my favorite substyle of SNES art is when they needed to redraw chibi / SD characters for the Western audience. imagine you're an illustrator in the 80s, sitting at your desk crammed with artwork. some guy in a suit walks in and says, "hey Don (your name is Don), we have this little Japanese game right here. it's called, eh… KeeKee KayKay? so, we need you to redraw these characters, because we don't think they fit our audience over here, y'know. give them more attitude!".
I would have loved a Garbage Pail Kids game by Konami, their Cabbage Patch Kids game for Coleco and MSX was one of the better looking pre-NES games and best sidescrollers.
American Goemon and his meaty, wrinkly little Jim Henson Ninja Turtle sausage hands were a misfire, and that's what a lot of people naturally focus on but the rest of this is actually quite brilliant and I think I (My name's Don, hi) fulfilled what was requested of me to the letter. If I was my boss, Mr. Bill Konami, I'd be quite chuffed. The Tiger is especially a highlight, fricking hell LOOK AT HIM
As I recall Goemon's translation was quite competent at that time while retaining some of its humor. It was just a fun game regardless if you understood it or not.
Can someone explain the thought process behind the localization choice of designing “Pocky” to appear like a middle-school 50-year-old Cher? Rocky looks great for a western Tanuki
it was just a general Western art trend of turning every young girl into a wine aunt. Cher released "Believe" later in '98, so they were onto something.
>Can someone explain the thought process behind using the consistent style of the time that everyone in the target locale has been accustomed to for decades?
No, because you're a dirty little out-of-touch weeb who puts everything japernese on a pedestal.
As an actual japangay, I'm so tired of drooling fawning weeabooism.
White people making art other white people would like in a world without internet. The only info on Japan people could access came from books and most places didn't have libraries. It was all relatively new even to experts.
I can't stay in school, I'm 32 years old, school was over years ago for me. I'm sorry you have a broad misconception of what the past was like because you don't know anything about happened back then.
peak gfcore
reimu if she american
Cher if she miko

oh vr knows about this game? thats athletic land, yes, one of the best (if not the best or hero) platformer you could play at home before 1985.
It's very few of us, but there are still some older guys on this board even after the rule change.
have to settle for Retrotainment
Great game but
Konami had solid gold in their hands with the Goemon franchise.
They never brought very many of the games over though so missed opportunity for the gambling machine company.
>horse racing in the background
Must be a joke.
Mindbreaking stuff right there
Why, you never played the game?
This art is actually pretty sick, even though Goemon himself looks kinda goofy.
This is fantastic artwork. Only 12-year old turboweebs dislike it.
32-year old*

This is has to be the one time this jap to west style actually worked (likely because the person behind it actually knows how to draw)

They were trying to westernise the anime character so it could sell in burgland but artist wasn't very good at it. Many such cases

You will never be Japanese, Hiram.

You're underestimating how well-connected things were then even without the Internet.
>"Nuh uh!"
Stay in school.

2 players would've been better if you couldn't slide into each other. Pretty shit mechanic.
