IT'S OK WHEN VALVE DOES IT
Yep. Do not infringe work. That is what a communist does.
>valve defense force has arrived
The funnier part is that Nintendo only does it when it's competing with something they're doing. Valve has no such excuse.
You mean what an actual capitalist does.
If you can't do it higher quality cheaper and you can't even convince people you are you obviously have no right to be making it because the consumer is king in capitalism.
Government backed monopolism is not capitalism.
peep
>Portal 64 DMCA'd by Valve
>not a single peep from Ganker
hi, independent fact checkers have confirmed that this post is missing context!
the real story is that valve was contacted by nintendo directly.
>DMCA'd for using a proprietary Nintendo 64 library instead of the legal one
>This is somehow anyone's fault but the mod creator's
It wasn't even DMCA'd, the guy wanted to make money off of it and Valve told him "you legally cannot make money off of it because you used Nintendo's proprietary code", and the guy shut it all down on his own.
For added context, he already had a patreon and a gumroad up for Portal64 (not for any kind of access but just to get money from dumbasses), Valve only stepped in when the guy tried to get it listed on Steam. I don't know if he really needed the N64 libraries for a PC port of the project.
it is
valve doesn't like their games on shitty consoles, after what happened with the orange box
Finally, I've been looking for this thread all day.
So, I'm not surprised they killed tf2 source 2, thats a product they may or may not want to cook up in house.
On the other hand, going after Portal64 at the same time has scared the shit out of the modding community because they don't expect valve to act like nintendo.
And now some lads who were building tf2 as a free modded gamemode for a vr pvp shooter pulled the plug yesterday out of nothing more than fear that they'll get dmca'd next.
I just got a vr headset as a gift this week and found out about Contractors the day before the mod got pulled. At least they still have PS2 battlefront 2 as a mod mode.
All I wanted to do was w+m1 with my own two hands.
Keep an eye on fortress connected, they've recently shown interest in my old "proper" TF2 VR mod based on the leaked source code. Gaben willing, i will get off my ass and get it integrated one day.
>they've recently shown interest in my old "proper" TF2 VR mod
>based on the leaked source code.
Now this is progress
why do so many projects shut down ahead of DMCAs out of fear? all a DMCA does is request you to stop, it's not like you go to jail or get fined millions of dollars just from that
>why do so many projects shut down ahead of DMCAs out of fear? all a DMCA does is request you to stop
They didn't want to continue and so they make up an excuse rather than just coming out and saying "Hey I don't feel like making this anymore."
>they make up an excuse rather than just coming out and saying "Hey I don't feel like making this anymore."
Why?
Pride? A strong sense of feeling like they're wasting their time on a project?
spending hours a day for 0 pay on a fan project for autistics is a tall order
It wouldn't have gotten finished; the 2nd half of the game is too complex for 64 to handle anyway, unless it has a bunch of new loading zones added. Autists may finish it anyway since the tools are out there.
I think it was kind of a bad idea to use the Portal name and logo here.
IDK, m8. None of my business. It's a little odd that Valve would do something like this so out of the blue. It might suggest that they're planning something. It's not surprising coming from a company as protective as Nintendo.
>but legal reasons
stop being GAY Ganker
>can't clarify whether valve actually told the guy to take the project down or merely advised him to because apparently the post that broke the news is behind a patreon paywall
>even game journalists can't agree on this and their articles all have conflicting stories on what exactly happened.
YOUNG DEV!
Don't care about either but I'm gonna support the company pushing linux because I fricking hate microsoft.
Of course it's okay when Valve does it, Valve is Ganker-core and we support Sweet Baby here.
what is this soulless garbage? are studios really outsourcing their writers?
yep.
fortunately valve doesnt make games anymore.
but god help us if they actually decide to make a new game
valve hasen't dmca'd him, you frickin moron, they just warned him that he was using nintendo's code in a project of their IP, and last shit they wanted was nintendo comming after their ass.
>not a single peep from Ganker
You must have been blind.

replies
for people who don't actually play video games, you Black folk sure love to complain about them
>some silly N64 mememod no one would have played gets canceled
>one thread with 30 replies
Fixed it for you.
>the same game but shittier graphics
For what purpose
I couldn't even get the rom to work. It just gave me Fatal Error
Yes, just like they ruined videogames with loot boxes.
Frick Valve, I buy all my games cheaper from grey markets, they won't get 30% of my money
Any dumb frick can fill DMCA because nobody ever check if is legit.
Whole process is automated.
who the hell even want to play that anyways?
Valve has an unfathomable amount of people who literally worship them, It's crazy.
People are rightfully frothing at the mouth about the whole Crapcom putting DRM in old titles, but don't you DARE mention the fact that Steam forces you to update your games no matter what if you want to play them, but they don't even let you archive earlier verisons of the game YOU installed unlike GOG.
If you do, you'll get legions of Valve fanboys jumping down your throat because "poor multi-billion dollar company can't handle support tickets from people playing old games ;( ;("
I’ve always supported companies taking down fan “games”
still not as dumb as when valve removed dolphin from steam
the truth is no one would have said anything if the moron would not have gotten on the high horse
