Having never played the original, attempting and dropping Remake it convinced me I never should. So far I’ve played the first Final Fantasy and IX (in that order) but now I am done with the franchise.
I don't think this game will flop, but I don't think it's going to be a huge hit either. By most metrics the first game underperformed, and there's dramatically less hype for Rebirth. I don't think there's anyone under the age of 35 who's genuinely excited about it.
The original is almost 30 years old at this point, and simply isn't a canonical text for the majority of active gamers. I played Remake and enjoyed it for what it was, but it wasn't good enough to earn a fanbase on its own merits. Whether these games interest you is wholly dependent on whether you have any nostalgia for the original, and/or your broader appetite for cinematic Sonyslop.

Dyne (narativelly) finctions as warning to Barret to the path he risks going down to if hatered towards Shinra is his reason for fighting them, rather than creating a future for his new family (which Dyne has cast away)
If he became crazy from Jenova cells then Dyne has no agency and therefore Barret was never at risk of going down that same
i felt this way when i found out in Dirge of Cerberus that Hojo was responsible for 99% of the monsters you fight in the overworld.

Most "great" multimedia stories from big companies are total fricking accidents that sprang from the coincidental combination of people and limitations on a project.
When dipshit fans and execs see a "great" story in said product, they turn around and go "THIS SINGULAR PERSON ON THE TEAM MUST BE A GENIUS LET HIM DO WHATEVER HE WANTS"
And then he puts out gigantic turds with full creative control.
FFVII was good for the same reason PT was good. Financially illiterate nerds trying to take cheap shots at their bosses who were maybe rightfully mad at them for burning money.
The big four devs heading this up (Kitase, Nomura, Nojima, Toriyama - Hamaguchi joined way later and can't be blamed) have downplayed the contributions of Sakaguchi, Takahashi, Soraya and others to the original game in interviews. It was all a happy accident which they don't truly understand.
VIIs dark and unusual plot originated from the Xenogears script that was sanitized and modified into FF7. FF8 was the game these devs made from scratch, and we can see how that turned out (it's also why Remake is increasingly FF8-ified with timey shit).
FF VIII's translation was mostly fine, but it did really mess up Ultimecia. It rewrote the Edea speech to make her sound more like a generic villain and removed and obscured stuff from the original Japanese speech that gave a little bit of insight into why Ultimecia was so pissy. And it removed a bit of Ultimecia's dialogue at the end describing the effects of being absorbed into the "algorithm of time compression" which left English fans scratching their heads over what was happening to Squall. Those were the biggest issues with the story translation though. There's a few other things you could talk about like the whatevers and that one scene between Squall and Rinoa that was a total rewrite and one small mistranslation when Rinoa implied that she was still romantically attracted to Seifer whereas in Japanese she was confirming that that was no longer the case.

Square Enix is a major Unreal partner so they have no excuse, they could have ported the game to UE5 and used Temporal Super Resolution to address the image clarity issues. Seriously this is the ONE GOOD thing about Unreal Engine.

I don't think this game will flop, but I don't think it's going to be a huge hit either. By most metrics the first game underperformed, and there's dramatically less hype for Rebirth. I don't think there's anyone under the age of 35 who's genuinely excited about it.
The original is almost 30 years old at this point, and simply isn't a canonical text for the majority of active gamers. I played Remake and enjoyed it for what it was, but it wasn't good enough to earn a fanbase on its own merits. Whether these games interest you is wholly dependent on whether you have any nostalgia for the original, and/or your broader appetite for cinematic Sonyslop.
I fricking called that this shit would flop after the abortion that was the original's rape of the story. When they post the numbers and admit during sales calls that it underperformed everyone is going to point to EVERYTHING other than the game just being wildly inconsistent Advent Children bullshit that fricking no one wanted. All they had to do was faithfully recreate the original game as well as they faithfully recreated the character models, and they would have had a money printer on their hands. So the third and final game of the """Remake""" trilogy will cover discs 2 and 3 of the original game...assuming they even put the original final dungeon in FF7R.

The worst thing is they managed to give me hope. FF XIII killed my interest in FF, and I initially wasn't interested in VII Remake. I didn't really think it needed a remake anyway, just a retranslation and even that's not important to me anymore since I learned to read Japanese a long time ago. Would still be nice for fans who can't. Anyway, I figured SE would just frick the remake up. But the more they showed of it, the more it actually looked good. I was confused and kept telling myself "They'll frick it up somehow" but goddamn it, it looked fairly well down and in spite of myself, I started to become interested in it. Then I played it and yeah, I had fun with the gameplay, but everything they did with the story was awful and I'm mad at myself for allowing them to hoodwink me when I was on the right track by just ignoring it at first.

They actually showed Sephiroth killing the snake? Is there some sort of contract with the actor where they have to have a certain percentage of screentime? This kills all mystery of Sephiroth which is what this game seems intent on doing for the entirety of it.

The big four devs heading this up (Kitase, Nomura, Nojima, Toriyama - Hamaguchi joined way later and can't be blamed) have downplayed the contributions of Sakaguchi, Takahashi, Soraya and others to the original game in interviews. It was all a happy accident which they don't truly understand.
VIIs dark and unusual plot originated from the Xenogears script that was sanitized and modified into FF7. FF8 was the game these devs made from scratch, and we can see how that turned out (it's also why Remake is increasingly FF8-ified with timey shit).
Don't compare it with FFVIII, it was much better than this shit not to mention it was screwed over by translation
FF VIII's translation was mostly fine, but it did really mess up Ultimecia. It rewrote the Edea speech to make her sound more like a generic villain and removed and obscured stuff from the original Japanese speech that gave a little bit of insight into why Ultimecia was so pissy. And it removed a bit of Ultimecia's dialogue at the end describing the effects of being absorbed into the "algorithm of time compression" which left English fans scratching their heads over what was happening to Squall. Those were the biggest issues with the story translation though. There's a few other things you could talk about like the whatevers and that one scene between Squall and Rinoa that was a total rewrite and one small mistranslation when Rinoa implied that she was still romantically attracted to Seifer whereas in Japanese she was confirming that that was no longer the case.

I like my headcanon of Crisis Core with all of the shit removed. The ending with the never ending Shinra army + the glitching roulette wheel as Zack starts to die is actually a really effective integration of gameplay and story.

I don't think this game will flop, but I don't think it's going to be a huge hit either. By most metrics the first game underperformed, and there's dramatically less hype for Rebirth. I don't think there's anyone under the age of 35 who's genuinely excited about it.
The original is almost 30 years old at this point, and simply isn't a canonical text for the majority of active gamers. I played Remake and enjoyed it for what it was, but it wasn't good enough to earn a fanbase on its own merits. Whether these games interest you is wholly dependent on whether you have any nostalgia for the original, and/or your broader appetite for cinematic Sonyslop.
My problem is that they KNEW what people wanted.

The original FF7 was 3 discs, though disc 3 was basically just the final dungeon.
Remake (FF7R part 1) covers the opening town from disc 1 of FF7, so ~6 hours stretched out to 30 hours.
Rebirth (FF7R part 2) covers the rest of disc 1 of FF7.
So the third and final game of the """Remake""" trilogy will cover discs 2 and 3 of the original game...assuming they even put the original final dungeon in FF7R.

I don't mind the OG graphics and will stick with them forever, but some of that looks pretty neat. I like that it uses touched up chibi models for non combat instead of the out of place more realistically proportioned models that some use.

The worst thing is they managed to give me hope. FF XIII killed my interest in FF, and I initially wasn't interested in VII Remake. I didn't really think it needed a remake anyway, just a retranslation and even that's not important to me anymore since I learned to read Japanese a long time ago. Would still be nice for fans who can't. Anyway, I figured SE would just frick the remake up. But the more they showed of it, the more it actually looked good. I was confused and kept telling myself "They'll frick it up somehow" but goddamn it, it looked fairly well down and in spite of myself, I started to become interested in it. Then I played it and yeah, I had fun with the gameplay, but everything they did with the story was awful and I'm mad at myself for allowing them to hoodwink me when I was on the right track by just ignoring it at first.
