They'd literally even sponsor some very high quality mods themselves in the name of that having a turn around and becoming more of a profit for themselves. Prime the pump to drive attention towards the paid mods marketplace. Which would just become outsourced DLC.

there are strong resemblances to hollow knight but to the detriment of the game IMO, the backgrounds might as well be unused HK art in some places but the ones that arent are crazy different in artstyle and quality, some of the animations sprites and effects are near 1:1 except for the ones that arent, that look way worse

I don't really get the legal status of Nexus. Maybe if they didn't have rewards to people who buy memberships they wouldn't need to worry about copyright claims so much. If someone is not profiting from the mods or ripping the assets directly it shouldn't be problem. At the same time I understand that the system doesn't often give a frick about the details and will make arbitrary judgements that a modder "stole IP" and added it to another game even if that's not how IP is supposed to work.
Legal status is a fiction that can be contrived from nothing, piss of someone with lawyers enough you'll be in gitmo irregardless of the circumstances.
