This narrative is only true for non-Switch games on Playstation that need to become multiplat with every other platform in addition to be worldwide, because both the PS4 and PS5 are dead there.

This is entirely Sony's fault for allowing their PlayStation division to flip the bird at Japan at every turn. PS would still be selling games in Japan right now if they hadn't gone out of their fricking way to spite the market.

It's less that it's good nintendo's taking over and more that it's good a more console like device is shifting units again.
The only thing that sold decently there in the last 10 years was the 3ds, so devs had to choose between setting a performance target not dissimilar to a PSP, or making their game on a significantly less popular console like the ps4 or vita, and risk not selling enough copies to make back the investment on big graphics, so they took less risks or aimed at western audiences from the start.
Now maybe they can go back to making shit just for themselves and taking risks on western reception or development costs. That or they're already too far gone now and we can enevr go back, but i'm gonna be optimistic. Monster hunter rise was good.
