The best suggestion I have heard is something like American Super Mario 2 where it's a totally different setting with different enemies, no Bowser/rescuing Peach, maybe totally new music and new mechanics. We need to go back to when the Mario formula hadn't been established yet. I know in reality it will something familiar to capitalize on the success of the movie.
Nutendo doesn’t do “break” games anymore. Bowser is always the villain in Mario and the game ends with a giant Bowser boss battle in his castle, Gabon is always the villain in Zelda and the game must take place in Hyrule.
More detailed and unique theming to the levels. They should take some inspiration from the DKC games.

The issue with the NSMB games are that they all looked and played practically the same except for the DS one, the gameplay by itself was good but after 4 of them with not much change it becomes uninteresting.

It'll be in a 2.5D style similar to Donkey Kong Country Returns or Tropical Freeze. There will be a character roster similar to a Mario Kart or Party game, with each character being able to perform a unique ability from Peach's float to Donkey Kong's roll. With the collection of Star Coins, you can unlock skins for characters like in Odyssey. Also like in Odyssey, Bowser is taking over various kingdoms. The rulers (like kings or queens) are transformed into monsters that serve as bosses, almost like in Mario 3 with the kings that are turned into animals. You start in the Mushroom Kingdom before travelling out to different kingdoms and freeing them from Bowser's reign, ending with a final confrontation back in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Name SMW romhacks worth my time that aren't collabs like VLDC, SMW central is a pain to sift through for good stuff.
Super Princess Peach, SMWCP2 and The 12 Magical Orbs were some of the standout hacks I've been playing lately. The VLDCs are still secretly the best source of good 2D platformer level design in 2023 hands down, just saying.
Thanks, I'll have to check these out. I remember my first exposure to SMW hacks being some edgy demo called "Exodus to Death" on one of those sites that lets you stream emulators without downloading anything a decade ago. Believe the plot is everyone gets killed and mario gets sent to hell and he has to fight demons. It's funny and cringekino but sadly 20 minutes long.

Yeah I guess it did. It just wasn't as satisfying to play the obviously cookie-cutter made levels in Adventure mode as it was to play the tailor made ones of old. Didn't play 1 but the pacing for 2's campaign sucked absolute balls, I don't want to buy shit for the castle and talk to Toadette every time I want to play a fricking Mario level I want to just press "A" to start.

Mario Maker 1 made sense because it was during the anniversary, and it had touch pad controls and special amiibo that came with it, the package just 'made sense', but the sequel was a huge frick you to 2d fans, not only that they didn't even bother to update it past 9 months.

Mario U is great. If you didn't play it because of the art style, you deserved to miss out. If it's the same designers, but given more time to polish their design, it's probably going to be the best 2D Mario of all time.

Mario gets a super speed mushroom and ends up doing the Flash time loop. He even sticks his face through the time bubble to see Baby mario floating around. This game lets you time travel into any 2D Mario game at any level at any time. You start running in the time bubble and it's New Super Mario Bro's U at the end of the game and it just goes in reverse the whole way through all the 2D games until you end up at the original game's first level. You can stop at any point and just play the game with current Mario's move set.
