Because it was exactly what I needed and my business was gaming related.
Thought about starting a website/forum too but it would be extremely inefficient and slow.
A little bit more customization would be nice though because I had channels with info and it didn't look as nice as it would look on a forum or website of course. But the fast contacting of customers and managing of everything was extremely easy and fast.
Neokyo uses it for their customer support. They do general questions about orders in the support chat and anything more personally identifying is done by DMing you or them. Their support staff tends to be online 24/7 despite being what I assume is a fairly small middleman company so it makes it pretty easy to get queries answered.
On the negative side it means you have to tie what may be just an anonymous gaming chat account to your real name and a phone number, the support channels are public so they crowdsource people answering you if they don't officially answer you immediately, it's not super clear who the admins actually are (I believe the names I left here are admins), they have a channel where you can post your tracking number for automatic updates which is extremely stupid since anyone can see you getting updates to where your packages are and know where you live (But that's opt-in, you directly need to post the number publicly), obviously anyone can just search your user for posts you made which ties back to you, and it looks unprofessional that you have to download an optional program to speak to them instead of them making an inline client on their website.
Then again, this is for an extremely niche thing (Japanese website middleman) so I guess they just assume the people even bothering to use their service already have Discord since they're weebs anyway and are already willing to jump through hoops.

I've seen multiple public discord servers get nuked by the admin.
As an example there used to be a server for playing the war of the ring board game on tabletop simulator. Had a few hundred people on it and regularly had more join. One day the admin gets mindbroken by the Black folk in the rings if power trailer and has a 12 hour argument with some homosexual that actually believed the characters in lotr were all kangs. Almost every person on the server agreed with the admin and then he still goes and deletes it because he's annoyed this one homosexual has a different opinion from him or maybe he just wanted to prove he was a bigger gay. No way to get anything back from it all the strategy guides or custom content people posted are now gone.
Sucks that it happened but forums were not immune to this and 99.99% of discords just keep existing normally

IRC is too archaic for zoomers, and Steam failed to make a sustainable environment for players in their friend groups to interact (chat has no text logging, persistent channels, etc.). Discord is, for better or worse, an attractive platform to use and you must at least admit it has everything you need to start a small community. Hell, I use it to create a server for my fansubbing and scanlation group with more or less 350 members (only a quarter actually posts).

The problem with discord isn't discord itself, the service is fairly useful. The problem is how it makes everything a clique. Don't know the right people, aren't in the right server, don't have the right friends? You are likely never getting into the cool kids area with all the tips, tricks and actual helpful advice on a game. Message boards, may have sucked, & you may have needed login shit to post but they didn't have such a high bar to entry & you at least had a chance of meeting new people. Discord's killed that. The people you meet are weirdos & the people you'd want to meet are in a private server with their group.

I fully believe everyone defending Discord for information archives is either purely stupid or has no idea what they're missing. The ability to not even have 1 account, search using whatever search engine, and find your answer is ten times better jumping through 50 different hoops to get access to a server just for nobody to have answered your question, need to ask it, and get "x?
