Akira Tago was still alive for Azran Legacy. He died in 2016.
This game is not contradicting the Katrielle anime which was the first place where they confirmed Luke had moved to the United States specifically. Said anime also continued and concluded the plotline left hanging in the game so it can be considered "done" even if it doesn't get a sequel game. Same deal as the whole Inazuma Eleven Ares series which ended up being anime-only but is being acknowledged as having happened in the upcoming game.

Even if the new console comes out next year (highly likely) the Switch will undoubtedly get new 3rd party games for a couple more years at least, just like the DS and 3DS did. The install base is just too big to cut it off right away. Plus you realize games take time to make, right? Or do you think devs stopped working on Switch games years ago?

The 3DS did fine in its twilight years and the GameBoy was still getting games even when it was 9 years old. Pokemon Red/Blue/Green were released when the GameBoy was essentially 10 years old. You wouldn't this because you weren't alive on this planet until you left your dad's nut sack in 2010.
If ninty was planning to release a new hardware in that time probably l5 would have been told. Which of course means there could be one and l5 just chose to release on switch 1, or is secretly planning a cross gen release abd is waiting for ninty to announce switch 2 for them to reveal it.

A year or two after The Unwound Future. Which puts it 20-something years before Layton's Mystery Journey, but that's unlikely to matter.
Oh yeah, I'm thinking we're back boys. My only worry is puzzles. I really hope they've improved since lady layton. That shit was a snoozefest. But damn, 2025 is a long ways away. Least we'll have some trace memory kino soon enough to fill the void. Layton's back, Ghost Trick got revived, and Trace Memory got revived. It's genuinely a good time for gaming.

I'm stuck halfway through The Diabolical Box, not because it's hard but because the game just got boring. I've played the first one and the Phoenix Wright crossover, does the series get more entertaining? The puzzles are a hit or miss and I find it hard to get invested in the "mysteries" of the games.
Unwound Future is the peak of the series, the prequel trilogy just doesn't live up to it and the puzzles afterwards are definitely weaker.
If by "more entertaining" you mean "has even more batshit endings" then yes.
