I think its important to recognize this often underlooked part of the war because if you ever tried to even talk to a bush, you will realize just how hard it is to train them to do anything.
The John Tiller games have Civil War, Napoleon, Seven Years War, and the early American Wars.
