Is it just that those games were bad or is the whole genre busted and it can't be made good?

none of those games have anything in common outside of space travel
anyone telling you otherwise is a disingenuous Black person who has never played any of them
All of them are "space" games. I just want pic related but less excel spreadsheet game and more action story.
we are 5-ish years away from simply speaking into your mic and telling games of this type what sort of building/factory/whatever you want contstructed, and it will set all of it for you then you can tweak it to your specifications
>I want a factory that produces HE missiles and ships them to this container for me to pick up and use
>I want a fully automated cheesesteak kahuna factory that also sells automatically
etc.
No it's not. I've played it on and off for years (founded it day 1 kickstarter). It's a buggy nightmare and has way too high system requirements for what it is. It also ruthlessly wastes your time with trivial moving around and interacting in the world tasks.

I spent most of that time in excel mode so I don't want it to be replaced by AI. What I want is excel mode building + long story + space shooting. Everspace 2 + X4 where you do the everspace 2 part of the game to get money so you can switch into excel x4. And then as you build more stuff you periodically go back to shooting things up.
Games are bad.
Double X series. They huge sandbox similar type games, and they gave their own charm and comfiness, though they are not for everyone.
>whole genre
What genre, moron? "Space" is not a genre
There are plenty of good games set in space
Give examples.
ksp
FTL, Starsector, Stellaris are all games I still play regularly.
No mans sky isnt that bad now, SPaZ was pretty fun, endless space 2 and dyson sphere program are pretty good too. There are tons of space based games if you look back further than the last year
>all strategy games or 2d games where space is essentially a skin
No.
it kinda is space rpgs/sims have been a sub genre since way back...kiddo
it's just setting. might as well call starcraft space game genre
If you look closely at these games they have a similar theme in the gameplay, Basically a space trading sim.
yea and you can look closely that not space games have trading as well, you just don't use spaceships. instead it can be water ships for example
ok but the point is its SPACE trading
so aion and dark souls are basically the same thing because you can sell/buy items, I call it fantasy trade games
Star Citizen is actually really good though
And only $49.5 USD to get into.
I spent a lot of time making space combat games and came to the conclusion that it's either very difficult or beyond me
there are a lot of difficulties to overcome with making the genre fun. of course, my inability proves nothing. But many people have failed
I mean, there's a few exceptions and decent ones. But nothing that properly hits the mark imo, especially recently.
best space game is Diaspora: Shattered Armistice btw. free right now
Turns out "space" is actually really big, boring and empty, and you need more to a setting to make it interesting than just "it takes place in space".
no such thing as a good space game
>lists 3 games people rightfully called scams from the get go
>Is it just that these games are bad
you've got some massive blinders on.
How is starfield a scam? It is just a horrible game.
blatantly lying about the game before release doesn't count?
You can make them good if you limit the scale to just one star system instead of relying on procedurally generated crap.
procgen+AI combo might be good in the feature though
>It's been 23 years and there is still no decent spiritual successor to Freelancer
How do you frick up a space game, but even more - keep fricking it up for the next 2 decades? I thought Chris Roberts was going to do something when Vapor Citizen was kickstarted, but instead that megalomaniac homosexual deserved the rope.
Everspace 2 is the closest thing.
Starfield was good and playable, more than can be said for the other two.
