You can just look, the Steam release page does go past the first five AAA titles released that month. If it's rated "mostly positive" or higher, it's probably worth at least checking out, and you'll most likely know if it's not for you just by looking at it. There's a lot of good shit out there that just doesn't have an advertising budget to work with.
I find the opposite to be the case with Steam. It seems like the recommendations and suggestions are all intentionally algorithmized towards shit that sells. I can spend a couple hours looking for interesting games on there, find only one or two, and then a day later some anon recommends shit here that I never found myself on Steam even though it's the exact same genre I was looking at.
Nextfest is a good time to keep an eye out and try some games. Other than that word of mouth, people who like less marketed games can tell you about them.
