Nintendo is Astrosurfed

Nintendo and their games are astrosurfed. They're never seen in the same light as nor put on the same level as others in the larger gaming world like Capcom and Fromsoft, despite the high reviews most of their titles get. See for example, TOTK vs Elden Ring. Despite it being one of the most highly reviewed games of the decade, TOTK discussion and reverence have died down tremendously. Most who played it and rated it so highly were Staunch Nintendo fans and more casual players. Elden Ring, while having the same metascore and high reviews, received much more discussion to this very day, is still widely loved, loved by basically all of the gaming world, and it's DLC is one of the most anticipated things in gaming for the past 2 years.

Another more recent example is Super Mario Wonder. Despite all the high reviews and praise, it was forgotten immediately. Practically FOTM. When it was nominated for player's choice GOTY at the Game Awards voted by fans, it was one of the first voted out. I feel that Nintendo and their products get by on the company's legacy and nostalgia-attachment many have for them, rather than the actual quality of the products.

Mario Wonder sold over 10 million copies
Alan Wake 2 barely sold over 3m.

You don't know what astroturfing is. People do play Nintendo games, but only Nintendo fans play Nintendo games.

how the frick is Horizon their best selling game ever? Since when? What?

        Anonymous

The literal reason is that there are more people buying games now then ever.

The other real reason is Horizon was bundled with everything Sony sold. A Wii sports/Super Mario World situation.

They aren't astroturfed they are just the go-to brand for people with autism on account of their Colorful and Easily Understood characters and settings.
And like it or not the internet was established mainly by autists and they shaped the perception of nerd shit even if its not actually true i the mainstream.

I think the main reason Switch games get praised (other than nostalgia) is because as a handheld system the quality of Switch games are really good. I never use my Switch portably so as a home console the Switch has been pretty mediocre in my opinion.

      Anonymous

That makes absolutely no sense. The game doesn't change in any significant manner if you play it docked or not.

It does for me actually. I don't find "boring stuff" all that boring if it's on a handheld for some reason. I'd never play a JRPG on my computer, but on a handheld they are comfy.
Another example: in Monster Hunter 4 on 3DS, I went and mined ores / gathered herbs from time to time, whenever I felt like it. I played Monster Hunter Rise on PC, I ran out of money and went mining so I could sell ores. I was bored to tears after ten minutes.

So how long is the "single player game that can be beaten in 20 hours is forgotten in a month" meme going to go on. Do people not realize that is normal and healthy to beat a game, be satisfied, and move on?

Should it take 6 years and a bloated budget to make a pump and dump single player game?

I understand that you're saying but I don't think it's completely inappropriate to show how some games are discussed for way less longer than other games. This is most obvious when comparing games from the same series. For example, BOTW was still frequently discussed all the way up to 2022, but now we are only a year after TOTK's release yet it seems it gets less threads after a year than BOTW would get after 5 years.

Botw threads were just a handful of autists spamming a handful of webms and people responding to the bait to call them moronic.

Totk kind of killed botw threads as well. It kind of just capped off things by being good but not killing the criticisms of the first game, and being successful but not the most successful thing ever.

        I still have 200+ hours.

For a game to have discussion you need something to argue over. Empire vs Stormcloaks, whether or not edelgard was right, portal a vs b, something.

        >For example, BOTW was still frequently discussed all the way up to 2022
Botw discussion died not too long after the last dlc, then totk became the point of discussion from 2019 to now since that's when it was revealed and became the main discussion point.

calling Nintendo games that when most of their titles end up being evergreen and continue to sell for months and years after release without a price drop instead of the frontloaded and then bargain bin sells from the rest of the industry, what a terrible post OP jesus christ.

That's because 90% of Nintendo titles are literally talored towards babies. Metroid is literally their only mature title and even it is heavily sanitized so not to offend peoples senses. Holding it up against something like Elden Ring would be like comparing a children toy workbench to the real thing

The games you mentioned are not discussed because they are too simple. There's not much to say about Zelda TOTK, it's a very sandboxy game and it's not even very good in that sense, it's a sandbox with no depth. Mario Wonder is an excellent platformer, but it has 3 or 4 really difficult levels and the rest is just a walk in the park for casual players, an experience that you finish in 5 hours (any %) and don't have many reasons to play again.
Some Nintendo games have a certain depth, like Smash, and people still talk about them for years.

this has been obvious for years to anyone with eyes and ears. their games have been low quality with the N64 being their last highpoint. TOTK shows all you have to do is put Zelda on the box and people will flock to it. They took six years to make a Madden Tier sequel to BOTW. Embarrassing.
