Also awful ergonomics. sold my miyoo mini for $165 and bought a retroid pocket 3 plus with their handle case. good size and is very capable with enough tinkering considering the price and ease of use/flexibility. perfect emulation for everything all the way up to PS1

So here's a question, and I'm genuinely 100% curious about this.

Not only can you literally download a Launchbox or CoinOps or other pre-made launcher package with every video game every made up to the PS1, all with perfect emulation to just keep on a drive and run on your PC with a controller for free, but you can also just buy an Amazon "game stick" which also has every game ever made up to PS1, for like $20. And yeah, it has some kinda shitty controllers or whatever, but it's plug-and-play and it works on your TV with nothing to set up.

So my question is; Why buy a custom-made Gameboy console that you then have to set up and load your own roms and shit onto, for $60 to $100? What does this accomplish?

      Anonymous

I grew up with the Gameboy and have been emulating GB games since 1999 on PC. I just don't think it really matters what you play your game on, as long as it works flawlessly.

50% nostalgia and 50% screen size. Some of those games don't look great blown up like that. Also I've been playing pokemon for so long that playing on a controller just feels wrong

if a product exists that isn't easily available then it's a scam.

they have better ergonomics and can run natively trumping emulation with weak hardware.
the 3ds runs pretty much all the nintendo handhelds natively
and the vita runs the ps1/psx.
        also way better build quality

Right, but the 3DS can't run N64 or PS1 or Saturn and the Vita can't run DS etc.

You can get one of these things for less than 100 bucks that can run anything up to Dreamcast and psp

neither your $60 chinkheld can run dream cast
and psp to a playable lvl.

The folding Nintendo handhelds all jave terrible ergonomics besides the original phat DS.
The 3DS can only play 3DS and some DS games natively.
The DSlite's hinge problem was Nintendo's most infamous design flaw and kept creating a new weak point which would crack with every revision, not to mention the four different quality of screens the DSlites would use had severe ghosting and yellowing.
            [...]
Both my GoW red PSP and my launch aqua blue 3DS had their batteries double in size and damage the battery cover.

3ds have the same gba hardware as the ds they just lack the slot so if you hack you 3ds you can play gba games natively.
I have a fat ds and a 3dsxl and 3ds is more comfortable to play with.

Absolutely not. A pi kit starts at $80 and will only play GB, GBC, and NES titles. To even break into 16-bit emulation, pi kits start at $120. For $50 you can play anything up to PS1, $80 anything up to DreamCast, and $100 now does everything any emulator can do besides the Switch.

I just bought one. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as the shills stated, but it was kinda worse in every way than even I thought it would be.
    • You absolutely MUST install OnionOS. The stock OS is worse than you can possibly imagine
    • Controls are mushy and unresponsive.
    • Cores are limited due to processing power on tap, the ones we have are at best okay
    • input lag sucks because runahead is too hard for it to do
    • sound is kinda bad. Headphones would be recommended but there's terrible noise leaking into the audio circuit.

    But the pros:
    • battery life is decent
    • it's better than using your phone and a touch screen at least

Am I sorry I bought one? Not really. I've wasted more money on shittier stuff in the past. But would I buy it again now that I know what I know? No.

    for me, it's the rg351m
perfect screen size for gba games which is what I mostly play on there and of course I can play any other handheld stuff as well. It's pretty sturdy metal with some weight to it and also has built in wifi so you can easily transfer games and download thumbnails/previews, etc (and theoretically do multiplayer I guess, but haven't tried it). I know some people get these things to play n64/ps1/ps2/gc but I'm not really into that, rather play those on my pc (with the original controllers) or original hardware. Anons are technically right that it's easier to just use your phone or whatever, but the form factor/ergonomics/all-in-one dedicated handheld emulator aspect of it are worth it to me personally

          I like SOTSS on DS
Are the GB DQ games any good? Well I know they are good but can a poketard play them?

/vr/ is also dogshit in general. I saw someone mention how hard it is to find certain colours of ps2 controllers and some autists when nuclear because retro has to mean "back when i was a kid and i'm 50 now" to some of those social morons. I'm 35 but won't shit on a zoomer for looking at a console that came out way before they were born, having an interest in it and daring to talk about it.

/vr/ is a Ganker tier board when it comes to elitism. When the rule change happened, falseflaggers spent a week flooding the board making low quality threads pretending to be zoomers to try and get the change reverted lol.
Now the best threads on /vr/ are the ones the new rules brought and the old ones are still full of the same schizos baiting each other with the same flamewar ad infinitum.

I'm still building my rom library (up to Sega Saturn so far), but the rp3+ has been nice to play on. Finished megaman xtreme and working through some old games whenever I get bored. I tried out the Asus rog at by best buy but it was a bit too big for my tastes and apparently the steam deck is even larger so it was out of the question for me. If I do get another handheld I'll want want to emulate current gen PC games, but that might be a long ways off until valve gets more competition and prices are driven down.

Anyway, AYN is decent if you're willing to wait 6 months to get your unit. And don't forget your custom fees! But yeah, the hardware's alright. I actually own an AYN Odin. Took forever to arrive, then I spent some time to set it up just right, then I never touched it again.

I'll do some research into it then. Do you think Odin 2 or 3 will get ongoing support? That's the one thing I like about the deck is that valve seems commited to it (unlike all their other failed experiments), but I don't know if chinks are at the same level. I always view their handhelds as one and done and it's up to the community to develop firmware for them.

Chinky handhelds are notorious for giving themselves over to open-source communities due to lack of official support, whether for competency or for the sheer breakneck pace at which they're constantly releasing devices and device SKUs and therefore inability to support all of them at once

Valve FAR AND AWAY has the best first-party device support for their handheld PC

Same. I wouldn't expect AYN to support their devices for long, especially when they like to promote brand-new shit before it even hits production and when their [current thing] is still in pre-order.
