Who the frick was calling it shit exactly?
It's a great game, it's worse aspect is needing to beat every level with every character. That's it.
Can you gays go ONE fricking day without seething at Nintendo? Seriously.
I'm not going around making a hundred seethe threads about sony or microsoft games. Develop yourselves. Make threads for shit you enjoy God damn.
i like nintendo but i'm not going to turn a blind eye to them making a game as uninspired as mario 3d world just because i like the games they've made in the past. rise beyond your cultism you dog.
>blind eye to them making a game as uninspired as mario 3d world
How exactly is 3d world uninspired? The game's rather creative in its gameplay mechanics, boss design and even plays around with some Mario tropes.
Loads of people. Everyone justified not getting the "Pii Poo" by saying all the games were shit, despite obviously never having played them and no matter what they were. I know because I had a Wii U and was actually on Ganker back then, which apparently you were not. Don't get assblasted over someone who simply remembers it.

Hardly a WiiU game, only due to being the original platform, but nothing about it utilizes the WiiU, it seemed more like they released it just because they had it ready, like BotW.

Well, no, it was one of the first games to jump ship, real WiiU games like ZombiU, NintendoLand and Game & Wario.
Yes, that's par of the course. The narrative at the time was that the Wii U was a shit console, so all the games on it HAD to be shit as well. That's how you got gems like this review.
This is why you don't listen to journalists, and you don't listen to "gamer consensus". People just go along with what they think they're supposed to say. Half of them probably didn't play the game (especially the journalists).
That's why Ganker is the best, You'll only hear the negatives about a game, then you can decide if it's a deal breaker for you or not. Everywhere else is just people sucking the dick of something they already decided they like while being blind to the flaws.
This is why you don't listen to journalists, and you don't listen to "gamer consensus". People just go along with what they think they're supposed to say. Half of them probably didn't play the game (especially the journalists).
Metacritic has been a massive net negative for game discussion (User reviews included). Finding 2-3 reviewers that you specifically align with and seeing what their impressions are while looking at pre-release material/gameplay is massively more efficient. Steam reviews can be more helpful if you want an aggregate opinion but you need to read some of the negative comments to see if it's just a bad game or if the developer made bad decision 3 years after the game came out.
Hard to recommend when everybody's got different tastes and preferences for review format, plus honestly I spend more time doing self-research on new games while old game recommendations are what I usually get from individual reviewers.
Journos only ever say what they think their audience wants to hear. If nobody wants the console, the games are shit so no need to worry about getting it. If the console is super popular and has a rabid fanbase, the games are all masterpieces or at the very least get a hefty bonus no matter how garbage they are. They've zero integrity.
Moving faster (as well as the moves imported from Odyssey) gave this game some desperately needed higher skill ceiling. Movement was way too neutered compared to others 3D Mario.
Easy answer
Nobody bought a Wii U.
It's why everything worth playing on the switch is Wii U ports. It also sucks because the Wii U is more or less the ultimate system for weird nonstandard shit that isn't automatically done better on PC
I disliked it out of the fear that it would set a precedent of permanently NSMB'ifiing the 3D Mario games in an era where every Mario Series was slowly being sterilized and unified, chipping away the identity of spinoff series.
Now that we had Odyssey, i can appreciate the game for what it is and enjoy it
This. Kind of why I hate Wonder. It’s the best 2D Mario by far and a ton of fun but the 3d Mario’s are always better and I’m concerned Wonders success could hamper future production.
I thought it was OK but I played it through the Switch rerelease that speeds up your character a LOT in normal levels. I'd have probably wanted to fricking kill myself playing the Wii U version.
World Bowser's music was a lovely surprise, best bop in the game
You move a lot faster in a sprint in 3D World + Bowser's Fury than you do in the Wii U version of the game. You're slow as frick in the Wii U version since they're expecting you to be bumbling around with two or three other morons as a form of level filler but the Switch port makes things go a lot closer to how 3D Land goes.
its where i created the "What could go wrong?" meme with the stamps you collect in the game and then post afterlevel completion that reddit hijacked reddit ruins fricking everything tho
The game was fun tho
It's just so low budget compared to all the other 3D Mario games. Shitloads of reused assets, extremely unambitious. My only assumption about how we went from Galaxy to 3D World is that Nintendo thought 3D Mario was less important with NSMB blowing up like it did.
It was the world format of classic Mario with the stage format of 64. With simultaneous 4 player. It was genius, and I'm not sure why they haven't just done it again.
>Multiplayer with 5 unique characters >8 worlds with 3.5 bonus worlds and tons of levels in each one >2 new powerups as well as bringing back the boomerang and tanooki >Tons of new enemies and bosses along with a new train type boss level, replacing airships >Incredibly charming, gives the characters personality, actually has Bowser use powerups again in the final fight like he did in 3D Land >Music is amazing, sound design is good too >Switch version add a whole new game, which was awesome
Why do people hate this game???
I think it's fun to just blitz through levels, while still going after collectibles. Galaxy may have more variety and spectacle but the platfforming in it is kinda plodding and generally not as engaging mechanically without any gimmicks.
My favorite 3D Mario, I really appreciate the 3D Mario movement with more straight-forward level design of the 2D games and different characters with gameplay differences. Getting Rosalina was a great bonus.
I was pretty disappointed by this when it released on Wii I but replaying it on Switch I had a blast. Part of it is because of the increased speed and expanded moveset that allows you more flexibility when exploring the levels (a shitload of collectables that used to require the cat power up can be reached with ground pound jump + wall jump + aerial roll), but even without that I had to admit that the level design is excellent, there are so many great levels and a shitload of ideas. The main flaw is still the presentation, compared to Galaxy and all others 3D games this is really bland looking and unassuming, and that coupled with the general trend at the time of every Mario game seeming to get the NSMB treatment is a believe what led to the lukewarm reception, but now that we're past that era it's easier to appreciate 3D World for its actual qualities.
The thing about this game that annoys me the most is how levels don't fit with the theme of the world a lot of the time. A desert level in the ice world? Yeah sure, why not. It seems like a trivial thing but this lack of concern about immersion can ruin the experience.
They're both good, but it is just nice to have everything you want with no compromises. I pretty much waited twenty years to get a fully functioning fire flower in a 3D Mario, with no timers.
3D world is what I imagined when Mario would do when he transitioned to 3D. Just taking 2D Mario levels and turning them 3D. I think that's why I enjoy it more than the standard 3D Mario games
I played the switch version, liked it a lot as I was going through it, but looking back I can’t remember a single level besides the last one. Probably will never play it again.
It was decent, the idea of playing a traditional Mario game in 3D was something everyone desired. My only complaint is that it was too much of a cakewalk and the boss fights sucked. Especially when you’re fighting Boom Boom and Pom Pom, the three stomp shit gets repetitive quickly.
>3D Land and 3D World coming after Galaxy 1 and 2 made people b***h about linearity >Mario Odyssey happens and gives us the design we've been wanting >Now people are b***hing against open design and Odyssey and want to go back to Galaxy/3D World linearity
I fricking hate Mario fans, this is worse than pretending NSMB was good because Wonder got praised when everybody and their mom got fricking dead tired of NSMB.
I did. Looking for the green stars in each level is great because it really makes you explore the level, searching high and low for hidden alcoves and areas that lead you off the beaten path. And not just that, but it has fakeoutd where you THINK the stamp or star will be but it’s just a scenic spot to look down on the level or uncover coins. There’s tons of variety in the levels, and the cat suit adds a perfect mobility option akin to the tanooki/raccoon suit from 3 that lets you climb walls.
Not only that, but each character had unique abilities akin to mario 2(thanks for nothing, wonder) so you can really experiment with your options through a level
>Looking for the green stars in each level is great because it really makes you explore the level
Then why did you complain about the blue coins in Mario Sunshine?
I find it odd that Dunkey decided to mention that 3D World was the best game in 2013 when talking about Bowser's Fury when he never bothered to say anything about that game, which I'm pretty sure was only joke stuff back then.
I know, that's why I find it odd
Not to say that a person's opinion can't change on a revisit, that's basically what happened. I guess it's better for him to just redo the review entirely than to mention the bias of back then
I think my main issue besides the blandness of the aesthetic is that I just don't like the catsuit. I don't find the idea of climbing walls in a platformer interesting and I find it more ugly than silly or fun.
I would argue 3D Land did it better because the 3D Effect made the jumps a lot more better.
You eventually get used to 3D World but when you jump into that game as a sequel to 3D Land, it becomes distracting because that game was designed for distance vision
This game is stress inducing trying to get every green star and the flag pole tip by the mid and late game stages. I am afraid of what it will take to unlock Rosalina without losing my mind.
I did.
No you didn’t
You're right, I didn't. I was just messing with you.
I did. It's fun
>releases on wii u
>everyone calls it shit(it is)
>releases on switch
>everyone says its one of the best in the series
?????
You can run faster in the switch version so it feels better to play
It was the best, the only reason anyone shit on it was because being on the WiiU meant it HAD to be a bad game to redditors like yourself.
"the wii u had only bad games" is not a position that anybody takes you fricking spastic. mario 3d world was just uniquely shit.
People just didn't play Wii U games, and then coped by saying they probably sucked anyway.
Who the frick was calling it shit exactly?
It's a great game, it's worse aspect is needing to beat every level with every character. That's it.

if you were talking about the NSMB series then maybe I'd agree with you but 3D World was pure ludo
3d world was essentially a 3d nsmb game
>blind eye to them making a game as uninspired as mario 3d world
How exactly is 3d world uninspired? The game's rather creative in its gameplay mechanics, boss design and even plays around with some Mario tropes.
Loads of people. Everyone justified not getting the "Pii Poo" by saying all the games were shit, despite obviously never having played them and no matter what they were. WiiU games aren't that good
Are you sure about that? Name one game that isn't that good
All of them are mediocre.
Donkey kong tropical freeze is one of the best platformers ever
Hardly a WiiU game, only due to being the original platform, but nothing about it utilizes the WiiU, it seemed more like they released it just because they had it ready, like BotW.

2 different guys reviewed it
It's still indicative of a general editorial direction and zeitgeist.
This is why you don't listen to journalists, and you don't listen to "gamer consensus". People just go along with what they think they're supposed to say. Half of them probably didn't play the game (especially the journalists).

You are a big brain Anon. The score inflation is insane. Anyone you recommend?
Hard to recommend when everybody's got different tastes and preferences for review format, plus honestly I spend more time doing self-research on new games while old game recommendations are what I usually get from individual reviewers.

Nintendo journos should be fired forever
I liked it more than Odyssey.
I played it on Wii U.
I always thought it was good.
I bought it on Wii U, and absolutely loved it. People shat on it because it was on the Wii U, no other reason.
Ganker only likes this game to pretend all of good switch games launched on wii u first
Switch version is easy mode and breaks the game by having you move faster for no reason. Anyone playing this shit on Switch is a dirt casual.
Moving faster (as well as the moves imported from Odyssey) gave this game some desperately needed higher skill ceiling. Movement was way too neutered compared to others 3D Mario.
I hated the sluggish movement in the Wii U version.
Easy answer

That makes sense
This. Kind of why I hate Wonder. It’s the best 2D Mario by far and a ton of fun but the 3d Mario’s are always better and I’m concerned Wonders success could hamper future production.
There are literally zero chances that Wonder will sell more than Odyssey (close to 30 millions).
Awesome, thanks Anon.
Switch version is better but it is one of the best. It's up there with World and Wonder.
The fate of every Wii U port
Except Tokyo Mirage Session
switch games are all masterpieces just by default of being on the switch, don'tchya know?
I remember saying these game were good but getting dumped on because le console wars and 'le Pii U' (I'm an idort).
>everyone
Nope, it's still the 3D Mario equivalent of NSMBslop.
Bowser's Fury is the only good part of it.
>People call games they haven't played shit
>People call games that they play amazing
I hate people.
as far as linear marios go, it's the best. I'd even rank it above the galaxy games

The Wii U finally had a game, that was all that I cared about
Bait used to be believable
It was the world format of classic Mario with the stage format of 64. With simultaneous 4 player. It was genius, and I'm not sure why they haven't just done it again.

Why do people hate this game???
The reason it has so many levels is because they're very low quality, constantly reusing assets and design concepts.
Pretty much every level had a different concept, you're drunk dude.
Because it's a shitty Mario Party
I think it's fun to just blitz through levels, while still going after collectibles. Galaxy may have more variety and spectacle but the platfforming in it is kinda plodding and generally not as engaging mechanically without any gimmicks.
It's cool to play with friends, but you're basically right. It's more of a Rabids game than a Mario game tbh.
My favorite 3D Mario, I really appreciate the 3D Mario movement with more straight-forward level design of the 2D games and different characters with gameplay differences. Getting Rosalina was a great bonus.

It's like a snappier, more focused Galaxy game
easily better than Sunshine
3D World > Odyssey
its the only actual 3D mario.
It's 2.5D.
no. nsmb and wonder are what people call 2.5D
what do you think "2.5D" means
>save all the good levels for the last world which requires 100% completion
why are they like this
Beat it on the wiiu, switch emulator and later on the switch.
Had way more fun with it then Wonder
The thing about this game that annoys me the most is how levels don't fit with the theme of the world a lot of the time. A desert level in the ice world? Yeah sure, why not. It seems like a trivial thing but this lack of concern about immersion can ruin the experience.
It's better with multiplayer
At least it was still better than 3D Land. God what a turd that was.
3D Land was solid. Had tighter level design than World, which had to make concessions for the dumb multiplayer.
Nah, 3D World had better levels, the ones in 3D Land were very short and plagued by outdated "3D" setpieces.
Toad Chad main reporting in
This and 3D land were better than the "proper" 3D Marios.
Skill issue
Nope.
>very first walljump not even touching the wall
tf is this shit
It's from the side of the platform.
They're both good, but it is just nice to have everything you want with no compromises. I pretty much waited twenty years to get a fully functioning fire flower in a 3D Mario, with no timers.
Fixed camera angles showed their supremacy yet again in 3D World
It was fine. It kept me amused longer than Wonder did, which got old quick.
It’s a fun video game
>3D World
>Tropical Freeze
>Rayman Legends
>NSMBU+LU
>Mario Maker
Wii U was the GOAT platfomer console.
I forgot Wooly World frick
Bowser's fury was pretty dope though
I liked it
its the best mario game in my opinion
god i love fat princess knockers
Why not?
have a nice day, I liked it and no longer buy Nintendo products because they punished us Wii U buyers.
3D world is what I imagined when Mario would do when he transitioned to 3D. Just taking 2D Mario levels and turning them 3D. I think that's why I enjoy it more than the standard 3D Mario games
3DL sucks too.
Better than Sunshine.
It's very okay. Just okay.
Wrong. Sunshine is peak sovl.
i did, when i had friends back in the wii u days. 4 player on champion's road was amazing.
It's "fine" like 90% of all Mario games, but overrated these days. Tendies calling this a genuine 3D Mario are being disingenuous.
Feel free to explain how Galaxy is a genuine 3D Mario game but this isn't.
I played the switch version, liked it a lot as I was going through it, but looking back I can’t remember a single level besides the last one. Probably will never play it again.
I liked playing it drunk with my friend on the weekends years ago
no nude not real game
It was decent, the idea of playing a traditional Mario game in 3D was something everyone desired. My only complaint is that it was too much of a cakewalk and the boss fights sucked. Especially when you’re fighting Boom Boom and Pom Pom, the three stomp shit gets repetitive quickly.
Mario never had good bosses, these ones were passable enough.
I 100% it.
Shit's fun.
>3D Land and 3D World coming after Galaxy 1 and 2 made people b***h about linearity
>Mario Odyssey happens and gives us the design we've been wanting
>Now people are b***hing against open design and Odyssey and want to go back to Galaxy/3D World linearity
I fricking hate Mario fans, this is worse than pretending NSMB was good because Wonder got praised when everybody and their mom got fricking dead tired of NSMB.
I would like to like it if it didn't give me motion sickness
And dat soundtrack
>Looking for the green stars in each level is great because it really makes you explore the level
Then why did you complain about the blue coins in Mario Sunshine?
there's dozens of them and many are tedious.
I don’t hate sunshine for the blue coins
I find it odd that Dunkey decided to mention that 3D World was the best game in 2013 when talking about Bowser's Fury when he never bothered to say anything about that game, which I'm pretty sure was only joke stuff back then.
He actually shat on the game back in the day.
I know, that's why I find it odd
Not to say that a person's opinion can't change on a revisit, that's basically what happened. I guess it's better for him to just redo the review entirely than to mention the bias of back then
I checked it out for Bowser's Fury only and I liked it a lot
3D World proper it's okay I guess
Same. It was good while Bowsers fury was not.
Bait
It's unironically one of the best 3D Mario games and it's even plays extremely well multiplayer or single player.
Said no one ever
Terrible bait
I think my main issue besides the blandness of the aesthetic is that I just don't like the catsuit. I don't find the idea of climbing walls in a platformer interesting and I find it more ugly than silly or fun.
It's too overpowered.
Why did they up the movement speed without changing the level design? The game feels really weird and chaotic on Switch but not in a good way.
You can always not hold the run button if it's too fast for you.
It's a generic meh Mario, but it's still way better than Odyssey.
3DW is notable for being the only (mostly) isometric platfomer that actually plays well.
I would argue 3D Land did it better because the 3D Effect made the jumps a lot more better.
You eventually get used to 3D World but when you jump into that game as a sequel to 3D Land, it becomes distracting because that game was designed for distance vision
3DL had a more dynamic camera, while because of the multiplayer in 3DW it was mostly fixed and isometric.
wrong
If you fricking homosexuals unironically start this shit up again where you pretend Mario invented 3D isometric platformers
Like most things Nintendo wasn't the first but it was the first to do it right.
I love galaxy as much as the next guy but 3D World being less floaty, and didn't feel stuck in level themes made it enjoyable for variety.
This game is stress inducing trying to get every green star and the flag pole tip by the mid and late game stages. I am afraid of what it will take to unlock Rosalina without losing my mind.
The timer is surprisingly tight, if you waste just a little time playing around you won't make it.
