Here's 2 reasons.
Their games range from mediocre to decent, almost always half unfinished and tanking in quality by the mid point, yet are treated like the second coming of Christ. Not one product they've ever made is above a 7/10. They are talentless rehashers who copy paste the exact same game over and over for a decade straight, doing far worse than what companies like EA and Ubisoft are lambasted for, and yet face none of the backlash for it.

I thought ER was going to be that. But nope. More Souls shit in a big boring open world. I've completely given up on them truly innovating by now. Sekiro and AC6 were cool refreshes in terms of combat, but even those suffer from having Souls shit shoved into them for no reason. Thank god for Dragon's Dogma coming back.
Shitty overrated games that tried to be the next le ebin RPGS like WoW but are fricking clunky action games. Just weird games in general. You’re supposed to roleplay as a knight with a sword and shield who can’t manage to keep his sword from clanging into the wall, therefore you die. Really epic!
Many studios went further in fewer tries. They have been making the same game for over 13 years now and we still have issues that were present back in DeS in 2009, with Elden Ring being probably the worst step back yet:
>no covenants
>no factions
>no consequences for any action you do
>back to rolling instead of BB sidestep
>back to "snap behind enemy" backstab instead of charged backstab
>stealth and stealth kills are janky and not worth doing as opposed to Sekiro, where it at least always kills the enemy and is faster/snappier
>posture system is nonsensical with arbitrary rules, there is no stance bar on enemies unlike Sekiro, because you'd constantly see how much the game cheats and just resets the bar or ignores your damage
>you have complex level design like Stormveil and Leyndell but it's made pointless with graces placed everywhere, including between shortcuts, which defeats their point, as you can also teleport anywhere, at any time and don't even need to rest at a grace to do it
>enemies can still be leashed
>you can still just run past most encounters
>Level Up Girl finally doesn't have ton of dialogue before the level up screen and now speaks in the background, but this time she is absent from 99% of the game
>archery is still basic as frick and not worth doing outside some broken exploit or cheese
>levels are the same gauntlets over and over, never again they had a level like Blighttown or Depths or Sen's Fortress that have unique theme or change the pace
>ripostes still break on slopes
>pressing lock-on resets camera in front and you cannot turn it off, i never used that function in my 1000 hours in these games
>input buffering is still fricked, not an issue in slower game like DeS and DaS, completely unacceptable in a game the speed of Elden Ring
>story and lore is still a nonsensical clusterfrick because cut content and last minute rewrites
>NPCs are immortal and now there are no-fight zones for casuals
>open world is generic ubisoft shit
>13 years later
>still have to reload areas so npcs will warp into a room right next to them because they have no non-hostile walking scripts
they even did this right in ds3 with the pyromancy teacher teleporting on the spot, which is goofy as frick but i'll take it over reloading areas
I am now completely convinced that the reason their games have "ambigous storytelling" and NPCs who awkwardly stand in place and inevitably go crazy and turn hostile is because their janky spaghetti code cannot handle even most basic interactions and the game would break into a million pieces if they tried to have just one city or a village with friendly NPCs.

Posture system existed before Sekiro. Even as back as Demon's Souls, they didn't needed to call it posture as if it's a new mechanic though.

Elden Ring is basically their design taken to a breaking point and it's most visible with bosses and combat. They cheat, they ignore stance bar/damage, they have insane tracking, they use obnoxious "gotcha" instant snap attacks where the only solution is memorizing the roll patterns, almost every enemy has now some type of Bloodborne inspired "i go into a frenzy and do 50 attacks in 2 seconds to completely melt your armor and health", with Revenants being the most infamous example from ER.
The sad truth is that Matthew was right. Fromdrones cannot accept the fact that the combat in these games really IS nothing special and is too basic for the games to be carried by it alone, so FromSoft have to resort to basically cheap tricks in their game design to make it more difficult, since the fanbase keeps getting better with each game and devs lack the skill to make actually challenging experience. Or rather, they are afraid of making the game too easy and losing the "hardcore game" badge, which is also why ER is torn in this "be casual friendly while also retaining the SOULS GAMES ARE HARD spirit" conundrum.
Dark Souls was good because it was a simpler game about an adventure in a strange, dying land. When you have a 100 hour Open World RPG and ALL you do is the game's basic combat, it just stops being that interesting. And it shows especially when in ER the game is carried mostly by element of surprise. It tries to wow you with vistas and new locations to discover, but it stops being impressive when it finally clicks for you that all you will be doing in those areas is more of the same combat with obnoxious enemies that also have inflated health and damage.
I SERIOUSLY recommend anyone who just finished ER to play Dark Souls or even Dark Souls 3 and notice how little damage enemies actually deal or how endgame bosses like Gael have clear windows in their attacks where you can easily squeeze 1-2 hits with slow, heavy weapons. It's really eye opening.

The spirit summons are probably the biggest indicator for this.
They made them dungeon rewards, they made them upgradeable, they made them part of quests - they basically WANT you to get involved with and use them.
And yet they pretty much completely trivialise the bosses and game to the point where even the final bosses turn from "I spent hours, dying dozens of times" to "killed them on my first try while still having ten flask charges left" because it feels like as if the AI actually wasn't meant to fight more than one enemy.
The issue with Spirit summons is they are blatantly a crutch.
There are only 2 Spirits i consider using as "fair" and intended, and that is Latenna and the Stormhawk. And it's because they both come with restrictions and stand out. Latenna even is an NPC who offers to help you in need, so she's basically a "companion" (shame though she's a generic gray spirit like all of them) and Stormhawk doesn't deal damage but rather provides support and disrupts enemies, so you can imagine your adventurer has a pet hawk helping him in combat etc.
If all spirits were done in this design, where they are unique companions on your adventure helping you in different ways, players would have smaller gripe with using them. Also AI would need to be improved as well obviously.

spirit summons emulate the seamless npc coop souls games have yet to achieve. just because mimic and tiche are broken doesnt mean its not fun to use the page with a knight build, barb with demi humans, etc.

never said its good. That isnt the point of that fight. The point is to prove that even if you limit yourself as hard as possible (RL1+0), the bosses are still consistent as frick and if you get hit its a skill issue with some rare exceptions like Elden Stars.

Kingsfield combat already is better than soulsborne by a large margin, i wanted to see them push it further, add jumping, add timed multi swings, add a third weapon bar for sub weapons, make movespeed and adjustable stat.
But no they simplified absolutely everything from game design, systems, combat, level design, gear, everything without exception ruined by soulsborne. Kingsfield will always be the goat, they lost theyre touch.
