This is the longest Nintendo gen ever. This feels like the PS3/360 era all over again because Microsoft and Sony just refused to come out with new consoles for the longest time.

The more popular the console, the more 3rd party games, but they don't care about 3rd party games because the only times Nintendo had good 3rd party support before this were the NES, SNES, and Wii and the Wii 3rd party support was mostly shovelware. Hating on anime games is the tendie version of wanting normalgays out, plus some of the really schizo diehards still hold a grudge about companies like Square abandoning Nintendo in the past.

That makes sense. Catering to their base and gamers in general vs trying to appeal to casuals. Once all the gamers have the console, the only thing they can do is start to target the casuals and non gamers if they want to sell more consoles. It ends up becoming a victim of it's own success and can start pushing gamers away if they continue down that path. That's what fricked up Xbox, the late 360 and Xbox One did exactly that and Sony is seemingly alienating their long time fans and gamers in general now so people started moving to PC/Switch.
All the consoles have gone through a sort of ebb and flow on how much they want to appeal to "gamers" versus "everyone". You now remember that weird period where Xbox was trying to be a media center and showed off a car at E3 for some reason. Nintendo has a habit of returning to their base sooner rather than later, but even they don't deserve unconditional trust.
Things have gotten particularly bad lately because in AAA, there is an inherent assumption that people WILL buy the game when it is made, and the worry is more over "losing" potential customers than attracting them. The meteoric popularity of video games in general means they're essentially too big to fail; consumers will buy the big releases so long as they're advertised appropriately and don't make the consumers feel too bad about themselves.
Hating on (popular console) because it gets a lot of shovelware is this board's most moronic take. Just don't buy Dispicable Me: The Official Game, shit games are always going to exist but you can simply not buy them.

They don't even process that the games they're playing share a genre with anything else. They know, on paper, the games are "RPGs", but their ability to see outside of their bubble of "primary Nintendo properties" blinds them to what the genre actually means.
Pokemon in particular is a fantastic example because almost all the praise you can give the latest games requires you to only know Pokemon and not where Pokemon sits relative other RPGs. The strengths it used to leverage to give it an identity and a niche against other games considered its competition have been abandoned in favor of fulfilling the general idea of what Pokemon is, in abstract.
Nintendo fans think Nintendo invented the life sim with Animal Crossing. It's not exclusive to Pokemon
