In terms of pure action mechanics you are correct, they did indeed refine the formula on later games.
The level design in Demon's souls is flawed but at least its an attempt at crafting a believable set of fantasy worlds with a genuine attempt at worldbuilding (instead of poopy dungus finger incest meme world). I enjoy the way the levels never stay the same from stage to stage aside from the swamp (quite bad I'll give you that)
The bosses are not designed to give a smooth ramp in challenge, some are quite easy, some a quite hard, it feels natural. Dragon God is shit tho I'll give you that.

On my first and only playthrough (because i got bored) i hit level 120 without effort. had my 40 in health, endurance, strength, so i started dumping points in a stat i wasnt using because the game was already to easy. I threw them into Arcane, not knowing it was their version of Hollow from ds3. much later rediscovering bleed, (which let me vaporize enemies in ds3), let me mindlessly blender my way through every boss without thinking.
I have more than 200h on The Isle, and I think its dogshit for the most part, but it scratch an itch that no other game manage to satisfy properly. Gameplay is more or less fine, but god do the dev are hacks who take literal months to a year to release new content, and are obviously content milking furries donations and streamer being given preferrential treatment to bait peoples in, and the community is pure rng, some peoples are total bros, others are utter buttholes who just kill for fun.

as someone who was there from the start with demon's souls i can say elden ring is based and one of the best souls games. demons souls and dark souls 1 are still just the best though. bloodborne can stay. ds2 and 3 are for gays.
Every Souls fan I know has said ER was so good it's made it difficult to go back and play the previous titles. They still can and enjoy their time, but there's so much they miss. Their biggest complaint is always build diversity. Each game just has so many clear wins and losses, while ER has so much that's valid especially due to ashes of war and unique weapon arts.

Yeah it does. Elden ring is nonsensical from start to finish. The charm of the foggy bloom graphics and the dreary dreamlike music wears off and there's nothing going on under the hood. The story just doesn't make sense, they realized they can just string a bunch of themes and words together and a youtuber will just write out their backstory for them. The NPCs feel like cardboard cutouts feeding you bland tasteless bits of nothing. There are very few puzzles, very few interesting battle situations emergent from the level design. Trying to seriously engage the game feels like floating down a lazy river in an inner tube for 100+ hours

Eh, I got the platinum and I thought it was good to okay. When it was fun, it was really fun, but I hated how much they reused everything. The fact there were only what, 8 unique bosses was kind of a let down to me, and shows how the game was padded to make it a big, open-world title.
In the end I enjoyed it enough that I don't regret buying it, but I'm probably never going to bother replaying it, and I don't think I'll pick up the DLC either.

I couldn't find the replay value in Elden Ring, honestly. Making a new character then stepping out into Limgrave makes me realize that I probably won't even see a good, proper weapon for a while, even if I tried to speed run the game to get that weapon. Some weapons are also locked behind inaccessible parts of the game, so you're stuck with the same shit weapons for a majority of the game.
I've done maybe a dozen playthrus and none of them have used the same weapon. So many weapons with awesome movesets. I dabbing on people with noble slender sword and miquellan knight sword now.

For me it was always an action rpg with a simple yet cool combat which felt punchy and satisfying: the clangs of metal felt good, the large weapons felt like massive hunks of stone and steel, you crash into the ground like a fridge if you are overencumbered, every step with a suit of armor on is a hefty stomp accompanied by the sound of plates. Yet there were no forced combos, no shitty turn based combos, no locked animations, no awkward sliding around like in most action games(I didn't play Monster Hunter until World came out, I did play older games later though). And the sheer weapon and equip variety on display with no restrictions, combo whatever you want.
People jerk off to "muh tough bosses let me solo her XD malenia OnS plin plin plon", but forget about the levels and how the game is also structured around them, with some need to either proceeding somewhat carefully or moving hastefully if you remember the layout already.
ER made a lot of good steps towards variety and the amount of stuff you can play around, so balance issues were inevitable. Spirit summons are just bafflling, these are just regular summons but they don't increase the health of the boss. Why.
I got into it with old Ganker by importing demon's souls in the first wave.
It was grimdark zelda for everyone. There was no red man culture and people played it like a roguelike where preparedness trumps ignorance it wasn't a difficulty thing it was a bring the right tool to the fight thing.

Parries are essentially just attacks. They deal posture damage, which when enough of that is dealt you get a free kill. You're not waiting around to attack, you ARE attacking.

The level design in Demon's souls is flawed but at least its an attempt at crafting a believable set of fantasy worlds with a genuine attempt at worldbuilding (instead of poopy dungus finger incest meme world). I enjoy the way the levels never stay the same from stage to stage aside from the swamp (quite bad I'll give you that)
The bosses are not designed to give a smooth ramp in challenge, some are quite easy, some a quite hard, it feels natural. Dragon God is shit tho I'll give you that.

On my first and only playthrough (because i got bored) i hit level 120 without effort. had my 40 in health, endurance, strength, so i started dumping points in a stat i wasnt using because the game was already to easy. I threw them into Arcane, not knowing it was their version of Hollow from ds3. much later rediscovering bleed, (which let me vaporize enemies in ds3), let me mindlessly blender my way through every boss without thinking.

I have more than 200h on The Isle, and I think its dogshit for the most part, but it scratch an itch that no other game manage to satisfy properly. as someone who was there from the start with demon's souls i can say elden ring is based and one of the best souls games. demons souls and dark souls 1 are still just the best though. bloodborne can stay. ds2 and 3 are for gays.
Every Souls fan I know has said ER was so good it's made it difficult to go back and play the previous titles. They still can and enjoy their time, but there's so much they miss. Their biggest complaint is always build diversity. Each game just has so many clear wins and losses, while ER has so much that's valid especially due to ashes of war and unique weapon arts.

Yeah it does. Elden ring is nonsensical from start to finish. The charm of the foggy bloom graphics and the dreary dreamlike music wears off and there's nothing going on under the hood. The story just doesn't make sense, they realized they can just string a bunch of themes and words together and a youtuber will just write out their backstory for them. The NPCs feel like cardboard cutouts feeding you bland tasteless bits of nothing. There are very few puzzles, very few interesting battle situations emergent from the level design. Trying to seriously engage the game feels like floating down a lazy river in an inner tube for 100+ hours

Eh, I got the platinum and I thought it was good to okay. When it was fun, it was really fun, but I hated how much they reused everything. The fact there were only what, 8 unique bosses was kind of a let down to me, and shows how the game was padded to make it a big, open-world title.
In the end I enjoyed it enough that I don't regret buying it, but I'm probably never going to bother replaying it, and I don't think I'll pick up the DLC either.
Anything from DS2 and onward is mid and trash. I can't believe Fromsoft sustain this long creating the worst mishmash of uninteresting worlds, gameplay, level design, and generic artstyle. I like the open world adding scale to the world. Hearing about how glorious Leyndell is and then seeing it really clicks. Overlocking the city and realizing all that scale is really being put to use was worth it.

I couldn't find the replay value in Elden Ring, honestly. Making a new character then stepping out into Limgrave makes me realize that I probably won't even see a good, proper weapon for a while, even if I tried to speed run the game to get that weapon. Some weapons are also locked behind inaccessible parts of the game, so you're stuck with the same shit weapons for a majority of the game.

For me it was always an action rpg with a simple yet cool combat which felt punchy and satisfying: the clangs of metal felt good, the large weapons felt like massive hunks of stone and steel, you crash into the ground like a fridge if you are overencumbered, every step with a suit of armor on is a hefty stomp accompanied by the sound of plates. Yet there were no forced combos, no shitty turn based combos, no locked animations, no awkward sliding around like in most action games(I didn't play Monster Hunter until World came out, I did play older games later though). And the sheer weapon and equip variety on display with no restrictions, combo whatever you want.
People jerk off to "muh tough bosses let me solo her XD malenia OnS plin plin plon", but forget about the levels and how the game is also structured around them, with some need to either proceeding somewhat carefully or moving hastefully if you remember the layout already.
ER made a lot of good steps towards variety and the amount of stuff you can play around, so balance issues were inevitable. Spirit summons are just bafflling, these are just regular summons but they don't increase the health of the boss. Why.

Parries are essentially just attacks. They deal posture damage, which when enough of that is dealt you get a free kill. You're not waiting around to attack, you ARE attacking.
