Never played any game from the saga (except for a bit of Fallout 1 like 20 years ago and I was too young and stupid to get it), and Fallout 4 is currently like 3 bucks on sale.
Is it any good? Will I lose too much enjoyment if I never played Fallout 3 or NV? I know it's a numbered saga but sometimes numbers don't really mean prequels and sequels.

It's a serviceable looter shooter with some crafting and light settlement building. Don't play it expecting an RPG or a decent story.
start with 4, then go back to either 3 or NV, possibly skip the other one, then then try 2, possibly skipping 1, the worst one.

It is a shitty fallout game. It’s a decent dungeon crawler and it’s great if you like building settlements and role playing that you are going on a conquest to rule over the place. Terrible fallout game tho it’s absolute dogshit in that regard.
It's a fun game in spite of its miriad of flaws, and I doubt you'll lose your enjoyment of 3 and new vegas as they're very different games.

I replayed it recently (hadn't played since release)
it's pretty bare-bones as far as decision making/RPG goes, you basically either pick "shooting" or "melee" and melee isn't fun cause you just stand still and click the button, there's even perks that give bonus for standing still.
so you pick shooting, and then you just use whatever has the highest DMG number in your inventory, there's not strategy to anything.
the charisma options are few and far between
there's literally no SPECIAL checks for dialogue anywhere in the game, so having high stat really just gives stat bonuses that don't matter all that much.
the games kinda gay without ~60 mods to give you a slightly better vanilla+ experience.
the base building is a chore, and if you do it properly with high defense and everything, you're rewarded by enemies never attacking so it was all a waste of time anyway lol.
the story is gay "lol find your fictional son you definitely care about because you didn't make a character you're playing as BETHESDA-man"
overall its a pretty big step down from 3 and NV.
For $3 yes. It's not nearly as good as the others, but you can still have fun in it, especially for that price.

Here's my opinion on all games with the word Fallout in the name. I'm not a Fallout fanboy, but I did like a few games in the series
Fallout 1 - good game, but pretty short and has no content
Fallout 2 - very good game, prime example of oldschool RPGs
Fallout Tactics - I haven't played it, it's not even a Fallout game.
Fallout 3 - Oblivion with guns. Bethesda's game design peaked with Oblivion, and that's not a compliment. If you like this game, you're a Black person zoomer who probably had this as your first game. Boring green subway zombie shooter with moronic plot and absolute lack of understanding of Fallout lore by Bethesda homosexuals.
Fallout: New Vegas - very good game, an actual RPG with guns, which is a rare specimen. Unfortunately based on the hilariously bad Bethesda engine, which is the sole reason for ALL complaints about this game.
Fallout 4 - good shooter and dumpster exploration game. Not an RPG and not a Fallout game, unfortunately.
Fallout 76 - mediocre and ugly PvEvP shooter. I have no idea why it has the word Fallout in its name, though.

You seem to be missing my point, did you even read my original post? I liked Fallout 4, it's good for what it is. Steam says I spent about 300 hours in it. It's a good game. It's just that it's not an RPG, and it has a completely different lore than 1, 2, and NV. All of which makes it not a Fallout game at all. They should have called it, I don't know, Junkyard Raider or Mutant Slayer: Eternal. I would be the first in line to be a fanboy for this game then

For the sale price it's worth playing, especially if you mod it. It's the most casualized of the series but it's still generally fun to play.
New Vegas is widely regarded as the best in the series. Fallout 1 & 2 are the OGs of course, but they are so dated and slow I can't blame anyone for skipping them.
Play 4 if u want looter shooter rpg. Play new vegas if u want actual first person rpg. Play 1& 2 if u want old school top down rpg
