Kaine is not a troony. She's a hermaphrodite. She's a woman who was cursed with a penis between her legs because of the bug in the Replicant system but other than that she's 100% a normal woman with a fully functioning pussy and natural breasts. She would never use her penis while having sex with someone she loves

It's salt, not snow. It's also summer if you read the date during the intro, but that's easy to miss unless you're paying attention intently.
But yonah and nier are also dressed in winter gear and you can see their breathe so shrugs

Kaine is not a literal troony though.

Yeah she's a clone of a woman, but the cloning procedure is falling apart after 1400 years and so genetic mistakes are starting to occur. More of a hermaphrodite than a troony.

why does original nier hate book in the beginning? I never understood that part or I glossed over it maybe

      Anonymous

The book was grimoire noir, not weiss, and right before the prologue he saw everyone get corrupted into shades after touching the book, so he was scared. All the shades you fight in the intro are failed attempts to find the original gestalt.

He thought he lost everything and the shades became bigger buttholes (from the replicant's perspective) after the shadow lord reared his head. Then he became borderline onetrack on revenge when it came to shades. Shame too, cause he had a 10/10 completely loyal gf in waiting right next to him the whole time and buried any feelings under his autistic need for vengeance right up to the very end.

This but also the shadowlord's attack was a rogue attack. Devola and popola try to do damage control for gestalt nier's autism in route c but it doesn't work out.

He is by nature a murderous rageaholic murderhobo but society forced him to be good goy. Once his sister was kidnapped and a convenient enemy offer itself, it provided the perfect excuse to indulge in his primal nature.

Drak3 read the novellas (probably afterwards, especially one of the mikhail ones) and the mahou shoujo manga (it precedes the events of the game and gives a ton of context to stuff the game doesn't explain at all such but is also spoilery at the end.)
There's another ultra edgy manga that links Drak1 and 2 but its terrible.

This. He had no idea the consequences of what he was doing because no one told him. Hell, even within the context of the game, there's nothing in the documents you receive at the end that actually explain how Gestalt Nier's death will end humanity. It's actually the one bit of writing that frustrates me about the game, since there's no logical reason for Devola and Popola not to explain what's happening explicitly at the end.

Replicant Nier was just protecting his sister and likely died "knowing" he did the right thing in doing so. The consequences wouldn't be really felt for decades.

He knew he was at least killing humans, though. The facade king tells him shades are human if you complete his side quest in part 2.
Plus, devola and popola literally gave nier the gestalt documents and told him that they were nothing but shells for human souls: the shadow lord's castle even has a lock that requires you to recognize this to proceed.

If he didn't know, then he's genuinely stupid, which is a possibility. But it's also realistic that he was somewhat aware, and just didn't care.

If devola and popola talked it out more it might have been different but honestly he was already plugging his ears and shouting NO IM NOTHING LIKE YOU, so it was already probably too late. He was too far gone on his path for revenge.

This is seconds before the boss fight with them, they acknowledge the Shades are twisted/corrupted and immediately attack you. Nothing about that gives Nier any reason to pause.

          >The facade king tells him shades are human if you complete his side quest in part 2.
Are you talking about at the end? Because...again, that's right at the end.

And I'm talking about knowing the consequences of what he was doing, not that Shades were once human souls.

            Anonymous

It's before you go to the shadowlord's castle. The game is nonlinear so you can do the sidequest at any time after the facade king's wedding. It can be as early as like the 2nd or 3rd piece of the key. It's the one that asks you to go back to the temple to kill some shades that are causing problems. If you talk to him after completing it, he'll tell you they're humans.

There's nothing that would've indicated to nier he was dooming humanity though, yeah. But he was absolutely aware he was killing humans and some of his companions even call him out for this during other quests and cutscenes in the alternative routes.

It gives me the vibe that he was aware, but didn't care. Everyone was screaming in his face the whole game that these were normal people (emil's aerie destruction scene comes to mind), but like the play he chose to actively ignore it.

              Anonymous

I don't disagree with you on that then, for sure. There are lots of clear hints that Shades are, at the very least, sentient beings with emotions long before he learns they were once human, but even then "human" to him has a different meaning than it did to D&P or the original humans.

Replicants are, from his perspective, the true humans and Shades/Gestalts still randomly attack people and cause untold damage. The fact that they were the "originals" eons ago doesn't -- and really shouldn't -- change that perspective.

        >since there's no logical reason for Devola and Popola not to explain what's happening explicitly at the end.
He wouldn't have any reason to trust them anyway. They'd been actively lying to his face (and to everyone else) as long as he could remember, and once he gained any actual ability to do things they got right to using him for their own ends. Anything they said in that room would've been meaningless, nothing they could've said would've stopped Nier from killing Shadowlord even if he did believe them, which he wouldn't have. That was the point, they had dug themselves a hole so deep no "well let us just sit down and talk this out would've sufficed", which is why Popola gets so upset when Nier actually says "let's just talk" after killing Devola.

          >this out would've sufficed",
          *this out"
She couldn't just let him kill the Shadowlord and Nier's version of "talking" at that point was just "get the frick out of my way so I don't have to kill you"

I think this is the proper reading of the game. Nier doesn't even believe them at first either. He immediately shouts "it's a lie! I don't believe it" when the first phase of the fight begins.
He didn't even know if these were the real devola and popola in the moment. He was so confused and taken aback that he probably wouldn't have believed anything they told him.
They really did just dig themselves too deep by literally lying for 1400 years, and to replicant nier for his entire life.

I imagine he would've autism powered headstrong through anything they threw at him. He was absolutely unable to be dissuaded from this point. His only goal, literal life purpose, was killing shades, and the shadowlord was the biggest shade of them all literally holding the whole shade terror attack operation together. Remember that in those 5 years replicants have been massacred by the shadow lord and his attacks.

It's more the shadowlord's fault than devola and popola's, but their lying also doomed them from the start. They decided to play both sides, and because of that, neither side actually trusted them. Both gestalt and replicant nier fricked off to do their own things and there was nothing either of them could do about it.

The best part is that a 100% save means he absolutely had all the information available to him. All the part 2 side quests involve shades taking over human bodies and humans turning out to have been shades, and the mask king's quest ends with him stealthily dropping the lore that shades are former humans, right before you go to actually fight the shadow lord. It's optional and easy to miss and most people did miss it.

He knew what he was doing but he doesn't care because he's a massive Siscon. He probably didn't know that what he was doing would kill humanity, but he absolutely knew shades were humans and sentient.

Maybe. It's a little hard to tell. It looks like somehow the yorha moon database has many alternate time line data of various places. Why? How? I don't know. It's very possible that 10H was getting confused when viewing one of the timelines, thinking it was her own. It's really hard to figure out.

Futasisters, he's damaged goods. He doesn't even really like Yonah, she's just his autistic focus that distracts him from nihilistic thoughts. If she was gone he'd shoot up the village the next day because there'd be no more reason to keep pretending, its his veneer of "good brother" that keeps him going despite being a resentful beast. He doesn't even care if humanity ends. Maybe he would pretend to if it wouldn't cost him a Yonah. And he sure as frick doesn't care about killing humans.

He cares about her because she's a murder hobo as well. Their shared bonding routine is massacring shade children.
That's how I always read the scene where she b***hslaps him for crying. It's like "oh NOW you feel bad? After everything we've done? Man up bae"

They're a math made in heaven because they're codependent psychopaths with a shared goal and hatred.

Kaine literally heard baby shades crying as you killed them and said nothing and is frequently in turmoil as she murders the more innocent shades like Kalil. She's a pure evil b***h and is completely irredeemable.

You can like the characters in spite of them being bad people. I think that's a big lesson from nier: you don't have to be a "bad" or "evil" person cartoonishly to do bad things. You can be evil out of love for someone else, like nier, or out of trauma, like kaine. But at the end of the day, they're both still genocidal maniacs who literally slaughtered babies and young children trying to run away from them.

I love the cast. And the way they love each other is really well done and beautiful. But they have zero sympathy for people who are different than them and that's literally a huge story point in the game. I don't think I missed the point the game was going for.

That scene where she looks at him is awesome lol.

So (You) are a mentally autistic idiot. Cool. Kainé killed Shades not only because she wanted revenge for her grandma but also because there was a literal fricking demon who was possessing her body and holding a knife to her throat forcing her to kill and act with pure anger 24/7. He told her that he would take over her body permanently and start killing innocent people if she ever fought back or tried to show emotions other than wrath. She always saw herself as a freak who didn't deserve to live or be loved because she was ostracized and discriminated against by people who hated her for simply being different. She lived by pure self-loathing and hatred until she met Nier who was the first person in her life who treated her like a person and made her realize feelings like love. All because of kindness and acceptance, not bloodlust. The moment she beats him up, she realizes the fact that she loves him and doesn't know what to do about it

Nier himself is not meant to be evil or even a selfish person. Yoko Taro said it himself. Nier was killing Shades only because he thought that those were objectively evil monsters and he was doing the right thing by fighting them. He thought that he was not only saving Yonah but also other innocent people and the world as a whole. Nier is a person who deeply cares about other people and constantly tries to help others. Just like the player for plays the game for the first time, he simply wants to do the right thing. He doesn't know the actual consequences of his actions because the truth is hidden away from him.

That's the entire point. Yoko Taro said many times in interviews that he was disappointed by people like (You) who interpreted the story as a plot about Nier and others being bad people and playing as a psychopath "villain". Taro said that he simply wrote a story about people who want to do the right thing without realizing the consequences because both sides of the conflict see others as the bad guys.

Also are you missing the point that SHE UNDERSTOOD THE SHADES AND CHOSE TO DO NOTHING like ??????
Even if tyrann was forcing her, tyrann sure as frick wasn't forcing nier. She could've told nier at any time during their quest "hey, that kne shade in front of us? Yeah it's actually just a helpless child literally pleading for its life right now as we approach. We can walk by it."
But she didn't. She didn't even warn nier.

Thats the most evil thing she did: keep silent while able to act as a mediator. She could've literally solved the fight in the shadowlord's castle (tyrann was even on their side by this point and felt bad for the killing), but every step of the way she chose to keep being a murderhobo.

Taro has also said that he's happy when people interpret their own meaning from his stories, so I think you're massively pulling that out of context. He's pro fantheory, not anti: he embraces the concept of death of the author.

Tyrann would take over her body if she told Nier or anyone else anything that would cause less fighting and less killing. Tyrann wants destruction because it's entertainment for him that he uses to fill an empty hole inside himself, and hates when it's taken away from him. Kainé also views the majority of Shades as evil. She believes that even the little ones will become as deadly as the adult ones sooner or later

I think it's a mix of that and genuine Yokotoro autism over the fact Drakengard 2 exists.
None of the original Drakengard 1 cast really matter in the over-all scheme of things as time went on compared to the likes of other Yokotaro protagonists. Even Angelus despite being referenced multiple times as the Red Dragon that got shot down over Tokyo's major impact on the story is that the corpse went missing.
And the only logical conclusion I can come to why he's no disinterested in the original cast, is do to someone else wrote them without his major insight in DG2 and gave them a continuation and endings there.

It actually really bothers me that they've started making alternate timelines an active part of the Draken/Nier story. I fricking hate multiverse stories. I more or less just put up with alternate endings because as far as I was concerned there was still an active canon storyline.

Anon, drakengard 1 literally ends with you time traveling to modern day earth. You can write it off as a joke ending but the game very intentionally paints it as being "a battle across space and time".
Even aside from that, drakengard 3 already added these elements to the series a decade ago. Timelines were crucial to that game's story.

It's been part of the series since the very first game. It's the lynchpin of the entire series.

lynchpin implies that series wouldn't work without it. I personally think that any drakenier game would have been perfectly alright with just one ending, with possibly one unlockable extra ending.

      Anonymous

      >It actually really bothers me that they've started making alternate timelines an active part of the Draken/Nier story.
They're not really timelines per say, more like alternate realities since they don't tie together perfectly in terms of causality. Some endings in DoD3 for example require just randomly different actions from the Intoners despite branching off at a later date, at the very least it's not as set in stone or boring as the marvel multiverse stuff.
I think it's cool, like a chicken before the egg scenario. DoD3 caused the events of DoD1 which then caused Nier, then Nier the guy caused Automata afterwards. And while there's zero evidence to suggest it's from Nier as far as I know, DoD3 itself and by extension DoD1 are both started by the mysterious emergence of a modern day city. It's always been an integral part of the series.

      >there was still an active canon storyline.
There is a canon main timeline, for the player's ease of understanding this is the timeline Accord is searching for.

        Anonymous

        >And while there's zero evidence to suggest it's from Nier as far as I know, DoD3 itself and by extension DoD1 are both started by the mysterious emergence of a modern day city.
Accord and the dragons both came from the same place as the city and according to the guidebook it's filled with "metal dolls" (android corpses). Michael in his prelude novella talks about fighting a war in the old world against insects/worms and dolls/puppets. SINoALICE confirmed that dragons in DOD were created as weapons and in Re[in]carnation androids find a human experiment who turns into a dragon. Taro confirmed in the NieR 10th anniversary livestream that Accord was created in the kingdom of Night during the war against the aliens, and that around the same time the kingdom started deploying weapons called "dragons".

In the context of DOD1 there's no mention of the city coming from somewhere else so it is partially a DOD3 retcon. Taro had already started work on the YoRHa stageplay during DOD3's development so Accord's connections to Automata lore would have already been at least roughly planned out back then.

Will we ever see her again?

        >Will we ever see her again?
She's a main character in YoRHa 1.3 and has a brief cameo in Verdelet's sex dungeon in DOD1.3. She gets a few mentions in Re[in]carnation one of which implies she's directly connected to the plot so she might show up in the last chapter.

Reminder that while he was definitely willfully ignorant, Kaine could understand Shadows the entire time and didn't bother to clue anybody in. Also the "real" Yonah was doomed the moment she touched the book in the prologue because you can't come back from relapsing, abducting replicant Yonah was pointless. All things considered replicants did nothing wrong.

Not that anon, but I'm pretty sure the only thing is they can't reproduce without their souls. They're fully capable of living out their lives once their gestalt is dead, but there is no way to make another replicant of that gestalt after the gestalt dies, so that's why the replicants die out. They're a race incapable of sexual reproduction and they "reproduce" through being reborn continually from the corresponding gestalt data. No more gestalt data means no more replicants.

You're missing also that the entire reason they did this program was because of the diseases wiping out humanity. I don't think the issue was that the gestalts were gone, the issue was that the replicants were susceptible to the same plagues that were killing humans and a cure was never properly found. Once the Gestalt program failed, the twins were destroyed and the diseases plus alien invasion made replicants die out.

            Anonymous

This isn't true. Replicants eradicated the disease before the start of the game. This is canon from the Grimoire Noir book. Gestalts weren't released until the world had already been cleansed, and by the time of nier, it's been long gone.
Replicants only died off because they're incapable of reproducing.

Devola and popola were delaying things while they tried to cope with replicants becoming sentient. During the act 1 of the game, shades kidnap yonah and are probably very close to beginning the process after they offer yonah to the shadowlord. Then nier comes and fricks things up by stealing grimoire weiss.
It isn't answered why they waited so long considering it was cured well before the events of the game, but it's worth noting that they couldn't activate the fusion at any time. The seven sealed verses were a double lock made to ensure that weiss and noir were only activated at the correct time, and weiss only has the sealed verses after nier collects them at devola and popola's request.

Devola and popola sending nier out to find the sealed verses was probably the beginning of the project's ending, but the shadowlord got impatient waiting 400 years longer than he was promised, so he attacks nier's village and tries to force it.

I don't know why they only began collecting the sealed verses that late. It isn't really explained.

No, the problem was that the gestalts degraded the longer they remained outside of a physical body, and the replicants began to break down at a fundamental level, which is what the black scrawl was (it's literally the genetic code unravelling, the angelic script letters indicative of black scrawl are literally spelling out DNA sequences)

        Anonymous

Replicants explicity dont have souls though, they just developed their own will, but they're still soulless.

          Anonymous

Replicants don't have gestalts. I think a point of the game is making you question what a "soul" even means. I think they have the equivalent of souls when they begin developing their own will.

      Anonymous

Once he kills his Gestalt he doomed everyone to die shortly afterwards. Even after Kaine uses the N2 replicator to bring him back they both die not too long after.
The Replicant bodies that form their own souls live longer then ones still chained to their Gestalt's but their DNA is still contaminated by the process and they develop the black scrawl and more or less rot from the inside out.

        Anonymous

Not that guy but the world was already doomed from the start and the Gestalt/Replicant project was never going to work. Humanity was fricked the moment Replicants developed consciousness and basically became their own people. Fusing back with your Replicant would just cause you to live a life of miserable physical and mental pain for both of you. Your children would probably suffer a similar case

Nier and Kainé didn't die "shortly after". They lived for many, many years according to Automata. Probably lived up to their 50s seeing how Yonah was living for 5 years fine without even showing a semblance of black scrawl despite the fact that she should be the one suffering from it the soonest. There are also theories regarding 1.22 about Kainé becoming human in ending D and Nier becoming human in ending E so there's also that

    Just finished ending B
Is ending C really worth it? I can't find anything different so far

There are a few new cutscenes between devola and popola that play at certain points while you collect the keys, and there's a big difference in the louise part of the game.

Route D has no new content at all so after getting route C it's better to just reload from the last savepoint outside the castle and repeat the last section to get D, or you can just go straight for D and ignore ending C entirely as whether you get C or D depends on a choice you make right at the end. You should keep playing and at least get ending D as it's required for route E, which is all new content.

Guess I'll just tough it out. Kaine's commentary added more than I was expecting to route B.
