No, I'm not going to learn Japanese.

No, I'm not going to learn Japanese. No, I'm not going to spend that much time, money and effort to learn a different language just for the sole purpose consuming Japanese comics, anime and videogames without English Dubs or English Subtitles. Yes, I do watch English Dubs simply if I feel like to especially if it features English VAs I recognize. Yes, I do often play JRPGs in English because I like to and often features English VAs I do recognize. And if I do find and agree when an English Dub is bad or mediocre sounding compared to Jap audio, I will switch Jap voices and English Subs.

Is it really so morally wrong to consume alone enjoy English Dubs and or Subs without being immediately lumped in with Left Wing SJW Californian consumers and all the political culture war baggage that is now latched onto Sub-versus-Dubs? Again, I consume and do English Dubs because I simply choose to because of the voices I recognize and like WITHOUT any of that left vs. right vs. centrist culture war brain rot. Maybe you Americans should have not constantly politicized everything with your uniquely Californian ideas within a 1 mile radius. What a timeline to live in where Subs-versus-Dubs is no longer an weaboo/otaku anime nerd culture thing, but is now a politically charged culture war and Partisan talking point.

Oh, and most of you have bothered spending that much time, money and effort to learn Japanese just to consume Japanese media without English Translations are NEVER going to travel to Japan. You're not going to travel to Japan even for touring, you're not going to hold conversations with Japanese people, you're never going to put your newfound Japanese language skills into any practical use outside of flexing to your anime weeb friends and communities online. You're probably not going to watch or read any other Japanese media or literature that isn't videogames, anime or manga.

I dunno anon. That seems to be the norm these days. Everything is political, the art of a cute anime girl eating a hamburger you gaze upon is political. Football, baseball and basket ball is political. Holding hands with your crush is political. There has to be some hidden message about Late Stage Capitalism and Workers Revolts in a children's cartoon, according the popular streamer no.83283.

Heh, whether you like it or not, oh Westerner. That is sadly that unfortunate and tragic state of the society right now. Being straight as an arrow and having a light skin pigmentation is lifetime heresy, your kids can't just be a boy or a girl alone. Certain women should have all the privilege of sleeping around as much as they want to. Having standards is wrong because "patriarchy."

And the case of this thread's topic. Eastern cartoons, games and comics must now have "global" standards to fit the diversity quota or you're not getting investor money. And choosing English Dubs because you simply like to and because of favorite English VA you recognize means you must be a leftist communist sympathizer! All because Sub versus Dubs is now political and part of Le Culture War.

Dubs are better. The weird, stilted way voice actors have to speak with the japanese pacing is pretty unique. Lends to some really memorable lines and run on sentences. I don’t watch anime these days (I saw berserk 20 years and decided I was never going to see another anime as powerful so why bother to keep watching) but when I did, I never cared if it was sub or dub. Who does care? No one I’d be caught dead with in public.

Okay /gamers/. What solution can you propose to fix this type of issue then? I am going to play devil's advocate in OP's defense for a bit, because people seem to not realize the bigger picture. For its not just localized dialogue alone but literally cultural and internal. Yes, leaning Japanese can spare you the sjw lefty localization and thus you can enjoy the intended content and message the Jap devs intended... But that can only work for so long until the Japs themselves will now have to start censoring caving into commiefornia standards since there're rumors ESG is starting creep into Japanese corpos. So much so that eventually even the original and actual Japanese dialogue will no longer be any more different than the localized/dubbed dialogue and wording, thus all those Japanese lessons for the sole purpose enjoying Japanese media is for vain.

But maybe that's just rumors, but who's to say that ain't a worse case scenario that would play out. So I'm willing to give that OP vaguely understands or might have a bit of awareness that learning Japanese just to not use English translations is not going to solve what is otherwise deep seated cultural and internal issue. Along with the fact that the Japanese corpos and devs themselves are the ones hiring the ESG commiefornia folk to translate and localize their shit to begin with. Ultimately learning the Japanese language to consume without the localizer baggage is just a short term quick fix solution. And no amount of learning Kanji or writing calligraphy is gonna save you from the worst case scenario that is the Jap devs themselves fully bending the knee to le Global ESG standards and fully go with the politically correct" dialogue but now in authentic Japanese.

But maybe Jap devs one day will instead use AI to translate and localize rather than hire the commiefornia localizers. This might kill the English Translators and EN dubbing industry, but hey. Maybe that is one of the better options?

In my experience it's the complete opposite, it's like living your whole life tied up watching shadows on the wall of a cave, and then breaking free and going outside for the first time.

It's terrible learning Japanese, because you suddenly come to the realisation that you haven't actually consumed any Japanese media before, just shadow puppets with a vague resemblance.

There's so much media in so many different languages that it's dumb to argue that you should just learn them all. It's a waste of time.
If literally all you do is play video games then you could make the argument for Japanese, but I'm not a pleb, I watch movies/shows in all sorts of languages and read translated books.
We should demand better from translations, simply saying "just learn the language" is a non-starter. It ain't gonna happen.
But I watch foreign media with subs and play a lot of games with Japanese voices (depends on the game).
