Kinda cringe dialogues and notes, but overall it was better than expected, makes me miss PT and Silent Hills even more.
Nothing special really but it's free to play so that was nice from an AAA company.

Too much unnecessary swearing and COVID-19 mentions were stupid.
There was only one puzzle in the 2 hour long gameplay(if you read everything you could) so that was bad as well.
But the sounds and the atmosphere were good imo.
Shame that shitty writings will always ruin what could have been neat gameplay for a free game

I'm just getting tired of that type of voice acting. I don't know how to describe it. It sounds like when someone is faking crying and can't produce tears. Seems like most game VAs are doing this now and it's terrible.

Final fantasy could be whatever the devs want and has been since they made a shitty american spin off or a Game that was barely an RPG(FF4).

        >The story does not even happen in Silent Hill
Because Motoi Okamoto is working to distance the franchise from the town. One of the mandates he has given the teams working on Silent Hill games is that they're not allowed to take place in the US town of Silent Hill.

And his own game (The Short Message, and Silent Hill 5 which I believe he's directing, not to be confused with Silent Hill: f) will not take place in the town. Silent Hill is a global phenomena. It goes without saying that Silent Hill 2 remake will make certain adjustments to reinforce this new canon.

Because one of the problems with SH2, 3, 4, SM, Downpour, etc. is them taking place in the town of Silent Hill. It's forced. They're trying to find a more organic basis for sequels.

You're right. I should have said they were explicitly tied to events in Silent Hill. The characters either come from Silent Hill or are somehow attached to it. What Konami want to do, or their head of Silent Hill wants to do is basically make Silent Hill(s).

considering that silent hill has a way of leading its victims into the town itself, like james getting a letter from his dead wife and going to silent hill to find her etc, this is pretty meh. i assume they hope they can get more people interested in the franchise if they give the game new looks every once in a while, like a japanese silent hill or whatever, but that focuses too much on superficial looks when it's the gameplay and writing they should be worried about instead.

      >uhmmm, supernatural fog and evil god aren't real guys, trust the science, the real silent hill was the friends we made along

Isn't it super common knowledge that the team behind SH Ascension were ordered to include references to The Short Message, and to set the game in Norway and parts of the US outside of Silent Hill? The director came out and said that Konami told them that they were not allowed to feature the town. None of the new SH games feature the town, only SH2R. Even Townfall likely doesn't feature the OG town.

this i can actually believe. Remember the talk with the downpour devs that stated how they made close to hundreds of different creature concepts all for it to be micromanaged by some Konami managers who never even played the originals. Whos line of reasoning came down to "we need the ceiling crawler since that was in the movies and market research shows it is a larger target audience"

and for all its failures and faults downpour was one of the closest western SHs that came close to a new fresh take on the town

The Resident Evil TV show failed because they didn't have the guy who turned the movies into such a big success. They knew how to superficially copy his style, but not the soul. For example, the New Racoon City town is clearly a homage to Sundown Meadows from RE Retribution. But here's the thing. Sundown Meadows was directly inspired by The Truman Show. It was a really, really effective riff on that concept, mixing it with Dawn of the Dead. New Raccoon City was kinda neat aesthetically, but it didn't resonate the way Sundown Meadows did. And the whole show is like that.

All these years later, and these films are unmatched.

There is no reason to care about any game bearing the name Silent Hill. Silent Hill died a long time ago, may it rest in peace.
I used to hate Konami for that but when I look at the current state of almost every franchise I'm glad they fricked it up so badly and so early; the end was swift and merciful.

All they had to do was not title it under "Silent Hill".
Get rid of the rubbish references to Silent Hill, just call it "The Short Message", and they could have even charged people a couple of dollars for it, and the reception would have been better.

It's a Silent Hill game directed by the HEAD OF THE FRANCHISE, who is currently directing Silent Hill 5. Ignoring The Short Message isn't going to make it go away. It's literally the blueprint for the franchises' future. They definitely showed Christophe Gans the game, too, because his vision for Return to Silent Hill is in alignment with Konami's new vision for SH.

And that was the reason why she was there because she was blaming herself for her death.

How do you even make a successful SH game nowadays? It feels like everyone would take the chance to dogpile whatever is made regardless of creatives behind it. Silent Hills p.t. demo was the only time I saw genuine intrigue, and it was more because "le kojima will save the series" like people only care about big names.

Be earnest. That's it. No trigger warnings at the beginning of the game, no half-assed midwit puzzles, no desperation to recreate SH2's twist, just a neat story with good puzzles and amazing sound design.

        Anonymous

This anon does get it. SH2 was a masterpiece. You don't need to chase that purple dragon, though. The worst thing this entry seems to be doing is it is trying to overexplain. People stay for the metaphor and analysis. They show up for the freakish monstrosities trying to murder you in a deeply mysterious nightmare helltown.

Trying to suck the mystery out of it just kills the whole thing.

        Anonymous

Honestly yeah, but I think another thing is we need different creatives on it. Someone like Kojima and Del Toro feels too movie like, we need more genuine human problems to draw from. It's why I'm interested in ƒ, I just hope it doesn't become too like higurashi or umineko.

What's so bad about the idea of a woman, with her dying breath, uttering some foul words that bring the economy of a small German town down into the dumps, tanking the local industry?

It has no room in a psychological horror setting as an important piece of the plot, it's offputting and frankly out-of-place. It's laughably absurd.

It's like if the Texas Chainsaw Massacre had a scene where during a chase, Leatherface screamed "I'M ONLY DOING THIS 'CAUSE THE LOCAL FOOD INDUSTRY IS IN THE SHITTER, YA'LL!"

          Anonymous

Huh? The curse is put on the town, not the economy itself. The town's economy fails as an effect of the curse because everything's cursed there.
I think every shitty aspect of the town in this game is ultimately caused by this curse. It manifests itself by making the people's lives who stay there miserable in various ways. That's why all three of the main girls have shitty lives, that's why every attempt to reinvigorate the town's economy fails, that's why suicides are so common at this apartment complex, etc. I think it all comes back to the curse.

I'm 100% convinced this game ties into Silent Hill f somehow. My prediction is that f will revolve around the life of this supposed witch character, either as the main character or an important side character.
            You heard it here first.

Oh also, the town is cursed, sure, which is why all this bad shit happens there, but all the surreal shit that the main girl experiences is caused by the Silent Hill Phenomenon. Either SHP is a personal state of delusion and hallucination caused by mental instability, or it's actually a gateway into another realm that mentally unstable people can access.

my thoughts exactly, plus the girl that killed herself was asian and hated like cheryl was, so probably a descendant or some shit

I'm very curious to see how Silent Hill f ties into previous Silent Hill canon. It could be cool if this Japanese witch is connected to The Order.

My bet is its some kind of primordial ancient earth power that can be harnessed by some people and liberated in some way at certain locations or when the subject is scared or angry enough, thus creating the otherworld dimension or "access point" in set places like silent hill itself or the new town in this game, and that power manifestating as a perceived curse like in this games town were all peoples lives suck ass

From a narrative stand it's still effectively the same damn thing.

Also: why do the local scienctist and resarchers immediately jump to the conclusion that it's most likely a witch curse? Where the frick did this group of (allegedly) intelligent scholars get their diplomas if THAT is the first thing their scientific methods lead them to?

              >From a narrative stand it's still effectively the same damn thing
Not really. The witch put a curse on the town, and the economy failing is just one of many negative effects of that curse that's mentioned. It's not a special money curse.
The local scientists and researchers never claim it's a curse btw. It's a town rumor.

There was absolutely no reason to set it in germany, it had absolutely no contribution to the plot, the school might as well could have been an american school, only reason that comes to mind is that it could potentially connect to silent hill f thats supposedly set in japan and there was mention of a witch dying in the town, but it took absolutely no advantage of the different setting
