I mean Oblivion is only a few points off of Elden Ring's metascore ffs, there's no way those games are on the same level in terms of quality.
that's a product of the time they were released. There were different expectations for polish. fricking oblivion came out when I was in college and it was buggy, but also one of the most amazing single player experiences ever at that time.
I know, I was there, Oblivion blew my mind as a teenager, but I grew up and realized I wanted more out of my RPGs than Bethesda could give me. Maybe it was a product of its time, but I feel like truly great games never age. I'm playing through FO3 again on my XSX right now and it's hard to overlook the faults, but it still oozes charm.
I mean, I think From Software are faced with the same problem that killed my enthusiasm for Bethesda RPGs: overfamiliarity. Both studios are responsible for making very samey games (AC6 not withstanding) and I get deja vu whenever I play their games because of it.

Oblivion was made the launch of the Xbox 360 basically. There was nothing better or made on that large of a scale. It was the best because there was no competition besides Morrowind, which is even more dated. A 2006 game that basically had no other competitiors vs a 2022 game that has all the modern technology and advancement behind it.

Fallout 4 wasn't boring and it had the city building settlement mechanic to make it "unique" and different from other rpgs. YOu can't build your own villages or cities or towns or whatever in Witcher, Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, Baldur's Gate, etc.
Starfield however adds nothing new. They could have added some sort of space minigame, space fighting, create your crew, and shit like that but so far they've shown NOTHING about ships in a game about flying ships in SPACE.

Its one of the most boring games I had ever played, my any attempt to explore ended up in a total disaster. I remember finding some sort of deep bunker in the most radioactive hellhole place on the map and there were literally nothing at the bottom of it, just regular shitty filler dungeon. For Bethesda games specifically, Skyrim and Fallout 4 have Survival mode mods which got rolled into the official games. You need to eat, sleep, stay warm, hydrate, etc.
In Fallout 4's Survival mode, there's no fast travel, so you gotta leg it everywhere. You can only save when you sleep, and you can only get a full 8 hours rest in a clean, safe bed. Random bedrolls and dirty mattresses out in the wasteland will serve as save points, but won't provide enough rest to alleviate exhaustion. Likewise, traditional healing items like stimpaks and radaway will cause thirst, hunger, exhaustion, and for radaway, even immunity suppression, making you more vulnerable to diseases. All of this means that the Settlement system becomes a lot more important to create a network of rest stops with beds, food, water, doctors, etc. I've been playing it the last few weeks, its a cool experience.
Skyrim's survival requires eating and warmth; in cold areas, you need to dress in warm clothing (like fur armor, bc the traditional armor sets don't provide much warmth), light torches, eat hot food, huddle around campfires, etc. I think fast travel is also turned off (but the wagons between cities still work), so again, you gotta leg it everywhere. This made inns, houses and Hearthfire much more important for me for the same reasons as Fallout 4's Settlements; they're dedicated rest stops.
Basically, I am confident that mods or the core game will, at some point, come up with a Survival mode for Starfield, so rest easy.

I've had enough save corruptions and random crashes wiping out hours of progress to last me a lifetime. Some aspects of these modes were neat like the use of Radaway tanking your immune system making you more unacceptable to infection and ammo having weight. I can't imagine that Starfield won't ship with some kind of mode that takes into account these things without going overboard with it. Fuel management, oxygen and not eating raw ayy meat can add another layer to the experience.
I think Todd mentioned being open to adding a survival-type mode later on like they did with FO4, but they don’t have anything like that in the game currently.

I replayed Oblivion recently and if i would only show me walking in the woods it would be boring as frick for the viewer, but we all know there is a lot of interesting content in that game with some of the best questlines of the Elder Scrolls series. No, it would be extremely easy. Take No Man Sky engine, and just slap in all the custom content that was made for Starfield. Crafting is already there, base building is already there. Only difference is No Man Sky being a small company that needs to rely on generated content, while working with an engine that was designed for this. Bethesda has a lot larger workforce that is good at crafting custom content, but they do so on a dated engine that was rigged to work on generating content. It's either HDR or deliberate color grading. It varies based on the area, so I'd imagine it's the latter. It's yellow in New Atlantis, blue-green elsewhere, etc.

The stuff on the left looks like post-process color grading, so it shouldn't be hard to either disable entirely or hijack so you can change the look of the game on an area-by-area basis. I'm going to try when it releases.
It's used to mimic atmospheric subscattering of light across large volumes while also using it as a means to hide lack of detail on geometry in the foreground or background because of poor LOD performance. You can see it with the vegetation. The game's lighting system isn't so good as to deal with trees and light filtering through. So this color grading is used to create that effect.

This really is just fallout 4 in space. The shootouts with raiders, the outpost layout with a few supply crates and lockbox, the cities made up of a small number of buildings, all of it. Fully expecting a mid to high 80’s rating, maybe low 90’s if Microsoft greases enough palms.
If you honestly think these leaks weren't premeditated to drum up more hype at a time when people could not care less about a Bethesda product and Xbox is failing as a brand, you have been hoodwinked.

Let me make something very clear, before I get called a schizo: If a game has not even released yet and people are more excited for the 18+ modding scene than the core experience, you have a fundamental problem with your product. This is without even mentioning the boatloads of criticisms from what little has already been shown.

Compare the level of discussion surrounding the game now from just a week ago; the leadup to release could not have accomplished such a thing. No, it's the exact opposite, they're all colluding together because they know that without all this negative press, no one will buy the game and those who do will be even more disappointed than if they had gone with "reduced expectations."
But why do a stealth marketing campaign at all when they can just advertise the game normally? Bethesda is in control of its own marketing, the review moratorium is something they imposed on others, they're free to flout it as they wish. They could have released gameplay clips every few days, showing off a new gameplay mechanic/faction/whatever. How do they benefit more from slowly releasing these janky, piecemeal clips showing off dry, boring gameplay and random bugs, instead of conventional clips of their stronger gameplay elements? What does that do for them? It reaches fewer people than regular gameplay releases because its all underground and gets taken down quickly, it looks dumb and it does not portray the game in a positive light. The content being shown doesn't elicit excitement outside of people who are already committed to buying it. Meanwhile, the gameplay shown in the Direct in June was what got me interested in Starfield because it showed off the game's big draws, not random glitches, limitations and filler content.
So why would Bethesda do that when the alternative marketing method seems more beneficial to their goal, which is to sell games? It just doesn't make sense to me.
