Northgard

https://store.steampowered.com/app/466560/Northgard/
Northgard is having a free week-end. Posting here so people who actually give a shit about RTS/resource management games can be notified. The same guys who made this are making the new Dune game and Wartales.
If you ever wanted to try it out now is the time. It's also on sale.
It's a pretty decent game, especially if you have a non-casual coop buddy. And it's regularly updated, with an expansion on the way too.
The DLCs are cheap and optional, they all add one new clan with usually pretty unique abilities, buy on sale if you want to play that particular clan (I personally own them all except the clan of the rat which I'm probably going to buy during this sale for 2 eurodollaridoos).

I'd stay away from multiplayer versus/FFA if you're new, the campaign is decent at teaching the basics and the other solo/coop modes are pretty good.
Have fun anons.

AoE is much faster. AoE is also a traditional RTS, with freeform building placement and a large number of units.

Northguard borrows mechanics from 4X games related to territories, "anomalies", building limits and constraints, a slightly more complex economy, a weather system, and a global events system.
Northguard's RTS mechanics are extremely minimalistic - pop caps are low and military units are often in single digit quantities. It's a lot less overwhelming than AoE, but also less skill-intensive.

      >'d stay away from multiplayer versus/FFA if you're new
Multiplayer is the only reason to play this game, single player is an actual snooze simulator.
FFA and 1v1 are meme mods though only 3v3 is worthwhile.

This is basically CIV with matches ending in 30~ minutes instead of 30 hours.
It's for people that like slow based resource management and decision making over fast based micro oriented RTS without being stuck to games that have weeks/month long sessions.

        >3v3
Yeah bro I'm sure a new player is going to have amazing fun getting rushed by 3 people while they're trying their best to survive winter

How's that live service drip feed working out for you? Not only are mindless consumers moronic for obvious reasons they are also a menace to society and threaten the very fabric of society by empowering shitty companies and validating their shitty business practices.

New players would be placed in wood league where everyone is equally or similarly moronic and no one knows how to rush up until much much higher ranks because it's actually not that easy and requires coordination by everyone.

Obviously they shouldn't jump into MP straight away but if they wish to play long term it's the best option around with a surprisingly active scene. unless they end up liking conquest which I personally find boring (and sometimes buggy)

This game is garbage. It's all style no substance. The tile system with pops is really fricking dumb. Just slows down the game forever. They had some nice thoughts on some of the mechanics but overall a mediocre experience bthe first playthrough at best and replayability is nonexistent. Especially when compared to other games like civ, StarCraft, or AoE.

resource gathers slower as time goes, because eventually pops and building eat up your food(military even moreso), wood, and gold exponentially, while youre pretty limited to expand because you usually only find like 2 food tiles, which barely feeds your food needs come winter(you need to assign lot of your "non essentials" to basic vills) even in early stage where your pop wont reach 18,let alone to buy another tile. pop spawning only tied to happiness is also another stupid thing, you can only have so much vills to sate all your needs, why food abundance doesnt affect toward faster pop spawning as well? and not to mention there are no option to sell excess resource in order to buy limited resource in the later stages of the game(mostly wood when midate game hits), farms should be able to be built anywhere, but in non fertile ground, the income are so minimal(like, 1.5 the basic villager food income), and will provide a huge boost in fertile lands, whilst still having the winter production malus

this game has been around for quite a while and ive learned about it when Dune came out
i pirated it and tried several different factions and i enjoyed the wolf and horse.
i think the multiplayer has some really nice potential to be fun and competitive, but i have looked around for guides and since the game isnt that popular the discussions are all over the place and it's not clear which ones are most up to date.

afaik the multiplayer is split into 2 categories

          versus (1v1, 2v2, 3v3 etc.)
          >entirely based around abusing certain op clans
          >first 10 minutes is solitaire macro stuff where you just giga boom your economy, because there is virtually no early game combat or interaction
          >people just set up timing pushes that end the game at some point within 10-20 minutes and leave most of the mechanics unutilized

          FFA
          >somewhat better, but suffers from usual kingmaking FFA bullshit
          >a lot of clans are ass in FFA
          >some other clans are really good and are usually "banned"
          >lore victory is way too easy and the person who booms the most probably gets it without any extra effort on their part

imo FFA is probably the only way to play the game, but you still need to houserule it like smash and disable lore victory or it will just be lame and anticlimactic.

Interesting take on the genre, I like how it streamlines many mechanics, and take others to their logical conclusion.
For example villagers in AoE2, which you must never stop producing. Here it happens on its own

The campaign is pretty anime for a Nord themed game, so it can strike a bit as a bait and switch type of thing that some might find a bit off-putting. Which also explain why trannies and woke type nu-males enjoy it a lot.

I made a thread about this probably about a year ago or something when I noticed the same thing. I'd get an achievement for doing something so simple like killing the first boss in a game with 25 bosses or whatever, and I'd see that only ~50% of players got it.

I'll admit, I still have a few games in my Steam library that I haven't touched yet, but I do plan on getting to them eventually. The numbers are nuts, though. It looks like the average person has played barely half of their games.

But I can sympathize, I understand why this happens. I'll see a game that I think looks interesting and check it out but not buy it. Then I'll see it's on sale for like $12 and then I'm just like, why the frick not? I make enough money that $12 is completely trivial to me, so I just get it. Even if I only play it for a few hours and never again, $12 is nothing.

The only Ganker browsing Northgard dev I remember is that anon who said he was fired or sent on an idefinite leave for learning that the majority of butthole mp players was from China and suggesting that they are given their own server.

      Anonymous

I remember that guy. He refused to even prove he was a dev and when pointed out how the chinks barely even touched this game he just started seething. He also pointed out that they weren't cheating but just didn't play "fair" or something of the sort. That was moronic.

        Anonymous

Yes but oddly enough after that thread the chink menace in Ng actually stopped. Idk if he was a dev but everything he said was true. Mp was ruined by chinks for a good 6 months. Then the problem was magically solved. Timing was right after I saw that thread. Godspeed to the chink busting dev anon, godspeed.

          Anonymous

He wasn't a dev at that point. He said he got fired for suggesting a region lock.

            Anonymous

Also looking through the steam forums, i'm not seeing any complaints about them greifing or cheating. And the chinese had their own servers since at least 2020, if not 2019. So I'm going to assume the guy was just larping.

              Anonymous

first of all, people playing outside of their containment regions is the entire issue, I'm not sure how you don't understand that. When everyone in Dota was crying about Russians do you think that Russians didn't have their own servers? Of course they did. The problem was Russians playing on American servers. I mean.... that's the whole fricking point, not sure how that went over your head.

Of course the chinks had their own servers. The problem was that the chinks were playing on the EU or NA servers and shitting them up and Shiro wasn't doing anything about it. I just made a policy of a blanket ban on any fricking chink with chink letters in their name.

Second, no one uses Steam forums. Again, I'm not sure how you don't understand that. There's like one post per day on the Northgard Steam forum, and like 1 post per week on the Northgard Reddit. On the Discord? There are like 10 000 posts per day. The entire community and the devs are on Discord and everything is discussed and decided on Discord. This seems to be the case with a lot of games these days, Steam forums aren't really anything to be gauging anything by. Not sure why you don't know that. You seem to be pretty fricking clueless.

                Anonymous

You would still see complaints, regardless of general activity. It being a different place to talk about the game wouldn't magically change the topics that people talk about. I don't know why this is pissing you off so much.
                >Steam forums aren't really anything to be gauging anything by. Not sure why you don't know that. You seem to be pretty fricking clueless.
Right, becuase people there wouldn't complain about a supposedly massive issue for no reason other than said discussion not being on a specific community platform. If you think i'm clueless you might be moronic for arguing against this general point.

I've just tried the first 2 campaign maps:
The game looks well constructed, decent art (altough some people might find it too "mobile cartoony"), original concepts for clans, steamrolled but more or less comfy gathering and winter survival but I find a great con.
The pace of the game: as other anon have commented the more you advance in the a game the more slow it becomes the gathering and the progress. And I didn't even find a turbo button. A such simple detail makes the mid-latte game terribly boring making you just look at the screen and wait and wait for the time to pass.
If anything I think I will catch it in a bundle pack for a really cheap price.
