Nintendo64 Thread

Everything N64-related here (buying, emulating, game discussion, etc..)
I for one I'm looking forward for all the upcoming romhacks that are console-compatible (Return to Yoshi's Island 64, Dinosaur Planet Restoration Project, Smash Remix, Amped Up, Star Fox Conquest, etc...)

How far has the Dinosaur Planet Restoration Project gone? I haven't check on the game since it's initial leak.

they're making a lot of progress, still buggy and incomplete but its looking promising.

        Anonymous

Are most of the progression flag bugs fixed or corrected? I only bothered to play the game until certain events stopped triggering for whatever reason, even going back and replaying it in the right order as others to make sure I could see most of the content that was there.

        Anonymous

I'm going to hold off another year. I've heard it's still fairly buggy and I'd hate to get into it only to have to stop.

The N64 homebrew/romhacking community is awesome. Recently downloaded a starfox 64 randomizer and it adds some nice features such as boss rush mode and level select. The random dialog options are hilarious at times too.

Smash remix is really neat. I hope they add banjo soon.

Mario kart amped up is a promising mod too.

I hope someday custom content comes out for jet force gemini. I know there were some unused enemy types and some levels as well so I think some cool custom content could be possible. Not likely though.

This. I would like to see mods for more obscure games too. Making stuff like Superman 64 better would blow the library open.

Somebody should decompile Bomberman Hero and optimize it to run without slowdowns. The game doe not render many polygons, yet its framerate is too unstable.

There's always Pokemon Snap and Pokemon Stadium to scratch that itch for you. A straight up remake of Gen 1 would've been boring to play through right after the GameBoy games.

I'd love to see what an N64 adaption of gen 1/2 would look like. Stadium's battle arenas as well as Snap's maps were pretty neat.

If they were actually going to do pokemon in that gen I believe the camera would be more like the one from Ocarina of Time

OOTs camera was pretty complex at the time. I doubt gamefreak would have been able to program something like it.

It might be possible, iirc jet force runs on a modified diddy kong racing/mickey speedway engine and those games already have modding tools.

DO NOT THROW IT AWAY. Keep it in a drawer or something. Very few games [forget which] don't work correctly with the expansion pak.

Is there a final solution to the joystick question?

Lubricate any good sticks you have. Kitsch bent replacements (i replaced the bowl, stick, and gears because every piece wears down) are pretty good depending on your levels of autism.

I bought this adapter plus the N64 switch controller https://a.co/d/bPOJkPx

Apparently the Switch controller for N64 is analog not optical but it didn't make any difference to me.

The Switch N64 controller can't take expansion packs because it has built in rumble where the pak goes. However, the Bluetooth adapter I linked has a slot. Some weird trivia.

      1. The Switch controller will only rumble if you insert an actual rumble pak into the adapter. BUT, the rumble pak doesn't need batteries (if you put batteries in its going to shake and rumble the BT adapter across the table)
      2. Memory card works. Did a quest 64 playthrough on it
      3. Gameboy pak works. Did Stadium 1 and 2 on it

      Anonymous

I could have sworn kitsch-bent was still selling replacement parts if you want to tear down the joystick housing. I've tried some of those retrobox replacement joystick assemblies before too, but they're not the right shape to close the controller back together and both the N64 and Gamecube versions show far less precision than a GCN controller plugged in to a ralphnet adapter.

If you guys have a flash cart and like playing gen 1 and 2 pokemon I highly recommend getting the Dev menu patch for stadium 2.
You can even use it to set the flag to activate the celibi event in crystal.
It is a shame repo carts don't work with the stadium games as a rule.

I'm telling you that you can. I have done it, stadium 2 comes with a hex save editor in the debug menu.
        https://tcrf.net/Pok%C3%A9mon_Crystal
        Check the gs ball event.
I'm going to guess more people have a flash cart and transfer pack as compared to those old game genies or the save dumpers.
Speaking of there is a save dumper program home brew too.

That dude is doing awesome work. Can't wait to play the update.

playing casltevania. so far its not as horrible as most people made it out to be but i do have some complaints:

      >infinite spawning enemies spawn a little to frequently
      >camera sometimes isn't great
      >pressing a button to pick up items seems odd but it keeps me from accidently pick up a sub weapon i don't want
      >why are the hearts replaced with israeliteels?

but aside from that its been fun so far. can see why there has been a recent spur of people defending them game.

It's not perfect, but it's a solid game. A lot of people that hate it are Metroidvania purists who call it a lost effort. Still haven't played the sequel but everyone says it's a lot better

For folks looking for a good aftermarket controller, The Brawler 64 is pretty good. it's comfy, lightweight and the stick doesn't feel like it's going to wear out after two uses.

Has anyone worked out how to get Goldeneye to run at 30fps+ in multiplayer? Ive tried to re-play that shit but its a slideshow. Either overclocking the N64 or optimizing the game like that Mario autist KaZe.

Anyone who HAS overclocked their N64.. did it improve anything? Did it break any game timings?

Kaze could do all the improvements on the Mario 64 engine thanks to the decompilation of the game letting him access the source code, I can't remember if Goldeneye has a project like that going on.

The N64 is a gaping hole in my knowledge of that gen of systems. My friend had a Saturn, I had a PS1, and later my friend got a Dreamcast when I got a PS2.
All I know about the N64 is Smash Bros, Mario 64, Pokemon Snap, Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time, and Mario Kart 64– because I played them at McDonald’s and Target occasionally, and had a few ports on my (3)DS later on.

What are some fun singleplayer games for the system? is it still worth picking one up with a flashcart if you don’t have nostalgia for the games?

depends on what genre you like, the n64 obviously lacks sidescrollers, rpgs, shmups and japanese "hidden gems" outside of some noteworthy games but has a good amount of 3d Platformers, racing games and FPS
Some you might like that aren't the usual Nintendo and Rare titles:
      Goemon's Great Adventure (2D Platformer)
      Mischief Makers (2D Platformer)
Hybrid Heaven (RPG with wrestling elements)
      Shadowgate 64 (First-person Adventure)
      Shiren the Wanderer 2 (RPG)
      Project Wonder J2 (Raising Sim)
WinBack Covert Operations (Third-Person Shooter, has a ps2 port but I prefer the 64 version)
      Body Harvest (Action-Adventure)
Rocket: Robot on Wheels (3D Collectathon)
      Sin and Punishment (On-Rails Shooter)
Star Wars Rouge Squadron (Flight-Action, there's a pc port but iirc it might not work on modern systems)
      Robotron 64 (Arcade shooter)
      >is it worth picking up a flashcart?
depends if you actually wanna go through what the N64 offers, this includes the Nintendo and Rare games, games that have modern ports like Turok, Duke64 or Doom 64 along some other titles that are quite polarizing amonst fans (DK64, Castlevania 64, etc...) or the racing games (which imo the system excels at).

the steam version works very well actually just make sure you install dgvoodoo2 and use a controller. however there is an issue with the camera but you can just change the view once and it will be fixed.

Thanks, list looks interesting. I love arcade games, I know the N64 doesn’t have shmups or sidescrollers, but how about other fast paced games? Racing games are fun, especially arcadey racing games, so I’ll take suggestions there too. I saw Road Rash mentioned in this thread and had no idea it got a full 3D game until now.

F-Zero X is probably the fastest racer in the console, also runs at 60fps.
Extreme-G and Star Wars Racer are also solid racing games but they don't run at 60fps like F-Zero X does, I also like AeroGauge but not many are fond of it.
If you want more arcade-y racers, Cruis'n World is really good, Beetle Adventure Racing is also really good, Rush 2 is also great and quite challenging, Off-Road Challenge and California Speed are mindless fun, Hydro Thunder is really fun though there's a DC version which probably is better, MRC and Rally Challenge 2000 aren't anything special but I had my fun with them.
Other "arcade" experiences would be Asteroids Hyper 64, Space Invaders 64, Bangai-O, Knife Edge Nose Gunner, Star Soldier Vanishing Earth, Dezaemon 3D and obviously, Star Fox 64.

      >What are some fun singleplayer games for the system? is it still worth picking one up with a flashcart if you don’t have nostalgia for the games?
      Debatable.
I really think you should just get the full romset and browse through them on an emulator before you make that decision.
I for one have many fond memories of the n64 and still enjoy playing its games to this day. But I only got a console + everdrive because I wanted to play some console romhacks on the couch instead of on my PC.

People jizz all over stuff like Pokemon Snap and Zelda but those games always bored me. Mario 64 is a certified classic and should be 100% by every gamer. Mario Kart 64 is objectively the worst in the franchise but also somehow the best. Smashgays hate Smash64 but I personally like how slow and kinda surreal the game is. GoldenEye is complete dogshit and there are so many other versions of it to play out there.

Mario Party 2 & 3 are incredibly fun with friends, but even that's only because of nostalgia I think.

          >objectively
Rubberbanding is insanely bad. Ugly sprites. Fewest tracks. Fewest powerups. Fewest drivers. etc.
And before you say it, no one actually plays SMK.

            >no one actually plays SMK

Absolute NPC tier opinion, but okay.
That's like implying all the emulation done in this board and emulation filter discussions are some sort of hoax. People still play the older entries in many franchises, you're just an NPC homosexual.

And for everything you mentioned...Mario Kart Super Circuit is even worse in all of those aspects, Mario Kart 64 Is pretty good and can be fun to play with friends too.

rubberbanding is annoying but if you get good at the game the cpus are a cakewalk because they don't spam items like in later games (not to mention how fricking obnoxious they became from DD and onwards), also almost every track in the game is memorable, same with the roster (for sure i don't need shit like the babies or every koopaling being a slot).
The only problem 64 has imo is the lack of modes like a Vs. CPU, CPU Battle or Staff Ghosts in every track, and I guess the balance favoring lightweights over everyone.

Though i probably wont make this a side business, not sure why, just not that confident in my work.

Anyone have a link to a translated animal forest rom that works?

I tried the one on archive.com and it glitches out everytime I try to load a save file from it, but the translation is better than some other roms I've seen (another rom I tried doesn't translate any of the villager dialog).

Nevermind found out there is a cheat that makes the rom skip checking for a corrupt save so it worked on the archive.org rom.

This is the everdrive cheat code in case anyone searches this on the archive or something.

Is there way to get better framerate on n64? Would change of old thermal paste to newer make improvements, and also getting rid of possible dust (if there is any) inside the console?

And what of picture quality and latency? About half a year ago I got myself a retrotink's 2x mini , I tried both on "old" sony flat tv, and on my pc monitor, but I feel not only the image quality wasn't really better from regular video method (forgot which one I had before the mini), but the latency was still there, even with analog->digital pipeline removed from TV, the latency was noticeable (or maybe it's the dogshit fps of goldeneye) because the game was unbearable even on my PC monitor. After missing lock shots on dam couple of times too many, I just gave up.

      overclock your n64

      Anonymous

there's no way unless someone makes a romhack to improve performance (like what kaze is doing with mario 64), overclocking the n64 makes the games go faster but not in the "better performance" way, think of it as a pseudo fast-forward, it can also damage the console so don't do that.
      >picture quality
get s-video or mod your console for component/hdmi output, if you have a flashcart you can use the deblur patcher on your roms and make the game look better on hd screens.
      >latency
Goldeneye 007 can eat inputs if the framerate is too low (usually when there's too much shit happening), iirc only Statue and Jungle had very low framerate overall.

        >if you have a flashcart you can use the deblur patcher on your roms and make the game look better on hd screens.
Can someone explain how the aps/ips stuff on everdrive works? Which one do you use and how does it know which game to use it for? is there a patch pack that has all the blur and shit setting removed from all games to download?

          Anonymous

i use saturnu's u64aap patcher and its as easy as dragging the rom to the u64aap executable, the only game i couldn't deblur was Conker's BFD.

for refenrence, couple of months ago I got 2 tb hdd for my xbox, and the image quality on my xbox is just so much better, and so is framerate. now i know it's not fair cause it's newer generation, and the textures aren't as compressed. but i mean it's with regular xbox cable, no gimmick no hdmi nothing special, "it just works", I was so surprised at the image quality.

        Thank you for the information.

just search on ebay and check Completed + Sold to see what you will get. I would keep the N64, controller and GB adapter, sell the games and get a flashcart.

Why don't you play them anymore? Get three others and make a night of it, it's really fun. You can also play tons of cool rom hacks, and even run the original development tech demos that were leaked.

        >implying i have friends
More seriously, I think i have been spoiled by the new technology, controls seem so stiff in older games, fov is too short... I tried to play them a bit now to see if they were still working, and everything is just too bizarre.

The only game i regret not being able to experience whole is aidyn chronicle, which was quite mindblowing to young me.

How can I fix crackling audio on m64p in linux?

      Anonymous

Good question. IIRC on the mainline version (the one without a GUI) you could mess with the audio buffer settings in mupen64plus.cfg, but they're nowhere to be seen on m64p. Maybe try the RetroArch version if all else fails, as good audio sync is supposed to be one of its strong points.

        Anonymous

Well, for the time being, Rosalie's mupen gui is working wonderfully, aside from changing the parallel settings, and switching the cpu emulation between certain games. Much preferable, compared to the audio problems. Could never get myself to care much for Retroarch, even after using f5 for the desktop overlay. The Duckstation fiasco doesn't help either.
