It's actually become astounding to me just how hard XIV mistreats it's female characters. I hadn't noticed until recently, mostly I thought of just how every female character got killed or forced to retire and barely ever appear again while male characters always get to become frequently recurring characters, if not straight up get upgraded to main character with barely any merit. But it's also dawned on me these patches just how ridiculously pig-headed the writers are on making sure Y'shtola will never, ever have protagonism of any kind, even as every single plot point in a story can be summarized as "Only Y'shtola can solve this". Doesn't matter, the instant she's done, shove her back into a locker. For every line of dialogue she speaks, make sure the next expansion she's missing for that many quests longer than every other Scion.
Once a week you can take love interests on dates that fit their personalites and the shit they're into and have little conversations.

Hell, another clear example, we go to Garlemald in EW, and fight a very high rank, reputed and feared general woman. The moment we beat her, she effectively stops existing. We don't see her get cured of tempering, we don't see her reaction to her entire country falling apart, nobody defers to her as the next biggest authority that can have a say in what happens next. Jullus, the low rank officer who has no real say with his troops though? Pretty much the new face of Garlemald and a constant presence since the moment he was introduced.
She appears in the role quest for getting at least one of each role to 90 and doing the quests. I can't remember what she says though. Also, two things; One, that'd be lame for some random npc we have no dialogue with who may as well have had no history prior to that point(Though maybe she did get lore and I just forgot). Two, that's just an issue with nobody outside of the scions really mattering(With a very select few exceptions), which is where all the issues come from in my opinion.

Proposal: instead of raids dropping gear for each individual tier, instead it drops upgrade tokens for the job AF gears which will continue upgrading through each raid tier released for that expansion similar to how relic upgrades work. The gear will feature stat customization and perhaps even set bonuses upon tier the completion of a tier.

Upgrading individual gearsets could work but not with these devs. It'd take you 10 weeks of spending all your resources on that one job to get it maxed out with how these guys like to drip feed your upgrades. At least when I make a set for one job, it'll work with at least one other job rn.

Do you consider actual, legitimately good writing regardless of medium standards good? Then it never gets good and you should stop playing.
Do you consider the storylines of any of the single player FF games good? When the big player boom happened, we were already on the Shadowbringers post-patch cycles. All those new players had a base game and several expansions to get to. By the time they were all caught up they had 4-5 months until Endwalker but also had multiple expansions of completed side content to frick around in so they didn't even notice.
Now they're just experiencing what everyone else experienced in every other expansion when they were fresh and new.
I started playing when Shadowbringers was complete but Endwalker had not come out yet and I will say there were way more people playing at the time I started between expansions than there are now.
I don't think the game is anywhere near dying but I think it's glory days are long behind it and I don't think you're going to see half the level of interest or player influx with the launch of Dawntrail as you did with Endwalker.

I worked with a guy who just got fired a dew days ago who plays FFXIV and once he realized I play it he wouldn't shut up about it anytime he had an opportunity to talk to me about it. He has 16 alts across 2 data centers for some reason and apparently plays all of them regularly.
The only reason I can think of is if you want to change your look periodically but don't want to waste money on fantasias. Like I know one person who in the year I have known him has fantasia'd between roe and hroth at least once or twice a month. If he just made one an alt he would save himself a lot of money. Of course you'd have to unlock everything again which feels like more trouble than it's worth.

Fracture was MNKs highest potency attack when you couldn't hit a positional. But you absolutely would run out of tp if you kept it up 100% of the time. It was basically just something you did during burst windows and when you had to stack infront of the boss.

How would I even tell what this patch 3.3 content is? But whatever, I don't have the game. Playing triple triad, fishing, waiting forever to get a dungeon run going, it's all pretty chill. Frankly my main deciding factor to see if I actually buy the game is if I can even run it after the graphical update. I already get slowdowns when there's a lot of shit going on, or when doing those leap of faith events in the saucer. I don't want to pay 60+ bucks only for then be unable to play the game.

I started XIV with the Shadowbringers (more like anti-blizzard streamer) hype.

The people you should avoid are those who speak in faux-apathetic lowercaps at all times. To be clear, I'm not talking about people who speak without grammar in game in order to get their messages out faster. I'm talking about those who sit down to compose an image board post with all the time in the world and willfully choose to omit punctuation and capitalization. They are not doing this to save time. In fact, they may take additional time to redact habitual grammar from their posts.
Their motivation for this style of posting is simple. They are trying to present an aura of apathy. They want to communicate: "I don't care about anything, least of all the rules of grammar." The reason they work so hard to cultivate this image of emotional invulnerability is because they are, in actual fact, extremely emotional and unstable people. If you become close to them you will catch glimpses of the volatility lurking beneath their patchwork mask of cool indifference. The lowercaps poster will silently catalog transgressions you have in its eyes committed. You will only become aware of them during the rare tantrum blowups that characterize these people. They must be avoided for your own good. The faux-apathetic lowercaps posters really could not be more pathetic.
I have no idea what Jaina's powerlevel is, but I assume it is ridiculous since WoW's stakes are stupidly high and no one outside the WoL really shines. Though I would say she is tied with Estinien in competency and at least can keep up with the WoL.

Because DT is just going to be Stormblood 2.0. A filler arc about a far away nation only heard about in passing that no one cares about and the only stakes in the story are regarding said nation that no one cares about. Except in Stormblood at least there were main characters you had long since known who were directly involved in said stakes (i.e. Raubann, Lyse). This time its just some random new character you don't know and have no reason to care about showing up out of the blue and saying "will you help me mr mary sue of this story?" and you saying "yes I will complete stranger because I'm bored exdee!"

i disagree that he thought we were azem's shards till that point. its entirely plausible that his plan was exactly what he said it was regardless of who we were, including him trying to speech check us after il mheg. wouldn't he have tried to 'awaken' azem in us with more direct methods like how other convocation members have their memories restored?

It's actually become astounding to me just how hard XIV mistreats it's female characters. I hadn't noticed until recently, mostly I thought of just how every female character got killed or forced to retire and barely ever appear again while male characters always get to become frequently recurring characters, if not straight up get upgraded to main character with barely any merit. But it's also dawned on me these patches just how ridiculously pig-headed the writers are on making sure Y'shtola will never, ever have protagonism of any kind, even as every single plot point in a story can be summarized as "Only Y'shtola can solve this". Doesn't matter, the instant she's done, shove her back into a locker. For every line of dialogue she speaks, make sure the next expansion she's missing for that many quests longer than every other Scion.
Why are Y'shtolagays like this? Biggest victim complex of any charactergays despite Y'shtola being by far the most prominent female character for the game.

And the thing is that Yshtola is just the main example because she's about the only female that isn't one of the above to stick around. All others aren't mentioned because the plot has left them behind.

Hell, another clear example, we go to Garlemald in EW, and fight a very high rank, reputed and feared general woman. The moment we beat her, she effectively stops existing. We don't see her get cured of tempering, we don't see her reaction to her entire country falling apart, nobody defers to her as the next biggest authority that can have a say in what happens next. Jullus, the low rank officer who has no real say with his troops though? Pretty much the new face of Garlemald and a constant presence since the moment he was introduced.
She appears in the role quest for getting at least one of each role to 90 and doing the quests. I can't remember what she says though. Also, two things; One, that'd be lame for some random npc we have no dialogue with who may as well have had no history prior to that point(Though maybe she did get lore and I just forgot). Two, that's just an issue with nobody outside of the scions really mattering(With a very select few exceptions), which is where all the issues come from in my opinion.

Proposal: instead of raids dropping gear for each individual tier, instead it drops upgrade tokens for the job AF gears which will continue upgrading through each raid tier released for that expansion similar to how relic upgrades work. The gear will feature stat customization and perhaps even set bonuses upon tier the completion of a tier.
Bad because that sounds like a reason to give us even less gear designs. Just one AF design and that's it. Boring.

My advice and the advice I give everyone really is to hold on until patch 3.3, which is the "true ending" of HW. If by then you still think it's not worth it, quit.
There's good chances the game will get you before then though. You've basically just beaten the tutorial. It's just the ARR post patches that are unbearably slow.

When the big player boom happened, we were already on the Shadowbringers post-patch cycles. All those new players had a base game and several expansions to get to. By the time they were all caught up they had 4-5 months until Endwalker but also had multiple expansions of completed side content to frick around in so they didn't even notice.
Now they're just experiencing what everyone else experienced in every other expansion when they were fresh and new.
I started playing when Shadowbringers was complete but Endwalker had not come out yet and I will say there were way more people playing at the time I started between expansions than there are now.
I don't think the game is anywhere near dying but I think it's glory days are long behind it and I don't think you're going to see half the level of interest or player influx with the launch of Dawntrail as you did with Endwalker.

I worked with a guy who just got fired a dew days ago who plays FFXIV and once he realized I play it he wouldn't shut up about it anytime he had an opportunity to talk to me about it. He has 16 alts across 2 data centers for some reason and apparently plays all of them regularly.
The only reason I can think of is if you want to change your look periodically but don't want to waste money on fantasias. Like I know one person who in the year I have known him has fantasia'd between roe and hroth at least once or twice a month. If he just made one an alt he would save himself a lot of money. Of course you'd have to unlock everything again which feels like more trouble than it's worth.
And if he buys the adventure guide thingies in the shop to skip story, then he'd only spend more than just buying a set of Fantasia once in a while.

i disagree that he thought we were azem's shards till that point. its entirely plausible that his plan was exactly what he said it was regardless of who we were, including him trying to speech check us after il mheg. wouldn't he have tried to 'awaken' azem in us with more direct methods like how other convocation members have their memories restored?

Thats not true, Emet has an idea of who we are for pretty much the entire time. He can see individual souls with enough clarity to pluck Yshtola out of the Lifestream directly, and makes several hints that he is aware of our identity with saying shit like "oh you wouldn't remember it" when talking about Amarot. Plus he wouldn't have had tine to prepare the Azem stone and make sure it and the other goodies found their way into our hands if he had only become aware of our identity as Azem in the moment leading up to the fight.
