These supposedly educated people believed he died in prison because the only thing they actually knew about him was that he was PUT in prison for standing up for his beliefs. Their implicit bias that everyone but them and those who directly agree with their perspective is inherently evil and cruel for the sake of cruelty alone is what made them presume that "they must have left him to die." The truth is that all throughout history people have been learning and testing their understanding of the world and as a whole, trying to reduce the amount of suffering that goes on, even the people who have committed terrible atrocities, they all believed it was in service of building a better future for the people best posed to take advantage of it. No American in history said "These damn Injuns will never be equal to us, they don't deserve to live." It was always "These people, though generally noble and honest, occasionally lash out at us and impede our God given duty to make the Earth a better place. We have no choice but to push them back. Perhaps we can teach them our ways and our beliefs to spare them that fate." That's cruel and hostile and objectively wrong by our current standards, as we've come to the conclusion that it was not, in fact our purpose to exploit the Earth to the fullest, but the intentions and rationale of the people who came before us was not as mindless or selfish as it is often presented to be. It was always people striving to do better than what came before. It was always an overwhelming majority of fundamentally good people working with a narrow definition of good that came not from direct evidence, but from intuition and the dogmatic advisement of authority. We had to build "Good." We still are. It wasn't always there, and unfairly criticizing those who didn't have the tools to come to the same conclusions we have is doing a great disservice to the moral innovations that have come about over time and driven us to hate good people.

We don't really know what happened, the information on the path it took was never a mystery beyond the first few weeks, until they figured out the handshake circle thing that narrowed down where it crashed.
What really happened on the plane is the true mystery. The video points out a lot of evidence the captain hijacked the plane, but that's a theory. It could have been some no records passenger in the plane who hijacked it, maybe a fire broke out, fricked up some electrical systems and the instruments, and with the smoke and eventual lack of oxygen, pilots got lost but tried to keep the plane flying thinking they would see land soon. Hell, that conspiracy about some secret cargo could be true for all we know.
The captain takeover is the most likely and always had the most evidence (this was known for a long while, since you need ecelebs to point it out, Lemmino made a video with most of the same information as green dot 5 years ago even mentions the flight simulator stuff, also shows several articles mentioning this), but we can't know for sure and that's why they're trying so hard to find the black box.
But perhaps it would be better to leave it as a cat box...
