PC port was not only the best FF port to this day(7R runs like shit, KH is okay I guess but no one played it on PC, SoP notoriously runs like shit, XIII ports are awful, especially XIII-2 etc.) it also had PC exclusive bells and whistles such as hairworks. On top of that Windows Edition is port of Royal Edition. Which inlcudes DLC and later patches to the game(it had no final dungeon before a patch lmao). It was a complete game not the beta version people played on consoles and it was also a good port. Yet sold like shit.

My theory is this. Game dev cycles nowadays take 6+ years. When FF16 was in it's planning phase, the gaming market was deep the Sony domination mindset. PS4 was selling like crazy, Nintendo was dicking around with the WiiU, and the Xbox was on life support. The future of Xbox was assumed to be dead so no need to care about a successor to the Xbone. Japanese devs absolutely hate PC, it's just a part of their culture. They love the idea of sticking with 1 Japanese console to make games for and Sony came to them with a long standing relationship and a giant sack of money and a sales pitch - "Xbox is dead, MS will pull out in 3 years, you don't need PC when 90% of your target audience owns PlayStation".
And it worked. 6 years later the Switch has kicked Sony out of their home turf, Xbox came roaring back with an aggressive strategy, adoption of the PS5 has been slow, and Gaben is still winning by doing absolutely nothing.

The aftereffect will be more optimized games and an end to the fragmentation of the resource needed to develop videogames now that everyone can focus on a single platform instead of three.
