It's not the weeby, japanese part, it's that it's a, competitive, newish multiplayer series whose sequel got one of the best DLCs to ever exist and the great music that goes with the game as well. It's also more than just functional, it's ability to work EXTREMELY well with the already-superior-to-stick-aiming gyro control for fine tuning shots is fantastic as well. The fact that there is no other multiplayer game close to this that's an exclusive for Nintendo PLUS all the other factors discussed is why its king. The crazy part though is how beloved it is outside of the nintendo scene as well.
Give it 10 more years, nearly everyone will praise and look back at the beginning of Splatoon fondly while our thoughts die out and they'll be the de facto correct ones. I mean I think they're correct now.
