In the Spaceworld demo the region has snowy, egyptian-themed and desert routes like in picrel. Yet in the final game the region is hollow and has no identity outside of Ecruteak.
>every region should be an identity-less mix-match of random themes and biomes like muh unova/kalos/alola/galar/paldea!!!
frick off
>the region is hollow and has no identity outside of Ecruteak
you're a moron. johto has the MOST identity out of all the regions because it hones in on the whole "small rural region that is struggling to adapt to the modern world" identity. you just want every region to be nothing more than a soulless theme park that changes theme every 5 steps to fuel your fried dopamine receptors.
oh, and the beta map was fricking garbage. betagays are absolutely insufferable.
I don't think those represent Johto, but somewhere else in Japan.
>Yet in the final game the region is hollow and has no identity outside of Ecruteak.
You didn't even play the fricking game lmao
Not every single area has to SCREAM "I'M ON BRAND" to make a great and believable world to get lost inside
people who hate the Johto region rushed through it
>eats up cart space/development time that could've been spent fleshing out Johto
>routes and cities downsized almost to the point of parody, some caves and other dungeons outright removed
>almost no story or events, level curve even worse than Johto
>some Johto Pokemon only appear in Kanto
>erulean cave was going to be in the game
>seafoam islands was going to be in the game as a proper dungeon and not a single room
>cinnabar islands was going to have it's gen 1 layout meaning blaine would have had a proper gym and pokemon mansion would have been accessible
>pokemon tower might have been an actual dungeon still
>power plant might have still been a proper dungeon
>they opt not to do any of this in the final game
>rock tunnel was supposed to be blocked off but they kept it even though it's the most bland dungeon in the game
This has nothing to do with Kanto. Leave Kanto as is. Stop hijacking my thread and trying to turn it into a shitflinging genwar.
Kanto is the foundation of Johto. You can't make Johto better without making Kanto better.
JWNBARR
Johto Will Never Be A Real Region
My idea?
Just make it better. Tighter.
Then port it to PC and update the combat mechanics a bit so you can play on 1v1 leaderboards without moronic balancing.
>update the combat mechanics a bit so you can play on 1v1 leaderboards without moronic balancing.
in what ways specifically? this isn't to be antagonistic, people often make vague prescriptions but imo all the interesting bits are the particulars. how do you envision compelling and fun battles?
Like speeding it up slighty, especially the moronic hp bars falling slowly,
maybe fixing some of the visual glitches
better UI for the inventory (at least relevant for the single player porition)
maybe some extra information on the moves
abilities, weather, other conditions,
just pick a little bit from the newer gens and so on
Scizor and Bellosom should have been their own Pokemon line.
Nidoran M/F should have been combined into one Pokemon with branch evolutions.
>DUDE JUST ADD CONNECTING ROUTES EVERYWHERE THAT ADD NOTHING TO THE GAME
FRICK OFF
I get your frustration, but that dude/image always gets spammed in these types of threads. don't feed the trolls
There's only 2 tho? Route 50 at the bottom indeed sounds ass, but the connection between Goldenrod and Whirl Islands made sense, I saw it in a Crystal hackrom and it expanded the lore and liveliness of the region (eg why wouldn't Goldenrod have a port/bay?), so suck it
>DUDE JUST ADD CONNECTING ROUTES EVERYWHERE THAT ADD NOTHING TO THE GAME
>FRICK OFF
Why settle for the bare minimum? Pokemon games acquire more soul with more exploration.
scisor seems fine to go along with onyx, but bellosom imo has some similarities with the tiny fairy legendaries like celebi and jirachi
Autism looks so funny, wish I had it sometimes so I could produce stuff like this.
Nice ideas
Why would Osaka/Kansai need egypt-themed stuff? Snow might make sense for Mahogany town and some of the mountains but Johto already has identity.
Johto already seems already trend toward having connecting routes.
frick off
>Johto already seems already trend toward having connecting routes.
No it doesn't? The only one is Route 36/37, and that is the ONLY one, and it actually serves a gameplay purpose.
All the shit that ROM hackers add in make no sense. Like the classic Cherrygrove to Route 32 one. Why? What does it add? Wow I can fly back to Cherrygrove City and surf to a route I've already explored. Oh yes, it was so worth wading through all these Tentacools for this X Defend.
Or the Goldenrod to Route 41 one. Once again, it serves no purpose and was just added because the creator was bored.
ROM hackers/fangame creators wouldn't know good game design if it hit them in the head at 200 KPH.
>nonlinearity
what the frick are you on about
Are you moronic? After Morty you can do Chuck, Jasmine and Pryce, and most of the story events in-between, in any order you want.
I played the game like 40 times as a kid Jasmine says she can't fight until the ampharos is healed so you go fight Chuck and then come back to fight Jasmine why the frick else would the game send you to cianwood otherwise
But you still have the option to do Jasmine before Chuck.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
why the frick would i want to surf all the way back to olivine
Why the frick would you ever want to do anything optional?
Games should be completely linear so you don't even have to consider the option of doing something other than the expected.
You might not want to, but the option is still there.
Why would you want to surf all the way to Cinnabar and do Blaine before Erika?
Why would you want to skip Maylene and go all the way to Pastoria and do Crasher Wake first?
Why would you want to run past Cortondo and climb Alfornada and do Tulip first?
before engaging, what other games do you enjoy? many fan edits are by people with very little experience outside of pokemon, and certainly even less irl which severely limits their capacity
OP here, I don't play any other games other than Pokémon, and even then I only replay Gens I - IV. I have only played each game in Gens V - IX one time each.
I have studied Johto's game design extensively, read interviews, and like to spend my free time looking at the source code of Pokémon Crystal. I am fascinated by the Johto games and absolutely adore them, so I think it's safe to say I am the authority on them. I day-dream constantly about directing the next Johto remakes and everything I would include in them, and I dread what modern day GAME FREAK would do to my beloved games.
I kneel.
This is what actual autism looks like.
And not the bad kind. This is the kind of autism this shithole needs more of.
fukxing zased
>and like to spend my free time looking at the source code of Pokémon Crystal
are you a programmer? that shit's in assembly and spread across a million files
i doubt a regular fan can read that shit. did you learn assembly just for this?
Holy based
I'm the same way but for Hoenn, I'm glad to see a fellow game design autist.
Glad to see other people interested in game design here as an aspiring game designer myself; personally, I'd probably connect Route 40/41 to Goldenrod, like in the betas, just to make the locations loop into one another more.
I always felt like Johto and Sinnoh had the same spirit. I say do what Sinnoh did right.
Add Sinnoh as an additional region. Also Hoeen.
I always hoped for a pokemon game where you can visit all the regions
Please don't let my thread die. I spent way too much time on this.
So sad
don't worry, people will probably repost your ideas in a mocking and insincere manner
I liked the beta map, outside of the weird, atrophied, barely recognizable Kanto.
It's weird to me how unpopular mini-Kanto is because I genuinely wish GS had kept the beta map for exactly this reason. It's the perfect amount of nostalgia available without unbalancing the game with its gravity.
>It's weird to me how unpopular mini-Kanto i
That's because Kanto is uninteresting as a region without the dungeons. The only reason people liked returning there in GSC because Johto provided enough of an experience on its own for getting more game on top was that was a fun bonus (two cakes!"). Reminder that Johto alone was too content dense to fit onto the cartridge, without Iwata's help. People were too busy marveling at the sheer amount of content GSC had to question they didn't use the extra space for take Johto bigger. Even though in hindsight, having Johto be bigger would have been better
>The complaint about "Kanto being butchered" go way if Kanto isn't in the game at all (never mind that the reason they areas that were removed were either related to RBYs plot or the Gen1 legendaries so would serve no purpose if Game Freak tried to force them ito GSC
>The whole Johto Pokémon not found in Johto complaint goes way since Johto would be the only region
>the level curve would be
>Johto would have its own league
>Johto wouldn't have been robbed of routes 26, 27, and 28, all of which are new routes made for GSC and would have been considered Johto if Johto was the only region in the game,
>Johto would have been the biggest region if all the content in GSC were considerd Johto
>Malie Garden would be a real Johto tribute instead of it being an KANTO west what the frick does Nugget Bridge have do with Johto?
>Jotho starter would would gotten special snowflake super saiyan forms like KANTO and Hoeen did
well kanto is part of tokyo so it makes sense if the idea was to represent real life japan. Keeping kanto as it was portrayed makes the worldbuilding stronger though.
Op, one of my pet peeves about johto is the ruins of alph puzzle being all buildup with no payoff since you have ruins that are thousands years old, messages left for future generations about some sort of catastrophe or migration (Our words shall remain here for the ages ; Thus we shall erect a Pokémon statue outside ; They possess great insight and refuse the outside world ; We humans must learn to walk in harmony with them. We depart for their sakes), a legendary pokemon that was alive at the time the ruins were made and has to be caught in order to see the final message (Ho-oh), and a region specific mythical pokemon that just happens to have time travelling powers (Celebi).
All of the above practically begs for the game to end with the player going back in time and witness the history that made johto what it is, maybe even prevent some kind of past injustice.
I wish the rewards for the Ruins of Alph puzzles were better than a bitter herbs and different Unown shapes. Should've given you each of the fossils for their respective puzzle
it was slightly better in crystal you could get moon stones and stuff like that
Don't you still have to talk to Jasmine first to get the secretpotion in Cianwood?
What kinds of Pokemon will we be able to find on these new routes, OP? You mention most of Route 39's Pokemon + Poliwag in Route 49, and Geodude dominating the wildlife in route 50, but what else did you have in mind? I'd like to see more pokemon that aren't normally available this early such as Teddiursa/Phanpy/Murkow, but maybe you have something else in mind.
I think that’s neat. I’ve debated the idea of fleshing out the rest of Shikoku (island with Cianwood) because it seems rural and reasonably small. Could be a decent place to put some of the Johto mon in need of better distribution. Could also be a great spot to sprinkle a few Hoenn mon and that make sense (Wingull, for example).
Johto will always be the best region.
Just add some more surf routes to better connect the region. It doesn't need much else than that.
No, it doesn't need any more of that you FRICKING moron.
NTA but it seems you’ve got a touch of the tism
No, it's just that you're all too low IQ to understand my thought processes.
Your process consists of you being an autist that screams at people lol
Johtoddlers, everyone.
Just make Johto a Hoeen prequel in terms of water routes.
I like the thoughts anon. Expand my home region
OP here again, I'm going to attempt to insert my ideas into my personal hack of Pokémon Crystal to see how well it works, as well as write a new music track for the town based off Himeji. I have already succesfully inserted Route 47 and 48.
After that, I will attempt the same for HGSS.
Maybe some images?
you should do a route music with a rendition of this
ff9 has really comfy music that would fit well in a pokemon game.
>wasting Final Fantasy music on Pokémon
OP, I honestly like this idea. Another city and set of routes would be cool, and it doesn't detract from the natural progression of the story and routes, just offers another place to go that connects back naturally.
You could easily surf to Cyanwood first and go the other way. Making Chuck unavailable until you go do the rocket story in the new city feels like a departure from the original a bit too much.
Making it purely optional is the alternative or just making you go to do the team rocket shit. I will say it had better be worth going all this way for it. A new city is a cool idea, but what would be nice is if the mountain paths offered some exploration and weren't just hallways.
That would really seal the deal
great idea OP. any lore about this new city / the castle?
>great idea OP
>i honestly like it OP
>wow OP
samegay
thanks for bumping the thread
What about the cities themselves? I know they are supposed to be somewhat rural, but they could be represented with far more buildings than the ones portrayed in the game itself.
Add a route or cave area that links route 45, route 46, or the dark cave to an dead area in or near Mt. Silver so the player can get early access to mons like Larvitar.
I was no shit just wondering if there was a hack like this. My mind is blown.
EXPAND JOHTO! ADD JOHTO STYLE ISLANDS!
INCLUDE CRYSTAL LORE! MAKE THE BEST GAME EVER!
>Alph ruins found in a hidden cavern in dragons den, Cliff Cave (with another sliding block puzzle), and Union Cave.
>Add populated beach sections to Cherrygrove, Azaela and New Bark.
>A connection between Mt Mortar and Lake of Rage
>add a connection between lake of Rage and Ice path but the section of ice path is isolated from the rest of the dungeon
>New post game connect between Ice tunnel and Mt Silver that jointly leads to the Sinjoh Mountains and the Sinjoh Valley. The ice path route is available as soon as you beat Lance but you will be partially guided to it when you enter Mt Silver, at which point you will be closer to level appropriate for Sinjoh
>Sinjoh Valley is kind of like Shangri la, full of Rare, high leveled pokemon as well as many Sinnohdex pokemon that cant be found in Kanto or Johto.
>Sinjoh Mountains would be Johto's Twist Mountain ripoff with a sliding block puzzle at the end. Solving the puzzle opens the path but also triggers a battle with a max EV/IV level 70 unown that will always have a hidden power SE to your lead pokemon (assuming old hidden power rules are in place) because I think it would be kind of funny
>Convert Olivine Beach, the Lighthouse and Battle Frontier into a single expansive boardwalk area with the frontier battles and Contests recontextualized as entertainment events (mechanically the same)
>Add a forest to the National Park, move the bug catching contest in there.
I feel like it would be cool to give the magnet train some additional stops where you can battle some bored trainers waiting for a ride on its route as well as a connection to cianwood but also fairly pointless and crowding, so its an idea but not really one I think I would go ahead with.
HIMEJI
SO COOL
Add Houndour and other late gen 2 mons to Johto routes so I can actually utilize them for once. I would autistically search Dark Cave for an early game Larvitar with a 0.1% spawn rate, and it's criminal that Murkrow and Houndour are only found in bumfrick nowhere Kanto.
Why isn't Houndour in Burned Tower? Why is Murkrow, the region bird, nowhere, when it could be in the National Park/outside Ecruteak at night? I'd even make a case for low spawn rate Larvitar in Dragon's Den, since it's a kaiju pseud.
I'd also say (obviously) fix the lack of level scaling through the game. Yes, you can visit towns out of order, but there's a clear order you are intended to follow. Trying to grind lv 27 Girafarigs is hell.
Also, add back in the Safari Zone and other missing areas from gen 1.
Here OP I fixed Johto for you.
Gen 2 if it was Gen 3
I too think this Johto is ahead of its time.
Fricking is the least moronic thing ever, so thank you bro. 😀
see
What do the amazing locations of the Ocean of Rage and Nagashima connect to? I thought so. Learn to see.
moron
this is moronic as frick
unironically, turn all the empty space into exploreable space, put pokemon there, natural dungeons, have random side quests for items that aren't needed.
The main routes should guide you and inbetween passages can be blocked by HM requirements
This was a really great thread, OP. I think anyone who disagrees was just a homosexual unfortunately.
so Johto SOVL thread?
I wanna replay crystal and use some mons I never have before and try to tough it out with some real turds
I'm thinking togetic and ledian for starters, any other recommendations? They don't necessarily have to be garbage pokemon, can just be ones you like that are less used.
ledian is unironically good in a gen 2 run with ele/ice punch and dual screens
I would recommend dunsparce, but you have too many normal types on that run already. Sunkern/Sunflora is a challenge because the former has absolute crap bst while you need to win the bug catching contest to be able to evolve it.
Quilfish are not that common in playthroughs probably because they only show up mid way, but might be cool.
Crystal also gives has sneasel on the ice path so you either can try that or meme delibird into ending red's team.
