I think it's a combination of both. Parts of him definitely feel fitting for From's style of villain, too. It feels like a good fusion of the two. I like Dung Eater a lot because he's by far the most horrifically, unabashedly monstrous and malevolent character in any of the Souls games, while his villainy still really fits a lot of the themes of From's games. He's SUCH a wretched creature that it loops around to being amazing.

It's genuinely good. The sex is aren't particularly gratuitous and serves to establish the characters. Ff your eyes can stand to look at Berserk's multi-page rape drawings, you can easily skim through the occasional sex in these books.
There's barely any sex and there's one scene with Daenerys shitting her brains out because she got extremely sick. It's mostly just implications of sex/rape and a lot of violence. Books are very good.
