actually, yeah, you did sorta have a choice, but only if you had a rare colored pet like fairy or royal (basically any color that changed the pet from its default pose) and were around during the time everything was converted, you got a choice in the matter

It's happened before, never flew. Hell, Neopets tried to do that to itself several times and it never flew. I can't remember the name off hand, but there is a youtuber who covers the history of these pet sites.

They had a game called Dark Faerie for the PS2 which was nice on its own as an adventure game, but lacked the customization and... depth? of the website. it's honestly something I don't know if it can be reproduced so easily

The whole situation seems dumb. Neopets could have just given you a toggle for which version to display; the OG with no special clothes/items or whatever, then the second one as your customized pet.
While that's true and make sense, what you have to remember is Neopets had a lot going against it dev wise.
Everything about the site was shit. It was all held up by toothpicks in web 1.0 crap. This wasn't changed over the years, so the site just became harder and harder to update. Now it's nearly impossible with out a massive infusion of cash and a triple A game staff. There's just to many non-moving parts of the site.
Even when they were owned by Viacom and had Nickelodeon money running through them, there wasn't enough to fix the problems.
This new mobile face they're putting on has the same issues. It's nothing short of a miracle that Neopets still exists as it did 20 years ago.
I'm usually at a place with no internet and old laptops. An offline fiddle raising thing would be nice. Like Idle Calibur that's a fake gatcha made in rpg maker that gives the same feel without having to commit to something always online. I really miss flash (and I know flashpoint exists)
