yeah it's pretty shit especially following the original paper mario which was a really novel concept. but it's on the gamecube aka the console most people on the internet right now grew up with so obviously people have to claim it's an all time classic.
The beauty of the first two games is that they are highly accessible without being braindead or boring. I get that you’re calling the battle system “boring”, but I don’t know what you’re looking for that isn’t there. It’s an entry level JRPG with action commands that keep you from checking out. Figuring out the stylish commands in TTYD is a slightly deeper layer that I thought had a lot of charm.

This was a 10/10 game that the higher ups at Nintendo decided to force into being a 6/10 game because of moronic restrictions on the devs. The music and visuals are legimitaly the best of any game on the switch. A lot of the gameplay is really fun too. But the awful battle system, the lack of original characters, the generic world designs (with a few exceptions) just hold it back so hard. The battle system in particular is seriously bad. And it's so frustrating because RPG battles are a solved problem. You don't need to reinvent that wheel. Let the player choose an attack from a menu...and use that attack.

I agree that it was censorship in the original game. But I don't really think Nintendo is worried about Christian soccer moms in 2024 for a niche title on a console that mostly sold to adults. This is particularly the case for the European regions, where they changed it too. I think there's a high chance that whoever is handling the script for this game looked at Vivian being a boy and said "why is this even here?" Because if you have a character trait that adds nothing to the character or the story...why have it?
The most obvious reason is they're going to preserve it because frick rewriting the scrip and frick dealing with that can of worms. The likely mentality is that it's a remake, they do things like it was in the original, simple as.

This applies to pretty much almost everything that gives charm and character to the game. For instance Bobbery's backstory with his wife. It's a cheesy piece of dialogue that only serves as a glorified justification to turn a simple interaction into a character trait that doesn't come up ever again.
In your brain you probably cannot fathom anyone ever daring to touch this profound moment of characterization because, despite it having absolutely no bearing to the story it's part of what gives soul to the game.
If you want to have this argument in good faith about censorship and respecting the writer's original creative vision in the future, and you must treat the whole game with integrity. Even if it means accepting parts of it that you disagree with. Otherwise you'd be a "rules for thee but not for me" kinda hypocrite, the type that won't get taken seriously.
Bobber's backstory with his wife is important for several reasons, but particularly for establishing his character. It tells you many different things about this guy and makes you empathize with him. Indeed, killing the character's wife is a very cheap but effective way to provoke empathy.
What does Vivian having a penis add to the story? It's just fetish fuel and a setup for a couple lame, cliched jokes. And as far as the jokes go, they only really work in Japan where the sense of humor is different. They have this sort of reaction based humor, so the way it's setup is he says "I'm a shadow sister" and her sister goes "actually you're just a man!" and the Japanese audience starts laughing their asses off (very quietly because laughing loudly would be rude!). In English, or any western language, that joke doesn't land at all.

However by meeting Mario she realizes that ~the way she was born and the role she's assigned by others doesn't define her~, and that in reality she's ~free to behave in any way she wants~

That's not her character at all. I feel like either you've never played the game or it's just been a long time and you've forgotten. Her character is that she's a nice girl who's bullied by her wicked older sister. It's a cinderella reference. She's the generic shy girl (boy in Japanese) who joins with the nice guy main character and falls in love with him because he was nice to her, like in a thousand different anime series. I'd say she's probably the worst partner in the game in terms of writing, although she's obviously popular due to her interesting visual design and general usefulness in gameplay.

Yes, my dude, and why is she bullied? Because she is not wicked, she's charming hero assigned the role of a Villain, a role she cannot play because it's not in her nature. Her sisters expect her to be competent, strong, and wicked whereas she's clumsy, weak, and kind.
This is the exact same situation a homosexual lives in his everyday life, they're dudes who are born men but it's in their nature to behave like little girls to dubious results. That's why they made Vivian a trap and as far as actual literally analysis go this is a pretty damn smart use of character thematics.

Sticker Star was awful and Color Splash was mediocre but those two games existing shouldn’t mean Paper Mario got ruined. That’s like saying 2D Mario got raped cause of the NSMB games when we got Wonder which brought back hype to the series.

I think it doesn't feel like there was a big gap in 2D games because 3D Land and World are very very similar to 2D Mario games and solid. And there was Mario Maker too.
Dead Rising, Assassin's Creed, Final Fantasy, Guilty Gear, every IP owned by Blizzard or Ubisoft, and on a related note the Mario & Luigi RPG games are essentially in the exact same spot as Paper Mario.
Paper Mario 64 has a few advantages over TTYD, mostly in the level structuring being more open and varied instead of straight lines, but TTYD has the better characters, world and story and this is an RPG. There's a reason they remade TTYD first.

The reason why TTYD got a remake instead of the first game is because they've been rereleasing PM64 since the Wii. I doubt PM64 will get a remake after TTYD because it doesn't need it. I can see them going for Super Paper Mario next, but as an HD remaster
64 is 100% getting a remake. Firstly because fricking RPG got one and secondly because they would be stupid not to. They can reuse a ton of assets and the new lighting system. They could probably make a 64 remake with a small team in 2 years and it's guaranteed to sell at least 3m.
Imagine if they remade super into an actual rpg instead, redid the art direction and just imported ttyd's battle system, I would kneel so fricking hard. Ideally we'd just get a new game in the style of the first two but I don't trust Nintendo to be able to do anything interesting anymore

It would take too much work to justify. It would literally take as much work as making a new game...so just make a new game. Super also has flaws beyond just the weird gameplay. A lot of the characters are weak and while the overall story is great, some of the smaller storylines in each chapter are pretty fricking stupid. I don't think Super deserves a remake.
Besides franchises that are dead, I honestly don’t know. The way it reset to shit with Sticker Star then was slowly “a step in the right direction” with following releases was so bizarre.
If TOK just had a normal battle system it would’ve been absolute Kino to me because I did like the adventure. I could never bother replaying it, but to me it was memorable at least.

It's really not that raped. The only outright awful game was sticker star. Color Splash is like a 4/10 and Origami King/Super are like a 6. Mario Party suffered a way worse fate. Until Mario Party Superstars it had gone over a decade with only shitty trashfire games.

I don't know if I'd call it censorship. Vivian being a trap was always a completely unnecessary and frankly stupid idea mostly used for a couple cheap gags. It doesn't add anything to the story or her character, so if anything I'd just say it's improving the script.

I agree that it was censorship in the original game. But I don't really think Nintendo is worried about Christian soccer moms in 2024 for a niche title on a console that mostly sold to adults. This is particularly the case for the European regions, where they changed it too. I think there's a high chance that whoever is handling the script for this game looked at Vivian being a boy and said "why is this even here?" Because if you have a character trait that adds nothing to the character or the story...why have it?
The most obvious reason is they're going to preserve it because frick rewriting the scrip and frick dealing with that can of worms. The likely mentality is that it's a remake, they do things like it was in the original, simple as.

This applies to pretty much almost everything that gives charm and character to the game. For instance Bobbery's backstory with his wife. It's a cheesy piece of dialogue that only serves as a glorified justification to turn a simple interaction into a character trait that doesn't come up ever again.
In your brain you probably cannot fathom anyone ever daring to touch this profound moment of characterization because, despite it having absolutely no bearing to the story it's part of what gives soul to the game.
If you want to have this argument in good faith about censorship and respecting the writer's original creative vision in the future, and you must treat the whole game with integrity. Even if it means accepting parts of it that you disagree with. Otherwise you'd be a "rules for thee but not for me" kinda hypocrite, the type that won't get taken seriously.
Bobber's backstory with his wife is important for several reasons, but particularly for establishing his character. It tells you many different things about this guy and makes you empathize with him. Indeed, killing the character's wife is a very cheap but effective way to provoke empathy.
What does Vivian having a penis add to the story? It's just fetish fuel and a setup for a couple lame, cliched jokes. And as far as the jokes go, they only really work in Japan where the sense of humor is different. They have this sort of reaction based humor, so the way it's setup is he says "I'm a shadow sister" and her sister goes "actually you're just a man!" and the Japanese audience starts laughing their asses off (very quietly because laughing loudly would be rude!). In English, or any western language, that joke doesn't land at all.

Her character is that she's a nice girl who's bullied by her wicked older sister. It's a cinderella reference. I'd say she's probably the worst partner in the game in terms of writing, although she's obviously popular due to her interesting visual design and general usefulness in gameplay.

Paper Mario 64 has a few advantages over TTYD, mostly in the level structuring being more open and varied instead of straight lines, but TTYD has the better characters, world and story and this is an RPG. There's a reason they remade TTYD first.

The reason why TTYD got a remake instead of the first game is because they've been rereleasing PM64 since the Wii. I doubt PM64 will get a remake after TTYD because it doesn't need it. I can see them going for Super Paper Mario next, but as an HD remaster
64 is 100% getting a remake. Firstly because fricking RPG got one and secondly because they would be stupid not to. They can reuse a ton of assets and the new lighting system. They could probably make a 64 remake with a small team in 2 years and it's guaranteed to sell at least 3m.

It would take too much work to justify. It would literally take as much work as making a new game...so just make a new game. Super also has flaws beyond just the weird gameplay. A lot of the characters are weak and while the overall story is great, some of the smaller storylines in each chapter are pretty fricking stupid. I don't think Super deserves a remake.
