What? I just told you that there was no store, no digital sale of games. You registered your games with the big ass bulky box of cancer that had your cd-keys in it.
They still work fine without steam.

Do you know what DRM is? Do you remember how hard it was to convince people that Steam itself was a good idea? all those discussions 2003-2010 about what would happen to your games if the steam servers ever went down in some catastrophic way? The fact that you don't technically own those games should valve ever decide to close your account? These were all very valid concerns. People just don't talk about them anymore because everyone thinks Valve is too big to fail at this point.

                >B-B-BUT IT'S NOT DRM BECAUSE IT HAD NO STORE BACK THEN
Lmao. Next you're going to try and convince me that the steam client was not a complete fricking piece of shit that chewed system resources and crashed all the fricking time up until about 2010.

Do you know that I could install those games from their CDs using the CD keys printed inside and play them without Steam?
Well, technically I haven't had an optical drive in like a decade but you get my point.

What games? How am I going to play Counter-Strike if they shut down the fricking WON Servers you idiot.

Are you unironically braindead? Do you want me to get on a 1.6 pub right now and screenshot all the fake nonsteam IDs right now?

Do you know why the community had to make a WON replacement? because Valve deliberately shut down the original to move people to steam.

Why the frick would they run two separate services? Are you moronic?

Wow, I didn't know Steam was that old. What was it like back then?

Everyone said it was dogshit, I never had problems with it. Then again I mostly just used it to play 1.6.

                >Why the frick would they run two separate services? Are you moronic?
They don't you fricking dumbass. WON 1.0 was the original online service for things like CS before steam came along. It was responsible for hosting the master servers for all those games among other things. Valve deliberately shut down the WON master servers so that they could move people to the DRM client that is steam when steam was fricking dogshit in those days. The client was legit awful and took years to be decent. People who were playing CS for years already before the steam cancer moved to WON replacement (unofficial) so they could keep playing those games without having to go near steam. There are still people playing on WON 2.0 probably. Mostly bots or third worlders though.

You seem to have brain problems so I'm going to ask you again. Why wouldn't they shut down a service they no longer want to support after they moved onto a new one?
Don't dodge the question this time with irrelevant information.

I literally told you this 3 times. Because steam was a fricking joke back then and people were right to refuse it as a "replacement" when it didn't do anything other than give you out-of-client server list and lock your game into a DRM platform.

Steam worked fine, people kept crying because NEW BAD like fricking morons do.
You are a worthless fricking wienersucker that didn't even play the game, like you fricking morons do.
You just feel the need to be upset about things that don't concern you.

Mine will turn 18 in november. I was a teen in high-school when HL2 released and I made my account.
It's depressing that a lot of Ganker users weren't even alive back then.
