it's not rpgm it's srpg studio but if you haven't played TS' games you absolutely owe it to yourself. start with shinsetsu mahou shoujo then play erumani>otoz>knights of subaru>yaminabe kikaku.
genuinely one of the best gaming experiences of all time.
the other games are made with the much maligned srpg studio 95 and erumani is honestly not an amazing game but still very much worth playing (use a guide when you do because it's got a conditional true ending) but otoz is absolute kino and subaru is pretty good too. and then yaminabe functions as a crossover and sequel to all of those games at once while also being its own thing.
dev is still making new shit too.
yeah i won't lie erumani looks like ass but i'll still give it a shot
kuon no kanata was the one i was thinking of, i guess i just forgot to check if they'd made previous games
thanks for the tip
erumani isn't a BAD game, just kind of nonsensical and a relic of its time. it has some good points (and the finale is genuinely kino) but otoz onward, despite being srpg95, are genuinely good games. hope you enjoy buddy
website's got a guide so i should be fine. they bought themselves a lifetime supply of good will from me for mahou shoujo after all. i can't believe almost all this stuff is freeware too, blessed jp doujin game makers
cheers m8
>mahou shoujo mentioned
I wish I could show this game to people without them instantly being put off by the main characters being scantily clad 13 year old girls. It's genuinely a miracle-level game that feels like it COULD NOT have been made by largely just one dude. And yet it was.
>pretty much the only one who even brings up the lewd angle is the 10 yr old
i feel like they could've aged up everyone to at least high school level to match the portraits a little better but it's common knowledge that middle schools make for prime mahou shoujo material
retsu being like 14 and built like a brick shithouse is kind of hilarious though
I mean, they do bring up "wow this really shows way too much skin" pretty much every time a new character becomes a magical girl. 90% of them you probably couldn't even post on a blue board kek
Don't feel bad about that - it's a natural filter. Gatekeeps like a charm so you don't have to.
It's sad, but you're right. While I'd like it if more people could enjoy TS' work, letting western players get their hands on it would just lead to him getting harassed off of the internet completely.
Yeah, it's never too late to learn moon. Take the time to do it now and enjoy decades of untranslated stuff without the cold, uncaring hand of the loooooocalizers modifying each word.
learn your hiragana and katakana
get some basic grammar under your belt. i like physical books and you can't really go wrong with genki
learn some common kanji but don't do this in a vacuum, getting fixated on all the different readings is a great way to get swamped in useless shit
immerse
practice every day, every fricking day without fail
it is not difficult itself but it requires tenacity. which is difficult.
also the tip for me that helped was to give up entirely looking for patterns or reasons why or shortcuts
just accept it, remember it, and move on.
and don't get too hung up on the most optimal way to do anything if it means you're not actively doing the thing
you're not saving time if you're not learning at all

I don't think I have what it takes. Maybe someone else can make use of this info, though!
I guess I'll toss in Random Dungeon and Zakuzaku Actors.
They're both long-form games (80+ hours) by the same other. RD's mostly about grinding through the same dungeon maps and collecting stuff and taken on the bosses (there's not really much story until near the end of the first half). The battles are standard RPG fare, but at least it has item-based limit breaks of a fashion.
Zakuzaku is much more story-focused and is built on the question: what if a fantasy world realized that isekai-ing people into slaves was profitable?
It has a pretty fun party system where you can have up to eight party members, four active ones, and swap them out whenever you want to in battle. The author, hamusuta, also started doing their own art in Random Dungeon (picrel) which slowly improves as the game progresses.
The thing is, though, the TL group doing these seemed to frick up the files for Random Dungeon. I don't know if it's still broken, but it was at some point. Zakuzaku isn't fully translated, but there is a rough 2/3 release somewhere.
Oh, the creator did a re-release of Rose Knight! The same group who TL'd RD and ZZA did the translation for the original version of that, so I wonder if they'll do the remake too.
shit, meant to say after Random Dungeon, starting in Zakuzaku Actors, and improving throughout the latter game.
Have another pic I got from the original author's blog.

is there any relation between the two games besides creator in-jokes or the like? zakuzaku seems interesting but RD not quite so much
From what I know, they're set in the same multi-verse, and there are characters who can traverse worlds and there are some from Random's world in Zakuzaku, but ZZA isn't a direct sequel to RD. The characters from RD that appear in ZZA only do so in the very last part of the game.
So, no, RD is not necessary for ZZA, but it is a very relaxing game to play (when it works).
(picrel is fanart of the second half of ZZA's protag)
some years back there used to be an anon on here that would actively advocate for this game
https://freegame-mugen.jp/roleplaying/game_72.html
but from what i remember, he said the language in it was even difficult for native speakers so good luck
it drives me nuts how fricking LONG and MASSIVE these freegames can end up being. i already have enough "officially published" games that i want to play yet these frickers keep calling to me.
>The thing is, though, the TL group doing these seemed to frick up the files for Random Dungeon. I don't know if it's still broken, but it was at some point. Zakuzaku isn't fully translated, but there is a rough 2/3 release somewhere.
There is still the odd crash but I am like 10 hours into the post game of random dungeon in english.
what kind of thing are you looking for? standard jrpg? something a little different? something wildly different?
if you're not really picky, the ones i've played from here
i am monitoring this thread
were all great so i have no reason to suspect the whole list isn't good

but from what i remember, he said the language in it was even difficult for native speakers so good luck
i played it fairly recently, i don't know if it'd say it's particularly advanced moonrunes but it does have some fancier fantasy-ish language in places
it's staggeringly fricking long however, like 150-200 hours
Good, gameplay-focused, non-H, JP RPG Maker games, available to EOPs:
Hat World - An RPG combining SaGa-like combat and character building with sidescrolling platformer exploration. Has a solid battle system and plenty of challenging boss fights. There are six different campaigns to play through, each full of likable characters and interesting stories.
Ruina: Fairy Tale of the Forgotten Ruins - Dungeon crawling RPG inspired by tabletop RPGs. Great exploration, thick atmosphere, lots of choices in how to handle events, and outstanding lore writing.
Helen's Mysterious Castle - Great and unique duel-based combat system. Lots of charm. Its character building system is based entirely around equipment and gives the game plenty of replay value.
Standstill Girl - Similar combat to Helen's. I don't think it's quite as good as Helen, but it's worth playing.
Liar Jeannie in Crucifix Kingdom - By the author of Standstill Girl. Party-based dungeon crawler where you control two human characters and can summon up to two defeated enemies as undead. Good combat and interesting equipment strategy. Has the best status ailment system I've ever seen in an RPG.
Demon King Chronicle - Exploration-focused RPG. Doesn't have a lot of dialogue, but what's there is good. Has solid, attrition-based gameplay, and a unique equipment system that adds a lot of strategy. The English version is no longer officially available, but unofficially you can get it here: https://files.catbox.moe/l02ghi.zip
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The 7th Stand User - A retelling of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders where you play as an OC who joins Jotaro et al. on their quest to defeat Dio. There are a ton of different ways events can play out depending on your character's personality, abilities, and choices. This has a ridiculous amount of postgame and NG+ content. Some of its weaker points include a shallow combat system and grindy design.
Would much appreciate any other EOP-friendly recommendations.
well that was fun, felt like a shitposty game of D&D with friends where no one takes it seriously until the 20th or so session when you suddenly realize the plot kicked into high gear and you care about these chucklefricks you've been picking fights with the whole time
it's cool how you can see the prototypes for a lot of stuff that showed up in mahou shoujo, vaguely similar characters and plot beats and powerups. neat how the writer had the framework down even if a lot of the details in this one were pure goofiness. i also really enjoy how he writes big casts of characters, it's not like anyone is particularly deep, but they bounce off each other really well. i find the constant antagonizing and bullying and picking sides makes them feel more like comrades than your usual everyone-happy-loves-each-other stuff. and the final goodbye had me in stitches
last map kicked my ass around the block though, christ that went down to the wire
motherfricker spawned on the other side of the map and got like 5 free turns of sniping me down as i ran out of pots and ethers and anyone who could heal
The fricking finale of the villain's time-stopping affecting Rutee in an unexpected way was so actually fricking kino dude. That final map really truly is a complete b***h though.
i will never stop loving event battles where you can't lose, have massively buffed stats, and just oneshot a boss that has been giving you hell plus all the effort into new sprites/attack animations and everything
I recall there was another indie rpg game that was translated by anons here but it was NOT Hat World, anyone know what I'm talking about?
They had threads here but I dont frequent this board regularly so I don't remember
Hmm, not ringing any bells. Might not be RPGM I guess, I even asked in one of its threads if it was related to Hat World since it had tons of personalized cute sprites and I vaguely remember the answer being a no.
Thanks for the recs anyways
uhh no sadly, I didnt even play it I just made a mental note and promptly forgor. It might have started with a T?
Anons translated the game and made threads about it here on /vrpg/ just like the guys who did HW. Was this year though, of this I'm sure
only played a bit but this is interesting
good atmosphere, really tickles my "cute girls trapped in pretentious melancholy chuuni bullshit land" fetish
combat's kinda cool in that you control nothing, you have to assign conditional AI prompt type stuff for everyone and then set them loose with your only interaction being popping everyone's limit break modes. like dragon age origins' companion system. if high hp enemy, use attack buff. if ally < 50% hp, use heal. that kind of stuff.
also the fact that you could go up to the i'm-totally-not-hiding-anything-and-i'm-totally-not-the-true-end girl and ask for her to just spoil everything was also both omninous and cool
really wanted to see what would happen but also did not want to see
What the name of that rpg maker game that was like 30 hours of misery wank? I think it had something to do with aliens, and some guys mom cucking him. it wasnt a porn jrpg but it seemed to be made in rpgmaker and translated into english
I'm playing a Zombie JRPG called Raging Bytes right now. Is reasonably fun, and is some Japanese nerds very directly creating an homage to George Romero's movies.
Not strictly necessary as it adds more work, think of the poses, or god forbid CGs, but eroge are unironically good for this.
You can dress up the heroines in different outfits, sometimes the cgs are only for a particular outfit (which is still good for roleplaying variety, like say, bunny suit bawd outfit if you prostitute yourself at the bar), sometimes they go through the effort of adding every variant for the scene.
This game really goes some amazing places. The first time I tried playing it, I hated it, but I fell in love with it after I got better at Japanese lmao
Chako is such a fun MC.
unlike eru(fu) mani(a) i'm enjoying this one right from the start, the plot is solid and the characters are likeable (freddy's a c**t but he seems like he'll get better)
the merc system is interesting but the return of fire emblem permadeath means i'm gonna be savescumming the hell out of every level. loving the unlockable/secret characters however
dev definitely has a favorite type of MC though, the useless girl who sleeps too much and fails at everything but also has secret massive powerup side.
>make sexy character
>cant frick it

Good, gameplay-focused, non-H, JP RPG Maker games, available to EOPs:

Its not rpgmaker, they've got their own engine.
kemco games are not that good so dont waste your money
Fashion Customization in rpgm games good or unnecessary?
i like it but it also makes you think they could have spent that time working on other assets/features
It's not that hard, really.
I think I won't do it for my first game, bc I suck at pixel art and can't find anyone better than me, unfortunately.
Cg?

cringe
>punches through a brick wall with her bare e-girl fists
>muggers so scared shitless they get stat debuffs
oh yeah this is gonna be a good one
