This game is not listening to them, it's more casual friendly than T:A with increased projectile speed and larger hitboxes. I think that gaining speed should probably be easier if they want to appeal to casuals though.

particularly in trying to cash in on the esports craze, despite all the changes since first beta test to try to fix it, it's very clear that the game is first and foremost meant to draw people in via esports hype, then milk them dry via the eventual microtransaction store, then once they're finished pumping, they'll quickly dump

I gave the tribes 3 demo a shot and you're outright required to enter a bunch of 4v4 matches before you're even allowed to join anything bigger. If you're concerned about scaring off new players you don't fricking do that. When you're new to the game you want to enter a larger match because the fact that you don't know what the frick you're doing matters far less in a larger team.
They removed the requirement, but Erez is obsessed with this mode and unironically thinks it should be its own game. It's actually my favorite mode in the game, but he thinks it's some great casual mode. It's actually sweaty as frick and when you get stomped it's actually enraging.

Games like Tribes and Titanfall don't die off because they're bad games, they just tend to make it easy for high-skilled players to abuse the frick out of new/casual players to a point where they're don't have fun and can't comfortably learn the game then the playerbase bleeds out more and more due to both the boredom of playing with the same people all the time and new players getting their heads slammed through a brick wall.
I can understand both sides of the argument, but this is primarily what makes skill-based matchmaking useful. Without the satisfaction of actually achieving anything and feeling some sense of progress, what fun can be had? You're just there to fuel some lifeless hermit's ego.

Either way, I think that when it comes to bringing Tribes to the modern era, neither the oldgays nor the compgays should really be listened to. Compgays want some boring 5v5 shit, nobody wants that. Oldgays largely want a S:T or T2 remake (depending on the flavour of oldgay), ignoring the new possibilites we now have two decades later.
Tribes should be massive, it should be spectacular. Huge playercounts. High speeds. Massive maps. Vehicles, outposts, bases, all that shit as well. Designing a game around such aspects should come first, the design elements to actually get there should be rather secondary.

it looks nothing like the fortnite UI. fortnite actually has pretty good UI. the only bad thing about the UI is the browser for the different game modes can be confusing until you realise you only need to look at the top row and ignore the rest. otherwise it's very intuitive and visually appealing.

What has changed the last month? I didn't 100% hate there was no regenerative health after boosting yourself, but I thought there needed to be a way to regain health somehow. Assaulting is going to be slow as frick then since you can't regen after boosting. And the flag capper and chasers that hurt themselves getting speed will just be easy clicks for snipers. I can't see this ending well.

Do you know how in TF2 you can pick and choose from one of nine classes, each with alternate weapons? There's a lot of variety so if you get bored with one playstyle you can switch things up. But if you play competitively, only half of those classes are viable, and you have to play in a specific, optimal way. It turns the game into a second job. The focus on competitive and it's consequences have been a disaster for multiplayer gaming.

Global Agenda and T:A didn't even have that luxury, funnily enough. There were 0 devs working on T:A nine months after it came out and then a skeleton crew showed up once a year to patch a few bugs. This was while SMITE had over a thousand employees working on it.

The movement is trash compared to Ascend (except ski dash is nice) to make midairs easier because that releases the happy chemicals.
In practice ttk is very low, and so offense can't make a dent before getting destroyed by a D-stack. Without health regen, the game turns into 2 D-stacks with random blink cowboy caps getting out and the rest of the players playing TDM. So basically how T:A gameplay went for the past 5 years.
I've spent over 10,000 hours capping in T:A and honestly would've loved something closer to maybe 1/8th the size of a Planetside 2 map with T3 movement (and air control addressed).

Tribes 1 had a lot of mechanic, deployable sensors and turrets, there was a map dedicated to sensors range. It was more than people used but we did use them, we would deploy inventories, repair generators and turrets, use vehicle, we knew heavies were for defense or assault, light armor for scouting/flag capture.
Thought, the vehicles became pointless with the shit physics of the time.
Tribes 2 was good but had already downsized the number of tools, casual teamplay was already a lost cause in gaming. Still good because it was balanced around what it had. Armors were still balanced for their roles.
We still needed to deactivate shields to allow a rapid capture.
Tribes game with a SP mode were... special. Worth the experience because literally no other game had skiing mechanic but a risky take, especially with the arena. I'm not surprised they added obvious fanservice to bait kid's in.
Armor had amazing aesthetic and the grapple was a genius idea.
Then came Tribes Ascend.
Literally skiing the Free2Pay / Pay2Win wave, which it only alleviated later to save face, before doubling down with XP locked loadout. Only 2 factions because "it's free" (I paid 30buck and would have paid more for a classic game)
I still consider the armor aesthetic to be shit, even compared to Starsiege Tribes
That's where it broke down, it bet everything on the speed meme, deployable and station repair were just left-over from old game, most map are just a contest of sanic flag capture or sending a blue plate to the capper and nothing else matter.
And obviously since player speed reached stupid high level, vehicle essentially had no point at all beyond existing

I have a thousand+ hours in TA and Tribes really attracts the worst type of people. The pseudo intellectuals with ego. These players are tryhard maxxers that only play the single best loadout and try to troll games. If you try to play TA to this day you'll come across these players. TA had a lot more to deliver. T3 is so gutless with reused assets and barely improved graphics. They physics started out as a cool mix of TA and T2 physics but the comp losers cryed so hard the devs iterated it intoit playing almost exactly like TA physics. Chain still dominated just like TA, and spinfusors are way easier to hit because the projectiles have massive sticky hitboxes with the netcode. It has no vision so right now it feels jumbled. Personally I want a old school high player count battlefield type of game play with larger bases and vehicles, and people that are not so up tight
It was very floaty with much less air control and a ton of momentum. There was tons of inertia to the point that if you could get yourself moving bouncing off objects wasn't much of a penalty and you could go very fast yet you still had little air control, so I liked blazing across the map. Right now it plays just like TA with slightly less air control and lower speed ceilings.
game seemed very flat, like it might just barely even squeak it's way into existence. I want large maps and large teams with vehicles and shit. I would like some fricking content to explore. tribes 3 just feels like a tech demo or something, a minimum viable product for them to be able to bolt a cash shop onto.

It took me over 20 hours to stop bottom-scoring in Quake Live when I started playing it, and I still feel like I know nothing when I compare my self to other players I see. I'd say that if you come from a console or any one of the AAA games that straight up give you aimbots for no reason then it's probably mentally unacceptable for them to accept that they are just garbage at games without aim assist.

Dev abandoned it to work on a MOBA called Smite. There was also some really bad design decisions like adding hitscan weapons to the game and introducing speedcaps. It was still pretty good for a few years, but Ganker never forgave them. Can't say they're wrong

I'm curious as to how else you would fix this issue, it doesn't seem like you can have a game about high speed CTF without the problems it brings.. It's only a matter of time until maps become solved, where the fastest and safest cap routes are pinpointed down to a science. Isn't there only so much map geometry you can adjust until there's only gentle slopes left?
The same goes for chasing cappers getting phased out for sniping them instead. Once people started getting really good at capping the only way to stop them was with having two, sometimes three people dedicated to sniping.

16 v 16 and 32 v 32 was peak Starsiege Tribes. Everyone was allowed to play whatever they wanted. And when we tired of it, there were always duel maps for 1 v 1. Nothing pussy about it - and small team size games were used for scrim matches.

First impressions mean a lot and the initial visuals of Midair were fricking DOGSHIT. I mean nausea inducing crap, they've since smoothed over the graphics but instead of looking like ass, it just looks like a generic Unity asset flip game.
For actual gameplay, there's really not much depth to it because the only shit to do is run at the enemy flag stand autistically over and over until something happens. There's no other objectives and there's no real weight to anything.
This is a hot take, but people need to stop solely associating tribes with speed. There's a lot more than just going fast and capping flags, there's base defense, deployment of supplemental tools (sensors, cameras, deployables, jerichoes, etc), fighting over a central hub to provide your team additional supporting structures/respawn points, vehicle combat which isn't solely to cap flags, and combat which doesn't just involve going really fast and shooting projectiles that have 50000mph velocities so midairing is piss easy. Unfortunately, both the vocal playerbase and the moronic devs at Hi-Rez likely never actually played T1/T2/Starsiege, so they don't understand there's more to Tribes.

I played it and had a lot of fun. Seems like it's in competent hands surprisingly. Just not much to talk about at the moment. All I can say is when I saw the demo for this, a spark lit inside me that's been out for a long time.
Valheim is neat, but ill be honest I dont play MP and just use console commands to make it a creative thing where I build big ass castlez in mountain and shiet, sadly enemies respawning is fricking cancer even with invisibility to npc. I mean its hard to enjoy a well built citadel and city when fricking dragons constantly screeche in the background and wolves spawn in between houses out of sight.
youll be happy to know the dev is very aware how much chain and hitscan turned off new players. The first playtest had laughably unusable projectile snipers that were only effective maybe to 50 meters or less, and while they have been buffed as the community DEMANDED MORE SPEEEEEEEEED, they chose to buff spinfusors to extreme levels and only gave snipers and chain a moderate buff. The superfast disks still break the game imo but in a better way.
I think right now the game is kind of a middleground between what the dev wanted, and what the community whined about.

There is something about this series that makes peoples blood boil. And I think it has to do with expectations mostly. Some want it fast, some want it slower and more tactical, some want it big, some want t2, and some want midair.

See that just doesnt parse. There are other devs. Midair, legions overdrive. They are free and anyone who has any interest in tribes has heard of them. But those devs (imo) made much worse, simpler, and ultra-competitive games that lacked any kind of soul, or fun teamwork mechanics. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that only hirez seems to get what makes tribes fun. Making high speed games is a huge challenge and a balancing nightmare. And most offshoots try to boil it down to make it 'work'

That's a name I haven't thought about in a long time. I remember playing it with the rest of the Gankerirgins while it was still embedded in that one free game website before it shut down and the game was spun off.
Having the actual name behind it is a huge boon, it's why companies pay so much for IP rights and owning the name/copyright to a franchise, instead of just making their own spinoff.
And yes I agree that MA/LO failed because they tried to be too hardcore, and I've brought up plenty of times that TA will also fail because Hi-rez can't get it out of their ass to stop appealing to esports moments. Not just in their marketing, but the raw game design feels so artificial and overly tailored for #epicdiscordmontageplays.
There are so many shitty band aid fixes to bad design (basically every perk is in a way a bandaid, the worst offender being Chaser), and every map is designed in such a way to overly promote...how to explain it...too smooth gameplay? Too easy? Too formulaic? You spawn in a dedicated room, you ski the exact same route, you reach the enemy flag after 30 seconds, and then you either get out and cap or you die and don't cap and get pissy because there's nothing else to do.
Old tribes games you could vary your playstyle massively and pivot on a dime. You could be a HO that's raping their base when your capper dies midfield, creating an opportunity to suddenly llama grab and scoot back to base at a meandering pace and it would WORK on occasion. You could be Medium farmer, placing down your sensors and turrets, when you catch sight of an enemy medium/heavy wearing an inventory pack going behind your base, so you stealthily follow him then discover where they're setting up their cap routes and can plan accordingly, or just destroy the remote he planted. Your team might be unable to crack the enemy defense until you decide frick it, let's have 3 people load up a bomber and just shit on their base for the next 10 minutes and everyone is having a blast until a shrike rams its dick up your tailpipe.
None of that shit exists in T3. There is only autistically running at the flag and making EPIC MIDAIR DISC MONTAGES.

I gave the tribes 3 demo a shot and you're outright required to enter a bunch of 4v4 matches before you're even allowed to join anything bigger. If you're concerned about scaring off new players you don't fricking do that. When you're new to the game you want to enter a larger match because the fact that you don't know what the frick you're doing matters far less in a larger team.
They removed the requirement, but Erez is obsessed with this mode and unironically thinks it should be its own game. It's actually my favorite mode in the game, but he thinks it's some great casual mode. It's actually sweaty as frick and when you get stomped it's actually enraging.

Either way, I think that when it comes to bringing Tribes to the modern era, neither the oldgays nor the compgays should really be listened to. Compgays want some boring 5v5 shit, nobody wants that. Oldgays largely want a S:T or T2 remake (depending on the flavour of oldgay), ignoring the new possibilites we now have two decades later.
Tribes should be massive, it should be spectacular. Huge playercounts. High speeds. Massive maps. Vehicles, outposts, bases, all that shit as well. Designing a game around such aspects should come first, the design elements to actually get there should be rather secondary.

Do you know how in TF2 you can pick and choose from one of nine classes, each with alternate weapons? There's a lot of variety so if you get bored with one playstyle you can switch things up. But if you play competitively, only half of those classes are viable, and you have to play in a specific, optimal way. It turns the game into a second job. The focus on competitive and it's consequences have been a disaster for multiplayer gaming.

The movement is trash compared to Ascend (except ski dash is nice) to make midairs easier because that releases the happy chemicals.
In practice ttk is very low, and so offense can't make a dent before getting destroyed by a D-stack. Without health regen, the game turns into 2 D-stacks with random blink cowboy caps getting out and the rest of the players playing TDM. So basically how T:A gameplay went for the past 5 years.
I've spent over 10,000 hours capping in T:A and honestly would've loved something closer to maybe 1/8th the size of a Planetside 2 map with T3 movement (and air control addressed).

Tribes 1 had a lot of mechanic, deployable sensors and turrets, there was a map dedicated to sensors range. It was more than people used but we did use them, we would deploy inventories, repair generators and turrets, use vehicle, we knew heavies were for defense or assault, light armor for scouting/flag capture.
Thought, the vehicles became pointless with the shit physics of the time.
Tribes 2 was good but had already downsized the number of tools, casual teamplay was already a lost cause in gaming. Still good because it was balanced around what it had. Armors were still balanced for their roles.
We still needed to deactivate shields to allow a rapid capture.
Tribes game with a SP mode were... special. Worth the experience because literally no other game had skiing mechanic but a risky take, especially with the arena. I'm not surprised they added obvious fanservice to bait kid's in.
Armor had amazing aesthetic and the grapple was a genius idea.
Then came Tribes Ascend.
Literally skiing the Free2Pay / Pay2Win wave, which it only alleviated later to save face, before doubling down with XP locked loadout. Only 2 factions because "it's free" (I paid 30buck and would have paid more for a classic game)
I still consider the armor aesthetic to be shit, even compared to Starsiege Tribes
That's where it broke down, it bet everything on the speed meme, deployable and station repair were just left-over from old game, most map are just a contest of sanic flag capture or sending a blue plate to the capper and nothing else matter.
And obviously since player speed reached stupid high level, vehicle essentially had no point at all beyond existing

I have a thousand+ hours in TA and Tribes really attracts the worst type of people. The pseudo intellectuals with ego. These players are tryhard maxxers that only play the single best loadout and try to troll games. If you try to play TA to this day you'll come across these players. TA had a lot more to deliver. T3 is so gutless with reused assets and barely improved graphics. They physics started out as a cool mix of TA and T2 physics but the comp losers cryed so hard the devs iterated it intoit playing almost exactly like TA physics. Chain still dominated just like TA, and spinfusors are way easier to hit because the projectiles have massive sticky hitboxes with the netcode. It has no vision so right now it feels jumbled. Personally I want a old school high player count battlefield type of game play with larger bases and vehicles, and people that are not so up tight

There was tons of inertia to the point that if you could get yourself moving bouncing off objects wasn't much of a penalty and you could go very fast yet you still had little air control, so I liked blazing across the map. Can someone explain what happened with Tribes Ascend? I was too young to follow it then but all I remember was that it was beloved by Ganker, and Ganker beat reddit one time in a game despite the odds
Dev abandoned it to work on a MOBA called Smite. There was also some really bad design decisions like adding hitscan weapons to the game and introducing speedcaps. It was still pretty good for a few years, but Ganker never forgave them. Can't say they're wrong

Was this a true speed cap, or flag deceleration?
I'm curious as to how else you would fix this issue, it doesn't seem like you can have a game about high speed CTF without the problems it brings.. It's only a matter of time until maps become solved, where the fastest and safest cap routes are pinpointed down to a science. Isn't there only so much map geometry you can adjust until there's only gentle slopes left?
The same goes for chasing cappers getting phased out for sniping them instead. Once people started getting really good at capping the only way to stop them was with having two, sometimes three people dedicated to sniping.

I remember absolutely hating the movement. It was like a blend of TA and T2 which is not smart.
First impressions mean a lot and the initial visuals of Midair were fricking DOGSHIT. I mean nausea inducing crap, they've since smoothed over the graphics but instead of looking like ass, it just looks like a generic Unity asset flip game.
For actual gameplay, there's really not much depth to it because the only shit to do is run at the enemy flag stand autistically over and over until something happens. There's no other objectives and there's no real weight to anything.
This is a hot take, but people need to stop solely associating tribes with speed. There's a lot more than just going fast and capping flags, there's base defense, deployment of supplemental tools (sensors, cameras, deployables, jerichoes, etc), fighting over a central hub to provide your team additional supporting structures/respawn points, vehicle combat which isn't solely to cap flags, and combat which doesn't just involve going really fast and shooting projectiles that have 50000mph velocities so midairing is piss easy. Unfortunately, both the vocal playerbase and the moronic devs at Hi-Rez likely never actually played T1/T2/Starsiege, so they don't understand there's more to Tribes.
Unfortunately, the light Black folk will always think Tribes is all about them and demand everything that hampers their 500 sanic unchasable back-to-front grabs be changed.
Unironically in the year of our lord 2024 the humble turret farmer static defense enjoyer is the most oppressed member of the gaming community.

youll be happy to know the dev is very aware how much chain and hitscan turned off new players. The first playtest had laughably unusable projectile snipers that were only effective maybe to 50 meters or less, and while they have been buffed as the community DEMANDED MORE SPEEEEEEEEED, they chose to buff spinfusors to extreme levels and only gave snipers and chain a moderate buff. The superfast disks still break the game imo but in a better way.
I think right now the game is kind of a middleground between what the dev wanted, and what the community whined about.

There is something about this series that makes peoples blood boil. And I think it has to do with expectations mostly. Some want it fast, some want it slower and more tactical, some want it big, some want t2, and some want midair.
But theres hardly enough marketshare for even one tepidly successful fps-z type game. We want 8 games. We'll maybe get 1. So everyones just angry.
a huge part of it boils down to hi-rez being quite possibly the worst company you could have in charge of making the game and the fact that they're making a second instead of letting someone more competent take over is infuriating
See that just doesnt parse. There are other devs. Midair, legions overdrive. They are free and anyone who has any interest in tribes has heard of them. But those devs (imo) made much worse, simpler, and ultra-competitive games that lacked any kind of soul, or fun teamwork mechanics. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that only hirez seems to get what makes tribes fun. Making high speed games is a huge challenge and a balancing nightmare. And most offshoots try to boil it down to make it 'work'

That's a name I haven't thought about in a long time. I remember playing it with the rest of the Gankerirgins while it was still embedded in that one free game website before it shut down and the game was spun off.
Having the actual name behind it is a huge boon, it's why companies pay so much for IP rights and owning the name/copyright to a franchise, instead of just making their own spinoff.
And yes I agree that MA/LO failed because they tried to be too hardcore, and I've brought up plenty of times that TA will also fail because Hi-rez can't get it out of their ass to stop appealing to esports moments. Not just in their marketing, but the raw game design feels so artificial and overly tailored for #epicdiscordmontageplays.
There are so many shitty band aid fixes to bad design (basically every perk is in a way a bandaid, the worst offender being Chaser), and every map is designed in such a way to overly promote...how to explain it...too smooth gameplay? Too easy? Too formulaic? You spawn in a dedicated room, you ski the exact same route, you reach the enemy flag after 30 seconds, and then you either get out and cap or you die and don't cap and get pissy because there's nothing else to do.
Old tribes games you could vary your playstyle massively and pivot on a dime. You could be a HO that's raping their base when your capper dies midfield, creating an opportunity to suddenly llama grab and scoot back to base at a meandering pace and it would WORK on occasion. You could be Medium farmer, placing down your sensors and turrets, when you catch sight of an enemy medium/heavy wearing an inventory pack going behind your base, so you stealthily follow him then discover where they're setting up their cap routes and can plan accordingly, or just destroy the remote he planted. Your team might be unable to crack the enemy defense until you decide frick it, let's have 3 people load up a bomber and just shit on their base for the next 10 minutes and everyone is having a blast until a shrike rams its dick up your tailpipe.
None of that shit exists in T3. There is only autistically running at the flag and making EPIC MIDAIR DISC MONTAGES.
