Mechanically it might be better than GoW1, but not ragnarok. Also you can't even choose a difficulty that even forces you to play smartly. Also, in the new GoW games you have to find gear that will allow you to cycle through magic/runic abilities perpetually, whereas in FF16 you can actually constantly use ability spam and nothing else - it's boring.

Nah most fantasy games have rpg mechanics for the player to have fun with. This game is ambitious because it removed the fun stuff and it didn't even need to. Each stance could have cool abilities like Steal, Protect, Auto-Life, and Ultima at high levels that you could choose to hot key.
But nope, Final Fantasy in name alone and they expect fans to slurp it up. I'm happy fans didn't like it and the new young audience they were chasing didn't play it either. Only people who still talk about it are FF14 fans because anything is better than there shitty mmo gameplay.

Honestly Ben was VA of the year for me, Asterion guy was good but he was a side character. If we're going by side characters for performance I would even say Ralph Inerson should have been nominated and perhaps won for his performance as Cid. It was so fricking good, best Cid in the entire FF series. Even the guy voicing Gav was so good, spot on Geordie accent giving the character of Gav that working class charm.

FF7R was better than FFXVI. Also, 2020 was a less competitive year. The other nominees included Hades, Ghost of Tsushima, and Animal Crossing, none of which would be nominated in 2023.

Final Fantasy needs both a fun adventure AND a decent story to be successful. FFXVI had a decent story, but a shit adventure. FFVII-R had a fun adventure, but a dogshit 1/3rd of a story. It only being part 1 of 3 does not excuse it. FFXV, for all of its flaws, at least had a fun adventure, but an abysmal and incomplete story, so it was shit. FFXIII had fricking neither. FFXII made a world with nobody or nothing to give a shit about. FFX was the last FF game that properly, and even then you can argue the adventure itself was kind of lacking because of "hallways"

However I did listen to some of the music the other day, and my only thought was that Soken was completely phoning it in. Of course it's hard to old up to Uematsu, but compared to a lot of tracks in 7R or, hell, FF13 and its sequels, the FF16 soundtrack has zero identity. Every track I heard sounds like something that got rejected from FF14.
You don't need to hold up to Uematsu honestly, but you do need to be memorable. In my honest opinion Sokken is a one trick pony and it doesnt really work. Square Enix has a lot of better composers on their payroll, and even games like Triangle Strategy and Octopath had much better music overall

in what way? the "open world" zones are just fights and some side quest item fodder to grind in, the devs don't even call them open world because of it. the combat is a few straightforward combos and setups with special attack loadouts on cooldowns, when it isn't in cinematic mode trying to do really easy QTEs everywhere. the RPG part is near-nonexistent. the only ambitious part of the whole game is being a baby's first DMC meets Asura's Wrath while keeping nearly all of its cutscenes in-engine and real-time, and even the writing fell apart.
it's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but it didn't push the industry forward one inch, much less final fantasy. everything it does, other games both in the series and outside have done it better individually.

In an interview they straight up confirmed Echoes of the Fallen is cut content they didn't have time to put in the base game. It was probably going to be your usual optional dungeon with superboss but coming with the base game.

Exactly my thoughts. I'm buying this game once it comes to Steam just to spite the dramaqueens (not buying a shitstation 5 though, you only need a PC and Steam Deck these days)
XVI was the game the series needed but not what was wanted. After the development hell of XV and the abortion that was XIV 1.0, Final Fantasy needed a competent release that came out on time and on budget. That's basically what XVI is. It doesn't shine in any particular area but it's not an embarrassment either. After being flat on its back for a decade or more, XVI was Final Fantasy learning to walk again. Hopefully XVII will see it run again.
What went right

The bad
>PS5 exclusivity killed any hype for the game, most people outside of japan just didn't get a PS5 this generation due to the fact you couldn't buy the damn things for half of its lifespan and there is no worth while games on it that you can't play on a 5+ year old PC at this point, and Yoshi-P didn't help by riding the exclusivity deal as if it was a good thing in interviews
>despite the combat feeling good, it lacks depth, a lot of your kit is shoved into Eikon abilities, which are limited to 3 basic and 6 specials via a loadout system, instead of incorporating them entirely into your kit like a full fledged DMC character would be designed
>You have party members, but there is no way to use them effectively to set up combos or synergize with, only Torgol is actionable and his actions are kind of useless, as his 'heal' is a slow heal over time of chip damage, and his set up attacks aren't worth incorporating into your combos
>Too much NPC larp cutscenes that should be NPC talk-a-longs during quests when you're fighting monsters or moving from area to area
>Sidequests are entirely NPC larp cutscenes designed like an MMO questline, where you spend 20 minutes listening to faux shakesperian LARP, and 2 minutes actually doing gameplay
>The first hour of the game is fricking boring
>The last 2 hours of the game are fricking boring
>Ultima is a shit main villian, especially when Benedicta, Kupka, and Clive's Mom are in the game
>A lot of the game just feels unfinished, especially the combat which definately feels like there is a really amazing DMC special edition game remake under the surface waiting to come out, but the current version is just too fricking basic
The main thing though, is that no one can play the fricking thing, no one owns a PS5, not even weebs

the problem with XVI was, its biggest potential playerbase was on PC, and they thought "OHGEEWIZZ LET'S MAKE IT SONY EXCLUSIVE" and then acted surprised when it wasn't the whopping success they were hoping

It’s more action than rpg or even action rpg. It follows the philosophy of character action games where you’re not forced into a build or playing a certain way so how much you engage with the mechanics is entirely on you. It’s also pretty damn easy on its normal difficulty, and the harder difficulties are locked behind beating the game. If you’re looking for something like 7 remake or even most other action rpgs like tales, you might not have that good a time. If you’re looking for a solid action game that plays similar to dmc and platinum games, you might have a good time. The highs are insanely high, but the lows (usually in the form of slow story pacing at certain points) can drag. Side quest objectives and exploration is also pretty weak here.
