Mimics were always a simple favorite of mine alongside the vast variety of Slimes they made up to mesh with each of the families, but once DQ8 brought in this bad boy, he's always resonated with me. Wish he wasn't such a consistent wienersucker to fuse though.

It's tarnished by being designed as an eternal grinding game rather than as a standard adventure, the amount of surplus grinding you have to do for your characters to reach the level of power that they reach through normal play in the other games is incredibly obnoxious. You won't even learn Kazing without an insane amount of extra grind, which is incredibly obnoxious considering that last boss can randomly one-shot your characters.
Rhapthorne actually got shit done in a very short amount of time and basically won until the heroes came back with some bullshit.

Do you guys want the Monsters games to be slower or faster paced? AKA Joker 1/2 vs the 3DS games. I remember it felt impressive to capture the Gigantes on Infant Island, he was way strong. Now it feels like you can get strong monsters way faster. Which isn't a bad thing for postgame, but it feels a bit weird to have a team of A ranks and feeling like you're only halfway through the main story. Might be exaggerating a bit.
I'm almost finishing the main story of J3Pro, i have a team of A+40, and the game does NOT feels easier, if something I feel like I'm lagging, I'm really terrified of the final boss.

Also, I don't like monster tamer that force you to level new monster from lv1 like Monhun stories. Do you need to grind new monster or they just born with high lv already like SMT?
From j3 pro to this it's down like 200 ish. From 2sp it's down like 400. However, both games have a lot of recolor syndrome.
you have to level them up to 10 to fuse them (that's like one battle in the mid game)
also they have models and animations from XII, Treasure (scrapped Monsters 3) and the mobile gacha
all of them are very high quality
the only thing that can limit the roster is the hardware itself

And yes you fricking grind, despite some people say Dragon Quest put the grind on Grinding on JRPGs, but there are tools to make the grinding easier, it only gets out of hand at post-game stuff.
It's closer to SMT than MHS. The new fused monster resets level back to 1 but it carries skill tree investments from the monsters used to fuse it so it is stronger and has more tools at level 1 than a normally obtained monster.
I played DQMJ3 before the translation of the Pro version came out.

Like parts of assets, both monster and oveworld looks like this game was initially meant to be on 3DS, the texture resolution is all over the place and that insane bloom level is not helping at all.

They kept DQM style fusion will skill tree inheritance in the 3DS remakes of 1 and 2, and they showed skill trees being inherited in the trailer. You don't have to worry about it not being in.

J3P for story and mechanics
DQMJ3 translated is very good. I think the pro translation is out also but don't quote me on this. It has a ton of QOL improvements, more open world, and monster riding.
But DQMJ2 is very comfy and closer to OG dragon quest experience.
For me the top 3 is: DMQ2 3DS > DMQJ1 > DQMJ3P
I like the progression vibe and "immersion" of the the first DMQJ1, while DMJ3P has a lot of hype elements (you can interact with terrain like a platformer, there's more monsters variety, you can ride many ALL monsters in the game, it's very impressive overall for a 3DS game, etc) it feels less like you're progressing and more like you're playing in a sandbox if that makes sense, it's like you already start at the post-game, it's still fun but looking back Joker 1 felt more like an adventure.
What stands out about 2 to make it your favorite?
nta but 2 has the best feeling of "adventure" and the most balanced gameplay out of all of them
(the japanese mobile port of 2 3DS is still very popular in japan to this day)
DQM1 3DS has randomly generated maps which I don't really like, DM2 3DS has a very traditional Dragon Quest map, it really hits that sweet spot that feels like playing a "Pokemon but better".
It's simply satisfying to play.

Monsters in particular or Dragon Quest in general?
There ae encounters similar to regular DQ games, but you fight using Monsters, and have the ability to scout pretty much every Monster for your team, except some boss monsters. But you can fuse monsters as well to get those you can't find in the wild, including boss monsters. The games actually feel pretty similar to the mainline games, but they're gone about a bit differently.

In most mainlines you have human party members, over here you're the only human and you can't fight for shit, so you'll have to recruit monsters to fight for you, kinda like Pokemon. The breeding system is pretty deep and fun, the resulting monster and skills vary quite a bit depending on the parents.

Yes, start with the GBC games or Joker 1 like other anons suggested.
DQM is arguably the original monster collecting RPG alongside Megami Tensei (DQV had random monster recruitment and that mechanic spun off into the DQM series) You have a party of 3 to 4 monsters, maybe even only 1 or 2 depending on their size in some games, to fight and scout other monsters. The player character doesn't fight but instead uses items and utility spells to help in combat.
Mainline is more about saving the world with a party of characters while DQM is more about making friends with monsters, saving a loved one, getting home, or stopping demons and shit from coming into the human realm.
If you like fusion autism in SMT or breeding to make ultra powerful monsters in other monster collector games then you should try DQM out.
3 vs 3 fights.
You can "catch" monsters and use them in fusions to create new monsters.
Gameplay is similar to mainline games with some caveats:
DQM1 (gb/3ds) has random dungeons, kinda like a mystery dungeon game but the battles are traditional turn-battles.
DQM2 (gb/3ds) has a traditional map, it's like a normal adventure but you can catch monsters.
DQM Joker 1 (ds) has you travelling to many different isles and collecting "stars" to progress (some vague Super Mario 64 vibes lol)
DQM Joker 3 (3ds) has the best graphics, you can jump around and interact with terrain like a platformer, ride monsters, among other things.
Haven't played Joker 2.

He misspoke I think. Some of the games have been 3v3, but there's a size system in more recent games. You can have 4 small monsters, or 2 small with 1 medium, 1 small and 1 large, and stuff like that.
they implemented the size system in Joker 2 with a 3 slot size limit and later expanded it to 4 with the Terry's Wonderland remake (Joker 2 felt every limitng with only 3)

I hope we can actually make the final boss without having to download some limited time online exclusive monster this time. I made Dr Snapped and Dragovian Lord in Joker 1 2 years ago and it was kino. Having to hack in the online monsters for the 3DS games just isn't the same.

One thing that's always bugged me about these games is that the higher-rank monsters are always locked behind some 16-way synthesis eugenics-ass chains that you'd only get through datamining or shit passed around in japanese magazines/social media.

I like Monster Collecting RPGs/JRPGs, but I've never played DQM. I tried DQ and I didn't like it, especially how clichéd, superficial, and brain-dead it was (I know that's like the appeal that it's a "safe" game), but is DQM any good? Does it have some depths to it's combat and monsters? I'm not expecting Siralim-like autism, but something not so "for kids".

I played only the first 2 on SFC so far and I liked it. Despite the fact that you NEED a physical map, the ability to explore the world was frankly refreshing compared to the typical RPG full of railroading and gated areas everywhere that give everything away via quest markers.
Leveling up and equipment upgrades really felt like upgrades, and everyone in the party did something, although in 2 Tonnura (the green prince) was only useful as a meatshield thanks to the boss's 100+ damage breath attack.
Forgot to say. I HATED secrets that required you to examine unmarked tiles (e.g. the seed in the shrine south of rendarak). Who the FRICK thought that was a good idea?
